Who is going to have a late start to preseason?
A. Pearce
Neale (post season operation)
Yarran? Injured again in WAFL Grand Final, but not as bad as last year.
Fyfe? Is he back on track completely now?
Anyone else?

Hamling and kersten will be hungover from their oversea trip it looks like.

I think there is a bit of mentoring that is required. Throwing them in the deep end and losing for 2-3 years would just build a losing culture.

This is what I keep arguing about the whole thing. 2016 was an injury riddled season where playing youth was required to make something of the year. 2017 must be seen as trying to win every game. Ross Lyon will play kids when they prove their form.

I think pick 7 is the only under 10 game player that should be a walk up best 22 all year. The rest should prove their worth with pre-season form and peel form if they have senior player competition in their position. Collins should never be picked above Dawson by some "play the youth" mantra. We don't want to foster a culture of noncompetitive losing. We don't want to become Brisbane 2.0 with good players like Fyfe, Neale, and Walters in a losing culture! We need to push for top 6, not top 8.

Get a home final in the elimination round

Equally though we shouldn't turn to the guys (Dawson, Suban, D. Pearce etc) who ultimately have shown they don't have what it takes to get us that premiership. I'd say only Johnson, Sandi and Mundy out of our older players should be guaranteed a game when fit.

Collins shits all over Dawson. Dawson would give away as many free kicks and be beaten on just as many contests. Collins is future Dawson is past. Future is now

100% agree (apart from the fact I think Collins is already better than Dawson), I'm going to take your response to FreoMonocle as a response to me but if thats not the case then fine. If you look through the team I suggested they have all played at least 10 games I believe, and I havent included Balic, Pick 7 or Collins. We can pick a best 22 that prioritizes youth without going crazy. I think everyone I've included could be arguably best 22 on current form anyway but my main point is where it is close, priority should be given to youth.

I particularly dont understand why people are putting Ibbo in the team. He was depth last year and played terribly, suddenly he plays one good game and everyone has him back in their best 22. I do think there is a case for Spurr and Ballas in the team as they are the best at their roles at the moment but there is enough experience across the different lines to be to play as many kids as possible as far as I am concerned

Just quietly I believe our recruiting team deserves a whole lot of praise for the past 3 years of drafting.

2013: Apeness (developing nicely), A Pearce (gun), Grey (hope he stays), Taberner (developing nicely).
2014: Weller (gun), Blakely (gun), Langdon (gun), Deluca (hope he stays), Hughes (developing nicely).
2015: Tucker (gun), Balic (gun), Collins (solid), Yarran (freak).

If it's anything to go by our drafting team know what they're doing in recent times, hope they can replicate their successful picks in the coming draft, especially now that we have a top 10 pick we haven't had in a while.

Snuff, you'd said earlier "Next year isnt about making the 8 IMO, its about getting games into as many young players with talent as possible".

I'd read that as "play da yoof" and took less note of the emphasis on "as possible".

Fast tracking the young uns - or earning a spot, we'll see more younguns in the 22 than we have generally played (injuries aside) due to the extensive list changes.

I wonder how Ross is going? All of the players delisted this year were your stereotypical Ross Lyon player; footsoldiers; role players; not the most skillful but they gave their all. I think the game's changed so much in the past few years that you can't carry too many of these players anymore. The new list has pace and skill bursting at the seams.

To be fair, it wasnt really the best explanation on my part, "as possible" is pretty vague. As much as I love the hype around Balic (and the inevitable pick 7 hype) they do need to earn their spot. I suppose I just think players like Tucker, Langdon (BOG in Peel GF in my mind and great end to last year) & Crozier have shown they are best 22, or close to it, and should be played ahead of Ballas, D Pearce and Ibbo if its a close thing. As well as the development side, it helps keep them around and if they were to decide to leave, they would have more value (thinking more of Langdon here).

As long as he doesn't try to turn the current crop into role playing foot soldiers...can probably play the game plan he was trying for this year.

Normally this is too many but considering we recruited 4 x 21-23 year olds that should be best 25 at minimum, it means we are only getting 5 more plus rookies. A respectable tally for a team finishing 3rd bottom.

Could be six , as precautions for MJ .
