Silvagni delisted.. This is definitely a brutal rebuild, no holds barred. This will ruffle a lot of the fans. Dawson, D. Pearce and Suban keep their spots. Very very lucky they have a contract with the likes of Barlow, De boer and silvagni gone
This is a Carlton under Bolton list change. After next year we will have turned over half our list.

I hope after all is said and done Ross proves all the doubters wrong, that he can rebuild a list. I said it earlier this year, we are about to see the making of Ross and Nat as coach and captain of the first premiership for Freo.

So looking at the 13 list changes, only 2 of them were 1st rounders (Pav & Mora), 1 was a late 2nd rounder (TSmith), and the rest were all 3rd rounders through rookie. If you take out Pav (retired not delisted) and Mora (injury after injury) it paints a pretty clear picture of our list strategy. We clearly want to draft better skills, trade in players to fill positional gaps and to sacrifice the older role players to make room. It's been ruthless but overall I think we have gained a lot (only through trade so far) without giving up that much.

The only fly in the ointment being the expansion teams. GWS will start their reign of terror soon, which will make Hawthorns threepeat pale by significance.

How do you guys feel about play Ed Langdon out of defense? I feel like he could be like the norm smith but actually able to hit targets. Also freo are looking for a bit of run out of the back half and I feel him alongside Tucker could be the answer to the problem.

Langdons kicking isn't great. Weller is a much better option in that role.

I'm just thinking of the WAFL grand final and him running from 50 to 50 twice (i think). Reminded me of Johannisen's GF game except Langdon was able to hit targets and didn't get the BOG (i thought he deserved it though).

Just quietly I believe our recruiting team deserves a whole lot of praise for the past 3 years of drafting.

2013: Apeness (developing nicely), A Pearce (gun), Grey (hope he stays), Taberner (developing nicely).
2014: Weller (gun), Blakely (gun), Langdon (gun), Deluca (hope he stays), Hughes (developing nicely).
2015: Tucker (gun), Balic (gun), Collins (solid), Yarran (freak).

If it's anything to go by our drafting team know what they're doing in recent times, hope they can replicate their successful picks in the coming draft, especially now that we have a top 10 pick we haven't had in a while.
This is crap. The "last 3 years drafts" always looks good, because the players haven't played enough games for their faults to be apparent. ie this same thread in 2010 would have had Suban, Clancee, Broughton etc as "guns". Suban was the future captain 2 years in.

I mean Balic is a gun? I must have missed those games he dominated at AFL level

Decided to re-visit our under 27 possible future B22 to see how it might look:

B Hughes Hamling Tucker
HB [1] APearce Crozier
C SHill Fyfe BHill
HF Bennell McCarthy [2]
F Apeness [3] Walters
R Clarke [4] Neale
I Balic Weller Blakely Langdon

Depth: Tabs, Kersten, Collins, Sutcliffe, Sheridan, Uebergang, Nyhuis

The depth could fill the missing roles but looking at future drafts and trades, I'd suggest something like:
*1 - a speedy x-factor half back - eg Marlion Pickett, Cedric Cox, Sam Walker, Bailey Morrish... Weller can play there but I think long term we should play him in the midfield and recruit some specialist half backs instead.
*2 - trade for Jack Martin if possible as a dangerous MID/FWD to play alongside Bennell and Walters.
*3 - hopefully Tabs/Kersten show us something special next year but even so I think we'll still need a polished primary KPF type like a lot of the best teams have. Maybe we'll get another crack at Hogan later but in the meantime we need some prospects, so suggest we draft another speculative this draft and maybe use our 1st rounder next year on a KPF.
*4 - our pick #7 this year should slot here long term imo - SPS/Brodie/Taranto/Scrimshaw/Logue, any of these might fit well replacing Mundy inside alongside Fyfe, Neale, Balic and Blakely (with others rotating through).

Not surprisingly the main question marks in that B22 are our rucks so we'd want to draft and/or trade in some more options over the next couple of years but I don't think we should panic yet. And Hughes is still unproven but Nyhuis, Ueber and Collins (plus maybe Marcus Adams next year) gives us plenty of options in those rebounding KPD, small/tall defender and intercepting defender roles. We still also need to draft a small x-factor small forward to replace Ballas - eg Liam Ryan, Willie Rioli...

I think overall it looks pretty decent with a good balance of youth and experience, and within a couple of years with some good drafting and trading we should see some long term success again.

Then you don't exactly have any support in saying that it's crap either then do you. Excuse someone for sharing a bit of optimism God knows this site needs it sometimes. All these players bar Balic and Deluca have made their debuts and none of them have performed notably poorly. And yes Balic hasn't played a senior game yet but I watched the entire 4 quarters of every single Peel Thunder final and even after an entire year off football Balic performed exceptionally well in all finals, better than some who've been in the system for years. I'm more excited about his potential than any other player we've had on our list in recent times.

I stand by my statement, the recruitment team have done very well the past 3 years, call it crap all you want but that's my understanding.

And no I never saw 'Suban as our future Captain after 2 years in' thanks for quoting me on that.

