Contracts can be renegotiated, amended or even torn up, provided all parties give their consent. Port just had to suitably compensate the SMA, and the SMA would decide what's suitable, but that was never going to happen because as we all know Port's finances aren't great.

This meant they would need to buy an away game from another club, the problem there is they couldn't afford that either. So in the end they had to settle for GC, who only agreed to this because they saw some benefit in it for them due to their own prior dealings with the Chinese.

The fun part was when Port began to pretend they were the home team by telling GC to play in alternative colours. As if GC were ever going to give up on one of their biggest marketing tools to the Chinese people when that objective was the only reason they agreed to participate in this sideshow to begin with. If Port had paid them for the game it would've been a different story, but Port have been relying on others to pay the bills throughout this whole story. Hence why they ran to the AFL to try and get what they wanted.

It's not about their finances, they could get out of the contract likely for nothing. AO would be fine with them having one less home game, if we had an extra game at AO. A team who doesn't expect to contend this year, but needs cash, like North, would probably take the money they would earn by having a home game at AO that brought in 45-50k non-members through the gate.

They don't want us playing an extra game in SA though and their members wouldn't be happy about paying the same for less games.

Port Adelaide has retained 11 home games at Adelaide Oval and bought Gold Coast’s home match at Metricon Stadium to move it to Shanghai
Port put up the money for it.

The solution is simple. Port sacrifices their home Showdown, giving Adelaide two home Showdowns. Both Port and Adelaide still play the same total number of AO games.

Port then buys a home game in China and foots the bill for the away team to fly there.

What does AO get out of that though? it means they host 21 games instead of 22. It would mean Port have 9 home games (1 lost to china, one lost to us) and we have 12.

Nah. AO would still get 22 games. Adelaide gets 12 home games (2 home Showdowns) at AO. Port gets 10 home games at AO (they normally get 11, but they sacrifice their home Showdown). Port then plays their 11th home game in China.

I've got a port power mate whose got a close connection with a senior port player who was telling me last night that Hinkley has completely lost the players. Sounds a bit like Sando in that he has favourites etc
They were told if they work hard they will have success.

They worked hard for two years and failed.

That playing group have reverted back to the lazy sods they were under Primus.

The deal was done because the AFL lent on the SANFL and if this did not happen the game would not have been played at Adelaide Oval.
Port Adelaide & Adelaide were under contract to play all games at Football Park.
The same now applies to both Clubs at Adelaide Oval.
And if Port didn't push to be allowed to play that home game at Adelaide Oval the AFL wouldn't have done anything and it wouldn't have been moved. The same as now. Port didn't want to play a home game in China and made 0 effort to make that happen.

If they really wanted it, it would have happened.

Your maths doesn't work.

Port have 11 games at AO, we have 11.

They give 1 to us, Port have 10, we have 12.

They take one to china, Port have 9, we have 12.

Jumping back on the China Crisis, just listening to 5aa and the question once again was asked why Port didn't sell a home game and Rucci said that due the contract at the Adelaide Oval they couldn't. Maybe this has been answered somewhere but why couldn't they then sell a Showdown? Or am I shaking the wrong end of the stick?
Tuat is BS.

I am sure the SMA would accept compensation in the amount they/AFL are paying Gold Coast.

They were contracted to play 11 home games at Footy Park, yet played a home game at Adelaide Oval in 2010.

They dont want to upset their members.

Let me guess. The favorites got to go to the US recently?

You are assuming Port swaps an additional AO home game for the China game. Port gives us their home Showdown, then plays their 11th home match in China.

Adelaide: 12 home matches at AO (+1), 10 away
Port: 10 home matches at AO (-1), 1 home match in China, 9 away

That only works if they take the showdown to china. They need to take a game to china, which means they have to give up another home game.

Of course it's about the finances, their crowds have been good at AO (for now). To forfeit a home game to another venue where they draw a lesser crowd means a financial sacrifice.

How does it not work. The end maths is exactly the same as before.

Before:
Port: 11 home games at AO, 1 away Showdown at AO, 10 away = 22 games (11 home, 11 away)
Adelaide: 11 home games at AO, 1 away Showdown at AO, 10 away = 22 games (11 home, 11 away)
Adelaide Oval: 11 Port home games, 11 Adelaide home games = 22 games

After:
Port: 10 home games at AO, 1 home game in China, 2 away Showdowns at AO, 9 away = 22 games (11 home, 11 away)
Adelaide: 12 home games at AO, 10 away = 22 games (12 home, 10 away)
Adelaide Oval: 12 Adelaide home games, 10 Port home games = 22 games

Changes:
Adelaide: Gain home match at AO, lose away match at AO
Port: Gain home match at China, lose home match at AO

Imagine you have 22 coins in a circle, 11 heads, 11 tails. These coins signify games at AO, heads means a crows game, tails means a port game. Now imagine another circle this signifies games in china, try to get a coin in the china circle while keeping 22 coins in the AO circle, by only flipping one coin from tails to heads.

You obviously don't understand what I am saying.

In your coin scenario, what is occurring is a single flip from tails to heads. Easy. Done. Adelaide Oval is satisfied/don't care.

Suddenly, Port now has an opportunity. Port has flipped the coin and gone from 11 home games to 10. They can add an extra home game! So they bring in an extra coin for China.

Adelaide Crows are happy because now they have 12 home games.

How much did Port pay the Suns for a "home" game in China?
My understanding is Port have not paid the Suns anything...
AFL’s China push headed by Port-Suns competition game
While it is a Port Adelaide initiative, the club has not given up a home game, instead purchasing one from the Gold Coast as part of the negotiations. The Australian reported earlier this year the Suns had been paid more than $600,000 as part of the deal.
Suns chairman Tony Cochrane said the business and sponsorship opportunities associated with selling the fixture offset the negatives of surrendering a home game for the fledgling club, which is yet to play finals.

Adelaide Crows are happy because now they have 12 home games.

In order to bring in an extra coin, that needs to be someone else's home game.

You have 22 coins, the AO circle needs 22 coins, the only way you can have 22 coins in the AO circle and have one in the china circle is to get a 23rd coin, that 23rd coin is someone else's home game. If they are buying someone else's home game, there is no reason to give us their showdown.

try it, get 22 coins out and see if you can find a way to have 23 coins without getting another coin because getting another coin means buying another team's home game.

Okay let me expand the maths to the entire league then.

Before:
Port: 11 home, 11 away = 22 games
Adelaide: 11 home, 11 away = 22 games
All other matches: 176 home, 176 away = 352 games
Total: 198 home, 198 away = 396 games

After:
Port: 11 home, 11 away = 22 games
Adelaide: 12 home, 10 away = 22 games
All other matches: 176 home, 176 away = 352 games
Total: 199 home, 197 away = 396 games

The other 352 matches are unaffected. In both scenarios every other team still plays 11 home and 11 away games.

Who is paying the $600K?

Port don't have $600K - when was the last time you made this amount of profit.

The AFL are paying the Suns for moving their home game to China.

As usual, others are paying the way for Port...
