Posted this in the Swans Pies game thread, but anyone else hear Richo comment on the NRL game happening next door in Sydney? (Couldn’t be bothered typing all again so just copy and paste from there):

RICHO GOES BANG!

out of absolutely nowhere:

“JUST QUICKLY JB, THERES A LOT MORE PEOPLE HERE THAN AT THE NRL NEXT DOOR”

Edit: and he’s not wrong lol..

Imagine if LU knuckledraggers got a hold of this hahahaha
If only swans tv ratings were as impressive as their crowds. This game would be lucky to get 50-60k on fta whereas the nrl match will get 200k to 300k. Thats the difference in the Sydney market between the codes.

Would be great, but so would daily blowies. In a foreign market, at least they are turning up at numbers way above the local codes average.

And the Storm get very ordinary ratings in Melb.Perth.Adelaide and Tassie plus they are still only averaging 17,000 ctowds after 20 very successful seasons

Official crowd: 20,748 at Etihad Stadium Now theres a shocker for two Melbourne teams!
Yes agree but let’s be serious what else can we expect. St Kilda have had an appalling year that can’t end fast enough. The bulldogs slightly better but pitiful last week. I can see why many of their fans decided to stay home and watch on tv.. Can’t sell a turd and this game was pretty close to as a dead rubber as a late season match at Ethihad on a Saturday night can be.

Given that they barely get 200k on Friday nights I very much doubt they’re getting 200 to 300k on Saturday nights on fta in Sydney.

Official crowd: 39,238 at the SCG Now thats a very good crowd and looked great on TV with plenty of noise and atmosphere.

Only the 5th time this century they’ve got over 39k at the SCG.

They would get a zero on a Saturday Night as there are no FTA Saturday games until the last few rounds of the season as far as I recall. Maybe the 200 to 300k would be their Foxtel national rating

Edit: Just checked this was the first weekend of the Saturday Night games on 9 until the end of the season. Yeah doubt it would rate high as everyone would assume it was on Fox

Little birdie tells me that tonight’s crowd at the SCG drew more people than the 4 games combined in the NRL round so far..

That is insane.

Theres been 6 games in the round so far, all in nsw

Sat NRL - Eels v Titans Attendance: 6,158 at ANZ Stadium
Sat NRL - Dragons v Warriors Attendance: 13,924 at WIN Stadium
Fri NRL - Rabbitohs v Storm Attendance: 15,132 at ANZ Stadium
Fri NRL - Knights v Wests Tigers Attendance: 18,561 at McDonald Jones Stadium

Yeah forgot to add that when posting. Have been lucky to just scrape past the Tiger Cats game

Swans average FTA audience in Sydney this year is 45,000.
Swans best FTA audience this year was 63,000 v West Coast on a Friday night in Round 13.

Swans average Fox audience in Sydney in 2017 was 37,000 (with a peak of 55,000) - allowing for the overall 10% drop in league ratings on Fox this year, we could estimate 33,000 per game for the Swans.

Estimate a total audience across metro Fox and FTA of between 75 and 80k. Just under a third of the metro FTA NRL audience for games in Sydney, without even getting to the Fox ratings.

They don’t care about crowds as much as we do. They focus more on TV ratings.. Always have. Sure they would marvel at our crowds with envy, but it’s not the undisputed priority indicator of game health it is in the AFL.

As an extreme example a bit more along these lines.. World cricket. Crowds are largely embarrassing but the game is driven by the TV revenue largely out of India.

Different economies and business models to an extent.

I don't get into comparison with the NRL but 6000 for the Bulldogs is startling. That is down at basketball levels.

Official crowd: 20,748 at Etihad Stadium Now theres a shocker for two Melbourne teams!

I was there and I doubt it was even that.

I posted in the game day thread.

Top tier maybe 25% of capacity.

Middle tier maybe 30% of capacity.

Level 1, maybe 80% of capacity, including people standing at the back.

I'm being generous with those estimates too.

I was sitting right on the wing, aisle 13, looking across from me, the top tier had 9 bays directly in front of me on the opposite side of the ground that were 50 - 60% full at most, I'm assuming it was the same directly above me, I didn't bother looking. Outside of those bays directly on the wings, the other 30 odd bays were only around 10% full. I would have had no trouble counting individuals in all them.

I've been there with 50k and it was well below half full tonight. Outside of games I went to in Canberra 20 odd years ago, the atmosphere tonight was the worst I've ever been in the midst of at a VFL / AFL game. The most noise at the ground was from Dog's fans and even then we had to wait almost until half time for them to pipe up.

Well given the other 5 games were played in front of an average of over 50k and an aggregate margin of 15 points, you appear to have fell into a barrel of clitorises and came out sucking your lip

My wife won 4 tickets so her, myself and the two kids went. None of them had been to Etihad before so it was good for them to see it. None of them are huge footy fans but my wife and one daughter barrack for the dogs and my other daughter and myself are Cats.

Thursday Night game at ANZ, team at the bottom end of the ladder that was expected to push for a Premiership, has just had to release a handful of its star players to other teams because of salary cap concerns moving forward into the next 3 seasons and its board is at war. Its understandable in the context the finds itself in.

Im not sure where you were coming from but my whole 40 min drive it rained throughout. Only about 15 mins before the game it was subsiding. Like i said people decide especially with families hours and hours before.

I'm not really sure what your issue is.

I've said there was light showers as I was walking from the train station and by game time it had stopped. A light shower just after halftime and that was it. I've acknowledged it was cold (not nearly as it was up in Wallan yesterday) I'm not questioning the crowd number or why people wouldn't go. As I said in my original post, it turned out to be a beautiful night for footy.

I accept each point you make but even in all the circumstances you point to the fact that one of the traditional League heavyweights in Sydney can draw 6,000 against the biggest club in the sport is shocking. I am not League bashing. I'm just shocked that any Sydney Big 4 V Brisbane game can go so low. What if it hadn't been the Broncos? 5,000 4,000?

Agree the ratings need to improve in Sydney.

Swans got 54k, the NRL 135k, on FTA in Sydney. So the NRL basically got 2.5 times the swans figure. Fox numbers aren't out yet but we probably won't get to see the city breakdown.

The comparison doesn't look so bad if attendances are added in (93k/144k).

Think the NRL will struggle consistently to get 200k FTA in Sydney on a Saturday Night simply because it is a low ratings night, but 135k seems unders for them (maybe due to this game being the first FTA game for the season on a Saturday night).

I get the impression that AFL is very slowly making ground on NRL in Sydney. Wouldn't be surprised if the ratio of regional to metro NRL ratings continues to rise slowly over time due to an aging demographic and some migration of retirees to coastal areas.
