call me greedy but would love to add Mayes to that list!

We could have a social media blitz with those 4, really push the memberships up a tad.

If there are players that don't want to sign on now then they will have their own reasons but there is little more the club could have done - apart from win more games and that is largely in their hands. Things feel strangely exciting.

Too right. If the players want wins then they need to work harder. Be a team and reap the rewards from there.

Did we have a few players re sign before the start of last season and they did some kind of special announcement before round 1. I cannot remember. Would be awesome for the club to announce 4 of those before round 1. (Even though i want pen to paper NOW).

Maybe I'm adding 2+2 to make 5, but I reckon at least one or two will be announced at the same time as Leppitsch's contract extension is ratified by the board. Maybe Swann was just being coy, but he was pressed on SEN the other week about why he wouldn't just formally announce Leppa now when it seemed like a formality. Swann replied that clubs want to keep control of the announcement cycle because they might want to announce a few things at once.

Thought the article was interesting. Great news.

Like that it seemed fairly frank too.

My experience of Josh has always been positive. I've spoken to him a few times at functions and signings and I think he is a really solid contributor. He just needs to crack three goals more often.

I'll just leave this little nugget here.
DANIEL Rich is on the verge of signing a multi-million dollar deal that will see him play out his career as a Lion.

Brisbane has been presented with a contract proposal by Rich’s management that will be discussed by the club’s football sub-committee next week when list manager Peter Schwab is in town.

Rich is not a prolific ball-winner but is the Lions’ best ball-user.

AFL statisticians Champion Data rank him alongside fellow vice-captain Dayne Zorko as Brisbane’s only elite players.

GWS made a major play for Rich when they first entered the competition but were knocked back.

As a free-agent at the end of this year, Rich’s management group would be knocked over in the rush by clubs wanting to talk to him.

I'm so freaking overjoyed at how all these players that were flight risks last year are all now openly pledging their love for the club *before* pen has been put to paper.

Culture? We got it. Lambos brought it. We keeping it now.

I couldn't get past the paywall, but from the nugget quoted by DaveMonkey, I'll reserve my excitement.
Brisbane has been presented with a contract proposal
Without having been able to read the article, I imagine any initial proposal from Rich's management would be asking for a lot, a real lot. Is it affordable, and is it worth it? Is it realistic? Will they agree to terms? Sounds like a bit of water to pass under the bridge yet.
Is there something more substantial in the article, than he has put a price on his head?

Whist I agree with everything you said.

Let's just go back over the past few years and it was all "Contracts on hold" that turned into "I wanna go home/trade me".

I'm fine with a contract proposal at this point, it gives us something to work with.

A fair amount of quotes from Richy stating that he now considers Brisbane home and that he not only loves the club but loves Brisbane and he stated that his wife and all her family are from Brisbane. Sounds like he has not intention whatsoever of leaving the club.

I somewhat agree, I mean his management would be obviously using the FA shenanigans as leverage for more $ and they would know signing Rich long term would be probably our most key re-signing of the past few years. Rich is well loved by the club and the players, if he leaves I think some of the other players coming out of contract in the next year or two will start to second guess their loyalties. Losing Redden and Rich in consecutive years will be fairly damaging I would have thought and if I was someone like Mayes I probably would be having my doubts over the club going forward. "Why are all these core senior players leaving?"... just doesn't give a good feel around the club I guess. (note: just my opinion based on nothing but a gut feel)

Back to the main point though... is it worth it to sign him up on multi million dollar deal? With everything put into perspective not only on field but off I would be inclined to say yes as long as it is realistic and allows us some flexibility going forward. But in saying that he better improve on field or it might even backfire on the club if Rich is on a lucrative deal that has forced some players to take slight pay cuts...

Don't get me wrong, it sounds positive. My reaction isn't just to the posts here, but there is a bit of chatter on twitter etc, bordering on dancing in the streets, as if it's a done deal.
It is certainly good news that talks are underway and an offer has been made to Brisbane, as opposed to nothing 'til end of season.
About this time last year, we were in talks with Pickering, eager to extend Aish's stay.
It's good news, but as I said, a bit to go yet and I'll save my excitement for when pen is put to paper.:)

I don't think Rich will be asking for too much over the odds.I think he's well aware he is not the complete player yet and there could be doubts other clubs who might be interested would pay 700k or more for his main strength, that big left boot.

Yeah don't get me wrong I can see where you are coming from. I just think most Lions fans are probably a little eager to jump the gun in regards to excitement at the prospect of re-signing Zorko, Rich and Green due to the fact that we have had the retention issues in recent years and it wasn't all that long ago that the prospect of losing Zorko, Rich and Green seemed like a very real possibility.

"Fix ya culcha"

Challenge accepted, restrain your trades fellas
pffft, Leppa and Rocky are probably calling these players in for a meeting and 'giving them an offer they can't refuse'. Clearly restraint of trade!

It depends what 'multi-million dollar deal' means. 4 years at 500k= multi-million dollar deal.

Yesssssss. Hope Redden has a good year wherever the heck he ended up cause he is missing out on being part of a committed team of people who have done the hard yards and who obviously believe that they building something that may be special. May not be either, but I'm happy right now.

I think the $ value includes consideration for the faith that is being shown. How many members do you think that will bring back to the club?

I'm sure that the club takes the view that Rich re-signing, particularly early, has implications well beyond performance and money.

As I see it, Richy signing a long term contract in a FA year would greatly reinforce the positive messages coming out of the club at the moment to the point where, if Green and Zorko re-sign around the same time, the retention crisis generated by the GH5 and promoted by the media/BF ever since will have almost disappeared.

Rich seemed to be restricted by a hip problem for most of last year but by the just game against the Bulldogs his sublime left foot had returned. He looks really fit at the moment, he wants to stay and we want to keep him.

If all of this adds up to a new 4 year contract at $600k, with all of the other dividends it brings, I'll be perfectly happy with it.

Longevity of contract used to be in a player's favour but these days it is more important for clubs. Free agency and the decline of "one club players" has changed things. If a premium needs to be paid to lock a player away long term then so be it. You effectively pay to remove any sort of flight risk. Until we become a destination club, I'm ok with paying that bit more for the guys we truly don't want to lose.

The other thing about Richy is that he's still the most recognisable Brisbane Lion, at least up here. His departure would hurt the club more than just what the loss of on field contribution would.
