NRL hoping juniors and volunteers can fill ANZ Stadium for grand final

James Buckley
    • The NRL is offloading thousands of free tickets to its non-Sydney grand final in a bid to fill the 83,000-capacity ANZ Stadium for Sunday's season-ending showdown.

With out-of-towners Melbourne and North Queensland contesting the decider, ticket sales have been much softer than usual, with the league turning to Sydney juniors as the answer to fleshing out the grand final crowd. An NRL spokesperson strongly denied up to 20,000 tickets were being handed out, as some industry insiders suggested on Wednesday, claiming the figure was only a few thousand. In any event, the match is not expected to sell out.

The league is using its PlayNRL Rewards system to facilitate the junior ticket handout. An email went out to select junior clubs earlier this week, encouraging players and volunteers to redeem their free grand final ticket from 9am Wednesday morning. A different password was sent out in each email, with the password needed to redeem the free tickets.
North Korea World Cup all over again.

and they are right to do so. The reality is that they have SOO and little else that needs a truly big stadium.

They don't seem to realise that SOO is partly killing their league. many see the NRL as simply a feeder league for Origin and watch that and nothing else
The government can do what they want with stadiums!

The nrl crowds are a joke and on average out of the top 4 football codes the worst in Sydney! They have had their way for decades & had their club grounds paid for by the tax payer something no other code has had! You see afl clubs investing top class facilities to improve their standards yet NRL only seem to invest in mini sized Casio leagues clubs & jump up and down expecting government, councils & nrl commission to pay for everything thing else

Velly interesting

NRL fudge ANZ finals crowd figures

THE NRL has been rocked by a finals crowd-fudging scandal amid growing calls to bring the rugby league Grand Final to Queensland.

Leaked crowd figures obtained by The Courier-Mail reveal a 15 per cent inflation on the NRL’s reported crowd attendance for Sydney games compared to actual crowd figures during this year’s finals series.

A recorded 107,835 people walked through the gates of ANZ and Allianz Stadium in the past three weeks - almost 15,000 fewer than the 123,030 reported by the NRL.

Crowd numbers for several games were inflated by as much as 5474 people in some instances (Cowboys vs Eels on September 16).

An NRL spokesperson yesterday did not wish to comment on the crowd numbers but said they were “confident the figures we post for each finals game is accurate”.

The revelations about number fudging come on the back of figures showing ANZ Stadium averaged only 14,410 people per game, its worst year yet.

The scandal will come as a major embarrassment to the NRL, which was yesterday forced to deny allegations it is giving away free tickets for Sunday’s Grand Final between the Storm and Cowboys.

The Courier-Mail understands the NRL is relying on thousands of giveaways to ensure an 80,000 sell-out at ANZ Stadium.

Courier mail would have a vested interest to publish a story like that. It does have an agenda to bring the GF to QLD after all.

Why the NRL would contemplate putting on their GF in a 50k stadium beats me though. If it didnt involve QLD sides they would be heavily reliant upon interstaters to fill it anyway.

North Korea World Cup all over again.
Meanwhile, while the NRL desperately try, by various ways and means, to "sellout" their GF, thousands have been locked out of Punt Rd after its capacity was reached - just to watch a 30 minute training run.

Whether or not that is true it is still a newsworthy story.

I think we need independent crowd counters. Otherwise it undermines the_Wookie's hard work in collating the crowd figures, and makes a mockery of some of us sweating on the figures. :)

More seriously, I think crowd fudging (if it occurred) deserves strong criticism, but giving away free tickets is the right strategy if there are unsold tickets.

CH 7 were saying 7000 inside and the same outside Punt Road oval.Punt Road was never a big ground for crowds 20,000 was a good crowd over that the facilities were not up to it but that was the same at most of the VFL suburban grounds.
There's a good reason we moved across to the MCG. There's no room to expand there at all.

I presume that would include restricted and provisional members (there are only about 60,000 full members). Would be interesting to see the percentage of full members, still the line is chockers this morning

I think you will find there has always been a good percentage of Richmond supporters that are MCC members due to the fact that the Tigers have been playing their home games at the G since the 1960s

Just saw former NRL player Paul Gallen on ABC trying to justify the poor crowds at the NRL this year by saying its now really TV game and the crowds dont matter as much to the NRL.
I say BS to that as the AFL has apart fro SSO out rated the NRL all year.

Its not just ratings, its the money that it brings. Across the AFL we're talking an average of 9 million per club in memberships and reserved seating, and about a third again in gate takings, as well as the MCG payouts for exceeding the base audience target of per year at the MCG. This in turn affects signage and pourage rights values, as well as on site merchandise revenues.

Id estimate the value of attendance based revenues to clubs and the league to be worth almost as much as media rights revenues.

You are 100% correct the NRL miss out on maybe hundreds of millions in income because of their poor crowds which as you have stated has a flow on effect from other income streams.
Its quite dangerous to rely solely on one source of income like FTA TV that could easily diminish over the next few years.
A larger live viewing audience at actual matches also ensures the fan base is renewed with parents taking the kids along who will when adults still attend matches.

When attendances dropped a few years back and everyone knew Sunday and Monday nights were responsible the league had no hesitation in dropping them. Mclachlan said then that the league values its attendances highly.

Does demonstrate the difference between the business models for the codes, & origin skews direct comparisons bar Grand Final day.

Official attendance for today's #AFLGF is 100,021!

That's big....

With a Richmond premiership their membership and attendances next season will be epic, might see some records broken

And what a fabulous atmosphere that came through the TV Just saw Jack Riewoldt sing on stage with the Killers after match show and it looked like 30- 40,000 stayed around to see the players. Just magical scenes. Now we need Carlton to come good and play finals.