Thought I'd give it a crack

FB: Spurr A.Pearce Sutcliffe*1
HB: Crozier Hamling Johnson*2
Mid: B.Hill Mundy*3 S.Hill
HF: Bennell MaCarthy Tabs*4
FF: Yarran Apeness*5 Walters
R: Sandi Neale Fyfe
Int: Blakely Ballas*6 Weller Sheridan

Rough average age = 25.5 However if you substitute Johnson with Collins it comes to 25.04. Our next oldest players are Sandi (obviously), Mundy, Spurr and Yarran.

Emergencies: Balic, Langdon, Clarke
Pushing for selection: Kersten, Dawson, Collins, Suban, Tucker, D.Pearce & Ibbo
Solid Peel contributors for the first half of the year: New draftees, Hughes, #7, Griffin, Uber, Nyhuis, Anyone else I've missed.

*1 Sutcliffe: I've seen him out of almost every 22 including the AFL's but Ross loves him. He's a perennial pre-season TTHD and usually does everything he's asked of. In a more flowing, talent-laden team such as this I can see him doing well. Doubt he'll play any less than 15 games unless injury or he seriously goes south.
*2 Johnson: Obviously b22 whenever fit however not sure how long that will be. Probably won't travel and be replaced with Collins/Dawson or Ibbo. Possibly Logue if he's our #7 pick
*3 Mundy: I can see him drifting more in a defensive mid role later on in the year as a HB and distributor of the ball in the back half to allow players such as Blakely to get more midfield minutes.
*4 Taberner: I still see him as a B22 at the start of the season. Could however be replaced by Kersten at any stage and will need to do everything he can to retain his spot. If our forwardline gels I hope he can roam up the ground a bit and be a high half forward type player.
*5 Apeness: With Apeness as a FF/R I've left Clarke out and assumed Sandi will do 70-80% of the rucking. Would like to see him play 22 games.
*6 Ballas: I still see him as best 22 and without Maynes defensive efforts I think he will have a role to play. May not kick a lot of goals but if you look at that forward lines potency compared to previous years it's a lot less predictable which could suit him.

We have traded in 4 players that have played AFL and are not rookies .
We were the trend setting club that recruited mature age players and got a terrific boost as a result .
Our first pick should be English as he is the only genuine ruckman in the top 50 prospects of this years draft because we have two aging ruckmen and English will need 2 to 3 years to get up to speed . Apeness is the only developing ruckman on our list and hopefully he is able to have a full preseason this year .The late Draft picks that we should consider Marlion Pickett and Blair Bell. In the Rookie Draft Kieran May and Nicholas Merritt both are Peel players .
My reasoning for the three Peel players is one that these kids are talented and secondly that it will improve the belief that the alignment is working so more young talent will want to be at Peel .
The remaining older players will be fully tested this year to see if they remain on the list into next year , the Club has sent everyone the message that no one is indispensable , injury's that keep you unavailable for any extended period of time ie Calfs , knees , backs ,ankles or recurring soft tissue injuries and they will delist you .
Those that the Club will be watching very closely in that area IMHO are Ballantyne , Mundy ,Johnson ,Ibbotson ,Bennell and Yarran .

Apart from blair bell , those peel guy not even close to grey and deluca level. Make no sense.

My 22:

FB: A. Pearce Johnson Dawson
HB: Crozier Spurr Hamling
MID: S. Hill Mundy B. Hill
HF: H. Bennell Apeness Yarran
FF: Walters McCarthy Ballantyne
R: Neale Sandilands Fyfe

INT: Kersten, Weller, Blakely, Langdon

Phwoah... what a potential line-up.

Apeness as second-ruck over Clarke for me - Sandi can ruck purely all match whereas Apeness can back-up and act as a 3rd tall.

Back-Up Defenders: Ibbotson, Collins, Sutcliffe, Sheridan and Hughes... not bad!
Back-Up Midfielders: D. Pearce, Balic, Tucker, Suban
Back-Up Forwards and Rucks: Griffin, Taberner, Clarke

Some good depth there, not including who we draft this year - nor considering the development of up and coming players such as Nyhuis, Uebergang etc.

Deluca and Grey are not gone yet and they should be given a rookie contract .Bell is quality so is May . Merritt is a Colt but he played in a league game against South Fremantle and though he was beaten in the ruck most of the day because Clarke ,Griffin and Hannath were not available he competed all day and won a number of centre bounce downs . He has a fantastic fitness level and he worked tirelessly all day .Strom and Shaw were cramping up in the last quarter but Merritt was still running and presenting which is why I think he deserves a chance .

I only want blair bell, i thought milward is pretty handy too . May and merritt not that impressive, still think rookie list darcy cam is a very good option with stradica . Worse come to worse delisted them next season.

and Bennell

Bell is another neither here or nor there type player. Not big enough for a key and not quick enough for a small. He is Yarran without the pace. If he gets a rookie spot good luck to him but..........

Played some good games through the year but he really needed a big one in the GF to have a chance for mine. Love his strength but no wow factor and I am stating to think his best is just a very good WAFL player.

Merritt has potential and WC reportedly very interested in Darcy Cameron due to their ruck stocks being depleted by injury. Blair Bell very much in the Viv Mitchie mould but harder in the contest like Clancee Pearce .
