Ok... i'm a little preplexed by this

As soon as we caught wind that Gold Coast would be trading pick 2 for Weller (which the general consensus is waay overs), why didn't we approach Gold Coast and say "we'll offer you pick 4 and Swallow for pick 2"?

That way Gold Coast would have still got Weller for pick 4 and would have obtained Weller and Swallow for their pick 2 rather than just Weller?

Even if it meant that we might have to pay part of Swallow's contract, there is no way that would have been an issue.

I feel like someone has fallen asleep at the wheel here because i can't think of any reason why Gold Coast wouldn't have jumped at this given the situation.

It would mean that we would be in a position to pretty much secure whoever we want in the draft and not leave it to the lap of the gods because goodness knows who Freo have their eye on.

I think the answer to this is that apart from when the GC was being set up and a number of players were happy to accept tattslotto deals to be part of that club, Weller is the first player in the history of the world to actually want to go and join the GC. The GC is like a dead person walking and if it was here in Victoria, as soon as the law is passed to allow euthanasia ( or as Arthur Cloke would probably call it "youth in asia"), it would be the first recipient of the new law.

Having got over the initial shock of hearing that he wanted to head to the GC, Freo would have been salivating with excitement, realising that at last they had an opportunity to do a "Pelican" like trade with another club.

And how could the GC not cave in, when nearly every other player they have wants to leave. They just had to do the deal.

Are you seriously suggesting GC would take swallow on AND pay 450 points for the privilege?

nothing wrong with a bit of positive thinking but shesh, thats "alternative universe thread" material.

The problem with Goldy is the form to contract value ratio.

Needed better form or less contract value.

Yep, hence why people need to be realistic about trade scenarios.

We certainly don’t have enough quality to cover the loss of players with currency without leaving our backsides bare for all to see.

There weren’t players of significance that we would have gotten for decent value with the picks we had.

We went for elite talent before the trade period had even started.

Critisise the club for failing to land Kelly and Martin but I’m not sure why people have lost their shit over our inactivity during this trade period.

I don't disagree, the Clarke decision was an absolute disgrace. We will forever get shafted when it comes to awards like us because lets face it, no one gives a shit about us unless there is an opportunity to dig the boots in!

That aside, i feel there's a lot of rose coloured glasses action going on in here. At the end of the day, none of our kids have put their hand up as future superstars at this point and like it or not, if we want to win a premiership, we will need at least a few of them.

Before you get upset and jump back down my throat again, i need you to understand that when it comes to our youth, i am far more reserved than most. I am not canning any of them in any way, i prefer to afford them the time to truly shine before blowing their trumpet. It probably means i'm always going to be last on the bus but i don't care.

Look I don't expect them to be superstars and I'm expecting a bottom of the table finish to build from the 2018 draft. If we can get 1-2 elite out of that group and the rest being role players, it isn't all doom and gloom like others are making it out to be. Heck even * got out the crap they were in.

I still do not believe that Freo wouldn't have taken pick 4

NM OUT: Pick 4; Swallow
NM IN: Pick 2

GC OUT: Pick 2; Matera
GC IN: Weller, Swallow

FREM OUT: Weller
FREM IN: Pick 4

Looks good on paper. But needlessly complicates the deal for GC/FREM.

Sorry, i'm not understanding your arguement or perhaps you're not understanding mine

FFS nobody is giving up pick 2 for Swallow pick swap.

Interesting that Wallett said the Sydney pick upgrade with Collingwood was aimed at securing Nick Blakey next year.

BTW how do you know that we never tried to swap pick 4 and Swallow for pick 2?

You don't. You are just assuming things.

You're right... it is an assumption. But i don't see any reason why we couldn't have made this work. GC are better off and Freo would still be getting what everyone believes is overs for Weller.

If you were Freo would you say to the GC, "Yeah you do that trade, we are happy to take pick 4 instead of pick 2"? Of course not. Nothing in it whatsoever for Freo.

The trade period is such an unnecessarily drawn out process.

Despite all the bluff and bluster, magically all the so-called "stalemate" deals get done at the last second.

Trade period could be one day all the same deals get done, it's a joke really.

Just an opportunity for AFL and footy clubs to stay in media longer against cricket/horse racing etc i suspect.

NORTH MELBOURNE

Who Left: Sam Gibson (Adelaide Crows)

Who Arrived: N/A

Draft Picks: 4, 23, 64, 78, 91, 96

Champion Data says: “If North Melbourne had been able to offer say Todd Goldstein to GWS and say ‘we will still pay 90 per cent of his salary’, GWS may have been willing to pay as high as Pick 11 just because they get a player for the next two or three years. It’s a real surprise that they weren’t able to leverage their excess cap space that they weren’t able to spend on Dustin Martin or Josh Kelly and use it in the trade period.”

Chris Pelchen says: “This is not sitting in judgment of any person at North Melbourne, but what I will say is that as a club I’m disappointed. If you are going to rebuild, you have to get more than one pick in every round of the draft. That’s what you get every year as a given anyway. For them to be so dormant in the trade period, they needed to actually be trading players out to get returns for. I’d hardly say Pick 91 indicates an aggressive rebuild. I think they let themselves down in a very critical period.”

Grade: D

All well and good when Goldie won't leave Melbourne.

Pelchen's felchin.

Completely agree with this. We are looking to play young players as we rebuild our list and therefore were happy to let Swallow go. For the same reason I found it hard to imagine why GC would want to give a valuable list place to Swallow, let alone play him in place of the young players on their list

Fair enough. If it turns out that Gold Coast weren't at all interested in Swallow then it answers my arguement.

Given that a deal wasn't reached in any sense, perhaps that is indeed the case....
