Watching highlights with fresh eyes, geeze it's hard to look past Rayner.

He might lack a tank but unlike the other top ranked guys barring possibly Stephenson he has weapons. "Looks" like a top pick.

Watched his interview expecting a numbskull and was pleasantly surprised also.

Definitely leaning towards rayner - seems to have real star power and could be a genuinely great player if coached properly and maintains his professionalism.
His endurance can be seen as a weakness or a strength - if he can get some legs into him it's a serious point of improvement for senior football.

Assuming we get the #1 pick in the draft, what would we think of the following trade:

In: Brisbane's 2018 pick and Pick 14 (via Port)
Out: Pick #1

Brisbane get picks 1 and 2 in this year's draft, while we bet on Brisbane having a top 5 pick next year and drafting Rankine/Lukosius/Kingx2/Hill. It would be a hard sell to our supporters, but I'd absolutely love it.

Hell no for me

He's the man we want he has got superstar written all over him

Not exactly that trade but if we don't have a clear standout in mind (as a club, personally I'd take Rayner based on youtubing only) a creative leveraging of the number 1 pick could be very productive.

Throwing something out there, I wonder if Gold Coast under a new coach might like the PR and hype around a 'fresh start' and a number 1 pick? And if they'd be willing to pay up for it?

Wallace: Number one draft pick down to four

AFL drafting expert Terry Wallace has narrowed down the candidates for this year’s number one draft pick in the AFL National Draft to four players.

“I personally think there is four that I think could go number one: Paddy Dow, Adam Cerra, Luke Davies-Uniacke and Cam Rayner,” Wallace told SEN’s Hungry For Sport.

“I think between those four, they would be the most likely ones to go selection one.”

Wallace’s candidates share a common trait: all are expected to be exciting midfield prospects for their respective teams in the future.

Dow has been likened to a young Patrick Dangerfield from his time at the Bendigo Pioneers this year, a comparison shared with Eastern Ranges player Cerra.

Davies-Uniacke of the Dandenong Stingrays has been touted as a tall on-baller in a similar vein to Fremantle skipper Nathan Fyfe, while the Western Jets’ Rayner is the draft’s closest match to Richmond star Dustin Martin.

All four featured prominently in the National Under-18 championships earlier this year. Dow and Davies-Uniacke played for Vic Country while Cerra and Rayner lined up for Vic Metro.

One highly promising young talent that was overlooked by Wallace is South Australian forward Darcy Fogarty, who former Hawthorn recruiter Gary Buckenara branded as his choice for the number one pick earlier this week.

While Wallace can see the reasons for Fogarty to be first player selected this year, he says injuries and subsequent struggles for form have seen the 192 cm prospect fall down his rankings.

“Big strong lad and probably is the prototype of a first-round pick, but he’s had injuries and his form was well down because of injury through the (Under-18) champs,” he said.

“I think that might have him drop a couple of places.”

The 2017 AFL National Draft will take place in Sydney on November 24.

SEN draft analyst Brett Anderson breaks down the contenders...
Cameron RAYNER – Western Jets
DOB: 21/10/99 | Ht: 185.4cm | Wt: 88.5kg

The comparison that most make when it comes to Rayner is Richmond’s Dustin Martin due to his power and two-sided kicking, but he shares similar traits to Melbourne’s Christian Petracca and Port Adelaide’s Robbie Gray.

His running is still a work in progress and there is no guarantee it gets to the point when he can be a full-time midfielder at AFL level, which means his projection is more as a forward at the moment. Martin ran a level 14 beep test in 2009 — Rayner is level 11.

As a forward, he judges the ball superbly in flight and engages his opponents at the right time. He has a knack for being in the right place at the right time.

In the midfield, it is all about his power, but his ability to roll on to either foot with confidence makes him hard to contain.

Luke DAVIES-UNIACKE – Dandenong Stingrays
DOB: 8/6/99 | Ht: 187.3cm | Wt: 85.5kg

Davies-Uniacke has been an elite talent from his early years on the Mornington Peninsula but had a raft of injuries that left him questioning as a 16-year-old whether footy was for him. Thankfully for football, he stuck with it, although he does love a day of surfing.

Davies-Uniacke can win the ball on the inside and spread to the outside quickly. He can exit from the stoppage on either foot — has excellent balance and a good technique from hand to foot — and has shown the ability to mark overhead.

