Im not sure they can pay a players wage if he isn't under contract.
I'd expect Gc to pick up motlop as a free agent paying him good money allowing Geelong to get good compensation. Then ablett goes to Geelong for a player and a pick swap. With that players wage being payed. Someone fringe like Lang or thurlow.

Someone help me as to why we would want Motlop? A lazy one way player when we are trying to build a professional culture.
Even if we are surely this is not part of the Ablett trade, it’s like paying Geelong twice, give them Grablett for nothing and then remove a lazy player on big money. WTF

Yes l'm not sold on him either BUT l think May is the man who could turn him around and l have no doubt he has the goods to be a very good player.

He has been played out of position for most of this season for some reason, according to champion data last year he was rated as Elite as a small forward kicked 38 goals when he was playing mainly as a half forward. This year Scott put him up on a wing and his performance dropped a lot he only kicked about 22 goals I tbink

One of Geelong best players in both finals. You say he's lazy but he's Geelong best running player, a change of club will do him well. Would be a great pickup for us.
+ he will not be apart of the Ablett trade

Ainsworth is not getting pushed out of anything by Motlop.
The facts are Motlop has played like dog shit for 2 years on a bloated contract he got on potential. He has shown up to pre-season out of shape 2 years ago (Tom Nicholls already likes him) so big risk to give this guy a long term contract when we are trying to turn the corner as an organisation.
If he played like he did 3 years ago he would be alright but so many question marks around this place.
I would describe him as a poor man's Aaron Hall.

Agree with all of this so why are we chasing him, I know it’s been said he may be the best we can get but Harley was a better bet than Motlop and we flicked him for a half eaten pie. Makes zero sense to me
Without hearing it I would say that some moron like Dwayne thinks that's the trade and has no clue that Motlop is a free agent.
The only way Motlop is involved in an Ablett trade is if the Cats are giving us the compensation pick they get for him as part of a bigger deal.
The 3 reason I can think of are:
1. They want to bring in senior AFL players
2. He's mates with May and actually wants to come here
3. Costs us nothing as a free agent
The fact that he is not very good seems to have escaped the recruitment department

More Likely that it would be an end of first likely pick 20 if Rockcliff goes

Thats when a trade would come into play.
Motlop is decent on the outside but we dont really have outside deficiencies.
We need defensive inside players that complement the outside.
Motlop is a cream on the top style player.. Thats where the forum disagrees on whether we need him.
We may not be at the stage in our rebuild to justify having him.

He won't get Rockliff money otherwise there needs to be an inquest into gross negligence.
People are thinking it will be band 3 which is after the Cats 2nd rd pick around 34/35
