why do you continually reference GWS, they are a special beast that will never be replicated, even if we traded our entire list we would not get the picks they were granted on start-up.

every time I hear GWS did this I hear BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH. :)

Im not suggesting we would get the same picks as a start up franchise however I see no reason not to look at how they went about their list build and try to take some elements from what looks like being an amazing success and incorporating them into our own strategies.

Without giving up quality or next years picks, how do we aquire such picks?

We could use pick 11 to trade backwards in the order for multiple picks.

We should not be trading next years picks as our finishing position is too uncertain.

Only other way is players and as we have quite a few in the late 20s age bracket we should look to move some of them on.

Isn't it meant to be quite an even draft? I'd rather 11 and 12 than five tbh, unless we feel there are only 5-6 elite kids in the draft.

To be honest I'm not sure, I don't really know much about this yrs draft. I just thinking if there was a real club changing player it would come from pick 5. 10 onwards could go one way or the other I guess.

ABC Grandstand AFL suggesting we need to trade Goldstein to GC...... apparently we're in denial in regards to what we're doing. Goldstein would bring us 2 really great pics. Need to aggressively attack the draft.

To quote Mark Maclure "Who would wan't to go to North!"

crikey I am over the media thinking they run our list management, I think it is time they head over to the aging saints and discuss why Fisher hasn't been delisted.

Anyway to answer dumbarse's question, any young kid wanting to establish themselves as league footballers, pretty sure selection policy will change in 2017.

well fingers crossed.

now a question for dumbarse, does he wish he looked up just a second before he ran into a stationary Mick Nolan?

4 games - tore his pec muscle.
3 games - emergence of tarrant. Had thompson and spud
0 games - no preseason, missed first part of the year. Still had thompson and spud.

2017- no spud. Thompson on the decline. Best outcomes is tarrant to number 1 forward. Tippett to resting ruck / number 2 forward. Thompson 3rd tall / zoning off to help out / small forward.
I must admit I admire your defence of Tippett. It's nice for someone to show him some love.

If he was to:

1. Remain on our list
2. Bard to play him
3. To hold his spot
4. Become the next Tarrant

the resurrection would be Jesus like and truly admirable.

Just harking back to the Walker game as an example though I still see he has too many shortcomings. I was sitting up high in the Riverbank stand that game and saw events unfolding and not as a result of our midfields lack of pressure. Tippett was just plain dumb.

Gave Walker 2 or 3 steps every time with no closing speed on the lead.

Also beaten in the air showing poor judgement allowing Walker to mark uncontested. Outstrengthened one on one in contested situations.

My head was in my hands in disbelief and expletives flying as the crowd went ballistic for Walker over and over again.

He's turning 28 soon and has injury history issues now which seem to be letting his body down. We might get, what, 3 years out of him as KPD being banged up.

Bard is shit scared to play him and for good reason. But good luck to him there's nothing like a feel good story.

Blah Blah Blah, please explain how GWS would be a success without all those picks? and if we don't have all those picks what strategy we should take away? are you thinking we recruit old trucks to teach our kids? you mean like replace the guys we just delisted with guys we will have to delist next year? no look GWS are what they are because the league made them that way. so back to Blah Blah Blah.

I doubt it but , If Wells compo pick is 12 I'd hope we'd smash this trade period hard Goldy , Swallow & pick 29 in exchange for picks 4 , 21 & 22 . We could go into the draft with picks 4 , 11 , 12 , 21 & 22

I like this idea, but would trade month be as much fun without all the crazy people with their crazy ideas?

see what I did there? ;)

we ain't Melbourne. :(

It is actually in our best interest to outwardly appear like we have no idea at the moment.

remain silent, when we make noise send mixed messages, allow the media to speculate, get compo, straighten out, smash draft.

giantroo does age still come into it anymore in terms of compensation. If not, a first rounder is ideal.
The age brackets I have seen mentioned is you are either in the under 25 bracket or over 25 bracket. So it shouldn't be a factor. The main factor is the contract and as we know the figure is 500-600k x 3 yrs, that's either 1st/2nd round allocation.

GC were given similar (albeit less) start up concessions and comparing the 2 as they currently sit is chalk and cheese.

SOS has since gone to the Blues and is incorporating elements of his GWS strategy as we speak and I like the way he is going about it.

To win flags you need to be bold. Id much rather go this route than go with the Richmond model of keeping their B22 players and trying to bolster with discards and 3 picks each year.

As for the "old truck teacher" strategy im not sure guys like Boomer, Dal, Petrie + Spud would be happy playing @ Werribee for 10+ games a year in a development type roll and as club greats im not sure that would be the way the fans would want to see them go out either.

Found the rules, age is still a factor.

COMPENSATION FOR FREE AGENTS

A club that has a net loss of players transferring to/from other clubs as free agents in one transfer period is entitled to compensation via National Draft picks allocated by the AFL.

The compensation formula produces a points rating for players based on:

1. The new contract of the free agent;
2. The age of the free agent.

Draft picks are allocated to clubs based on the net total points for free agents lost and gained during the transfer period.

Draft picks will be allocated to one of five places:

• 1st round
• end of 1st round
• 2nd round
• end of 2nd round
• 3rd round

In applying the formula, an expert committee reviews the formula outcomes. The committee has the power to recommend alternative outcomes to GM – Football Operations where the formula produces a materially anomalous result.

As we know, if you are over 25, you are either in the 5% top paid bracket (1st round pick), 10% (end of 1st), 15% (2nd), 20% (end of 2nd) and so forth.
