How screwed is the rest of the competition when a team that finished top 4 has this much high end talent to trade away and clubs outbid each other and will offer up just about anything for their talent. It doesn't even matter to them that top draft picks walk they get what they want and just keep banking them. I don't blame the Giants for playing it like this but they are going to be a super scary outfit for a long time.

Can we discuss our recruitment strategy the past 8 years.

From the 2009 draft right through to the 2012 draft, the club didn't use trades to build the list. Strictly 18 yo's only.

In 2013 the club decided that going to the draft wasn't working and we started using list spots on free agents aswell as 2014 and 15. We aggressively targeted mature players Dal Santo, Waite and Higgins along with top up players like Nahas and Ray and Tippet to fill a void.

Now in 2016 we are effectively going back to the draft once more. Basically what didn't work from 2009-12? Am I wrong?

You can say there is no shame in coming up short with the strategy the club took and that we did our best. I'm not against trying our luck once more but should the same people be gifted with the responsibility of resetting the list when they didn't succeed last time? Our track record isn't anywhere near good enough considering 0 top four finishes.

I think what has hurt was trying to use the draft to acquire top end talent during the years it was comprised! We just hid and hoped we didn't lose blokes, who haven't turned out as good as we thought they'd be.

Tell the whole story. We ended up losing pick 15 and bastinac for anderson, pick 17, and an we upgraded 3 picks which helped us land clarke, hibberd and wagner. We wouldn't have got clarke without that trade.

So effectively we lost 2 spots in the draft.

Either you smash it up we still gave our 1st pick away for him. With the trading of picks we ended up at 21 which netted us McKay. I just hope Mckay turns out ok otherwise our last few drafts have turned out to be disastrous.

Funny enough there was rumours going around here last year that we were interested in both these boys. Tomlinson has a tank and half for a big boy, very versatile...want. Hartlett at 700K for the next 4 years...hmmmm...risky.

He was at Nth Ballarat for one year. Every team had access to him. There was no academy thing going on.

By all accounts its because they want some early picks and are unhappy with his effort this year. Unless its gold coast who are desperate for players i think his salary could very much be negotiated with them.

Hartlett could be a star of the AFL. Would take him in a heartbeat

Never said there was an academy thing going on. Seeing he was playing for our reserve side it just would have been nice if we had him, just the sort of player we are missing.