His second half of the season hasn't been up to the standard of his earlier outings, but in spurts has still been able to demonstrate a high level skill set.

Adam CERRA – Eastern Ranges
DOB: 7/10/99 | Ht: 185.9cm | Wt: 79.5kg

Cerra was a bit of a forgotten man entering this season. He played in the Ranges’ 2015 grand final team as a 16-year-old then missed most of 2016 with a knee injury meaning he was unable to force his way into the level two AFL Academy.

He started the season in fine touch for Eastern, was a class above in the Vic Metro trial at Visy Park and has been good in most of his games for Wesley College. His stats throughout the championships weren’t eye-catching, but he did most things well and showed his ability on the inside and out.

He has a great frame, ran a level 15 beep at Ranges’ pre-season testing and consistently produces high-level GPS numbers.

Currently out for the remainder of the season with a shoulder injury.

Paddy DOW – Bendigo Pioneers
DOB: 16/10/99 | Ht: 184.6cm | Wt: 80.4kg

Dow got his first taste of TAC Cup footy as a 16-year-old and has since split time between the Pioneers, school footy with Geelong Grammar and the AFL Academy, where he was added to the level two squad in late 2016.

He is a consistent ball winner at each level he has figured at over the past few seasons and has shown a good balance between winning contested ball in tight and getting into open space due to his agility and initial burst of speed – some scouts have used Patrick Dangerfield as a slight comparison.

At times he can use the ball more effectively, but he has good kicking technique, shows vision in traffic and has a knack for getting his hands on the ball around stoppages.

Thoughts on a hypothetical fellow Roos . Say Kelly stays put and have pick 1 , do we offer up pick 1 for St kildas 7&9 then try and package up Goldy + pick 18 for dogs pick 10 . Or stick with our pick 1?
I'd be more tempted to play funny buggers with pick 1 if JK does decide to come: turn 1 + Goldy into three 1sts, give two of them to GWS and use one, rather than just handing over pick 1.

Not that I'm in a hurry to run Goldy out of town. Substitute your tradeable asset of choice.

If pick 1 is ours to use, use it.

Bugger!

TOP DRAFT prospect Paddy Dow might not play again this year after suffering a shoulder injury in his best-on-ground effort last weekend.

The potential No.1 pick has been ruled out of the Bendigo Pioneers clash with the Oakleigh Chargers on Saturday and will require further scans next week to see if surgery is required.

Dow played through the injury to gather 35 disposals, seven inside-50s, six clearances and kick two goals last weekend for the Pioneers to further press his claims as a likely early selection at November's draft.

"He had an incident in last week's game and has been scanned since," the AFL Academies' high performance manager Paul Sealey said.

"He's got full mobility in the shoulder, but it's been referred and we'll have more information next week."
The best-case scenario for Dow would be a 2-3 week rehabilitation program that sees him available for the NAB AFL All Stars game in Grand Final week.

But surgery could also be an option if scan results are not positive. The Pioneers only have one game left for the home and away season of the TAC Cup after this weekend.

Dow is one of a handful of players in contention to be this year's first pick, alongside Cam Rayner, Luke Davies-Uniacke and Adam Cerra.

He has become a complete midfield prospect this season, showing his burst of speed from stoppages, balancing his inside grunt with outside run and has also shown he can push forward and make a scoreboard impact.

He was named as a midfielder in the NAB AFL Under-18 All Australian side after an impressive carnival for Vic Country's under-18 side.

The loser of the Brisbane Lions and North Melbourne clash on Saturday will claim this year's No.1 pick.

If someone like st.kilda wanted to trade their 2 first rounders for our top pick, I'd nearly be inclined to do it. We need multiple top 15 picks over a few years. 1 pick 1 doesn't make a team infinitely better.

If we were to do it, the main mids would be gone for sure. Rayner, Dow, LDU, Cerra, D.Fogarty. I reckon by that range we would have Stephenson, Coffield, Constable, Brander, O'Brien, Clark, Higgins, Brayshaw to pick as our best bets.

I wouldnt. What we need is an A grade mid or 2 added to the Higgins, Cunners, Clarke mix.

When fit we have a pretty solid back and forward 6. Its quality we need not quantity.

It seems young kids are hurting shoulders more these days
Kid's are being encouraged to hit the weights earlier and earlier these days and their growing frame can't handle it. Means the joints are susceptible to injury as they're not as stable as they would be.
There's a reason port severely limit the weights room for their young recruits.
