Great pics Rip, very excited about Allen Christensen being fit and training hard. He is an absolute elite talent and had little to no pre season last year and he was one of our best. He is my early favourite for the B and F in 2016.
Thanks Nino. I'm currently going without food so I'll have enough do re mi to plonk on Bundy for the Brownlow. Good thing.

Doesn't matter how well you can kick a footy if you're throwing up on the sidelines and cramping up :p

But yeah skillz are up there - high fitness is a solid base to build on
I'd rather my recruits to be skillful and natural footballer before having elite fitness.

Fitness can be built up.... Skills of a player is much harder to improve.

Rhys Mathieson is a pure footballer.... And skilled.... Super excited about him

Amen to that. Plenty of "good athletes" on the footy scrap heap. Project players, I think they're called.

Im not sure we are that far behind in the fitness stakes, we got killed from turnovers last year.

I'd guess we spent a lot of time chasing the opposition.

Improve the skills and we'd keep possession for longer and chase less.

I think it is a very good sign for us that the players have been doing so much running. There will be a slight natural evolution that way anyway because of the reduction in interchanges but it also probably reflects the age of our list and our need to be competitive for longer.

I would expect that players have been told to hit their strength and fitness targets when they return or face a lot of extra work in January.

yep. damian austin said that the first thing they will be doing when they get back from their break will be a 3km time trial. look out boys if you don't come back in as good a shape as when you left.

On the other hand, there are also a lot of good footballers who are athletically deficient on that scrap heap too.

The previous time trial was at Enoggera Army Barracks and wasn't open to the public, so you'd probably want to double check it closer to time before you trot off to Coorparoo....

I got to see it.

Ran into Ryan Lester tonight in a small town in the dandenongs called Tecoma. He was back visiting his folks!
What an awesome bloke! I was probably the only person up here who would recognize him and he was more than happy to stop for a chat! Was a little surprised that I knew who he was!
Back up there on the 30th and by the sounds of things he has been really enjoying pre season! Not much else to say goss wise really but just that he was a really nice, honest fella. It's good to meet players that aren't too into themselves!!

Question for anyone that's been to training:

Has Michael Close been doing any training in defence? I think he'd be a pretty good CHB, but a mediocre KPF at best.

Big tank, good size but no great "footy smarts". If he was following someone to the ball, rather than trying to find it himself, he could have a pretty good career.

Of course, this is just based on me watching footy and I actually have no idea, but I'd just be interested in seeing the switch to defence.

I think people forget he's played 15 games of AFL, very few young forwards come out and dominate. I think he will make a pretty decent CHF. He's a good size and has a massive tank and I think most importantly is prepared to back himself.

Give him a couple of years to show what's he is made off before saying he will be a mediocre KPF

I haven't seen any evidence of him backing himself yet, but can't fault the work ethic (part of the reason I'd like to see him AFL defence, rather than NEAFL forward).

I'm concerned he's probably fallen to number 4 or 5 in the KPF pecking order (not sure where Hipwood sits ATM), but would fit in nicely to the back 6.

But like I said, I'm just guessing.

the training i've been to, haven't seen him with a defensive group. but like the idea of trying him in defence, i have suggested that in a few threads a while ago.
great minds think alike EskiBro.

You have nothing to go off that he's gonna make it as a defender.
Fwiw I studied with a guy that played forward on him and booted 8 goals against him just before his drafting
