At this stage I'm avoiding the really expensive defensive premo's in favour of fitting 4 premo's in whilst still having most of the top priced mids.

So I've got: Adams, Laird, Johanissen and Hurley. Then my plan is see which of the top scoring premos fall and try to grab them a bit cheaper. I feel the difference with having some 90+ guys compared to some of the 100+ more expensive guys is acceptable given those conditions. I guess the risk is I never manage to upgrade to get some of the best players in the backline. I don't think any of the guys individually is too contentious but as a combination its probably not as strong as some other teams ones.

Adams - Possibly the highest potential of any defender but carries significant injury risk.
Laird - Pretty steady but did have a bit of injury concerns which slightly reduced his average last year.
Johanissen - Similar to Laird but a bit more potential for mine (but missed more games).
Hurley - I reckon he's capable of scoring similar to Rance but with a 70K discount. Won't always be getting the #1 forward either. Plus he's always been a great kick coming out of defense.
Re: Hurley....since he last played he's lost Carlisle and Fletcher playing alongside him down back. And there's talk of Hooker going forward too. Who will take the no 1 forward?

While a small sample size i found 2 games vlaustin definitely played midfield.
1. vs hawthorn of only 16 possessions and 6 tackles he managed 81 afl fantasy points.
2. In 2013 vs west coast he managed a 90 off 16 possessions and 3 goals. Small sample size but we an improved tank will be interesting to see how it goes

There's still a bit to be resolved before the season starts but my take on it is: Assuming Hooker plays forward then Hurley will play alongside 2 of: Hartley, Ambrose and Brown. My personal opinion is that Hartley and Ambrose will win out.

Ambrose is basically your tight shutdown defender who offers limited rebound - he actually played some real good shutdown games on players like Josh Kennedy and both Riewoldts. If he's in the 22 I think its very likely he picks up the best forward quite often. He's quite the athlete endurance wise and is very good at sticking to his man but lacks a point of difference outside of this.

Hartley is taller, has a great kick but probably not as defensively solid. He will sometimes take the #1 forward if they are a taller/bigger type eg Hawkins, Dixon.

Hurley will still play on the #1 forward sometimes but just because he is the best defender we have available (given Hooker forward) doesn't mean that he always will.

I don't think this is one of those cases, seems to have been given the boot in favour of Oleg taking his position. Is definitely happening
I currently have Hibberd at D4. I'm not yet convinced on him and want to see his role in JLT. If not Hibberd I'll be looking at Hartlett but with the Vlastuin news I'll be keeping an eye on him.

Two players I'm kinda curious about are Ricky Henderson at Hawks and Mills. Possible break outs or am I having some sort of an episode that I need slapping out of?
lots of talk about who will take Titch's spot at the Swans, will it be Heeney or Mills or both? unsure, both risky.

Henderson had that one decent season where he averaged 85-95 but thats it, wont be more than a role player at the Hawks. Pass

Montagna, Adams, Laird. Looking carefully at Touhey, Rampe in preseason games. Although Ryan and Stewart had shoulder injuries they're locks.

  • Thompson could replace Rory Laird ($526,800, DEF), who could gain more midfield minutes despite two consecutive selections in the 40-man All-Australian squad.
  • With Travis Cloke now at the Bulldogs, Lachie Keeffe ($165,900, DEF) has emerged as the surprise candidate to fill Collingwood’s second tall forward chasm.
  • All-Australian key defender Cale Hooker ($444,900, DEF/FWD) is being groomed to partner Joe Daniher inside forward 50,
  • Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti ($392,300, DEF) moved forward late in 2016 and is expected to stay in that role this year, while swingman Aaron Francis ($259,400, DEF/FWD) could settle into a third tall forward role.
  • Elsewhere, Kade Kolodjhasnij ($375,400, DEF) is the fittest he’s felt since arriving at the Suns, with more midfield time not out of the question.
  • Christian Salem ($379,500, DEF), who has been training with the club’s on-ball brigade this off-season. Now that he’s recovered from his bizarre concussion courtesy of a brick, Salem will be pushing hard for a Round 1 berth in the senior side.
  • The time has come for the Kangaroos to unleash Shaun Atley ($353,400, DEF) on the ball.
  • After spending the majority of his first four seasons at the Tigers in the defensive 50, Nick Vlastuin ($407,800, DEF) is finally set to be unleashed in the Tigers’ midfield this season
  • Competition for spots down back could free Leigh Montagna ($538,100, DEF) up to play more up the ground this season
  • As highly-rated junior midfielders, Isaac Heeney ($433,400, FWD) and Callum Mills ($420,000, DEF) have started their AFL careers in the forward and back lines respectively — and performed superbly. But coach John Longmire is expected to unleash his two rising stars in the middle more often this year
