How's Hanley been?
Looked pretty rusty when he was on. Not a lot of chasing or 2nd efforts from what I saw, but none the less it was good to see him out there. Didnt see him go down at all, but he was stretching his calf at times, but not sure what's wrong.

Ah Chee has been moved to half-back and I don't mind it from what I've seen. Has used his pace well and his kicking and decision making has looked good.

Also saw Scrim and Ainsworth walk past just before. Ainsworth has a compression bandage around his quad still but looks like he is moving well and I swear every time I see Jack he has grown another 2cm and put on 5kg. Is a very solid unit already.

Gold Coast jumped to third on the NEAFL ladder after a hard-fought 16-point victory over Aspley in one of the matches of the season so far on Saturday afternoon.

Scores were level at three-quarter time as injuries took their toll on both sides, but it was the Suns who found an extra gear to run out 13.9 (87) to 10.13 (73) winners at South Pine Sports Complex.

No more than eight points separated the sides for the entire first half as a brutal contest also showed flashes of brilliance with numerous highlights.

Aspley lost experienced defender Jackson Allen to an ankle injury in the second quarter, but the Suns has troubles of their own with Pearce Hanley (ankle) and Mitch Hallahan (hamstring) heading to the showers by half-time.

At the main break, the Suns held a four-point lead courtesy of a 75m bomb by defender Trent McKenzie shortly before the siren, as the two sides continued to trade blows.

Cameron Loersch was the first to strike in the third to extend the Suns’ lead, but the Hornets had squared the match up by the 21-minute mark when Daniel Joseph had his second major for the term.

Academy member Mitch Olarenshaw gave the Suns some breathing space to start the last, and Brad Scheer had the momentum squarely in Gold Coast’s favour when he made it two-in-a-row at the 10-minute mark.

A costly kick-in error from gallant Aspley defender Gavin Grose gifted the Suns a third straight goal for the quarter to extend their lead to a game-high 18 points during time-on, where Gold Coast kept their opponents at bay for the remainder of the match.

Gold Coast NEAFL coach, Stephen Daniel, said precautions were taken with both Hanley and Hallahan’s injuries, in a match where he said the players showed plenty of spirit to come away with a win.

“We took a little while to get going, which was a little frustrating from our point of view, but in the end we showed a lot of heart which is quite exciting to see from the group to get up and over the line,” he said.

“Contested possessions are something we like to pride ourselves on, and in the end I think we ended up winning by a considerable margin (159-123), so we were pretty happy with that.

“Pearce just rolled his ankle, so it was a bit precautionary – we didn’t want to put him back out there. If we did, and he further injured it, I think I’d be in a lot of trouble and looking for a new job next week.”

Callum Ah Chee was superb for the Suns in a defensive role, finishing with 22 disposals, seven rebound 50s and a goal.

Schoenfeld (30 disposals), Scheer and McKenzie (32 disposals, seven rebound 50s) were also catalysts in the victory.

Reece Toye led the Hornets through the midfield with 19 disposals, seven clearances and two goals, while Joseph (19 disposals), Barlow (24 disposals) and Grose (20 disposals) were instrumental.

The Suns will take on Brisbane in a 2 v 3 blockbuster next week at Metricon Stadium, while the Hornets also have a mouth-watering clash of their own when they host Sydney University at Graham Rd.

It unfortunately looks like several senior listed players and rookies are destined to finish their AFL careers in the reserves. Hard to see Willis and Loersch to name a few ever getting an opportunity in the seniors.

Things can change quickly , i remember everyone had Aaron Hall's card marked then he turned it on in NEAFL , now Hall on the weekend was tagged in a team with Ablett in it.

Great to see Schoey dominating.
Does Tmac come in? he seems to be fit and firing!
If Rory is fit, im not sure who comes out for Trent... Maybe Bowes but he is improving every game..
I just reckon we need a fit Mckenzie in our best 22... he might start playing like his buddy Fish..

Rory and McKenzie both out

Muhammad Saad seems to be building some decent enough form, need to get him to the 18 disposals-per-game average to get his confidence up. I feel he's gotta be due for a big game soon, the NEAFL Rising Star needs more competition.

Was really happy that the Suns seem to finally have depth (yes, this is the 2nd season I thought that). Cal, pretty much like Jack (Martin), needed to balance attack with defence. Liking the look of those stats.
