FB: Ambrose, Hartley, Gleeson
HB: Saad, Hurley, McKenna
C: McGrath, Merrett, Zaharakis
HF: Stringer, Daniher, Fantasia
FF: Smith, Hooker, McDonald-Tipungwuti
R: Bellchambers, Heppell, Parish
IC: Langford, Myers, Begley, Goddard

There are plenty of things to think about:
  • Can we really play all of Daniher, Hooker, Stewart and Stringer in a single forward-line?
  • If not who misses or plays another role? Hooker could easily go back - assuming fitness - but he plays a unique role as a stay-at-home forward who creates a contest. Does Stewart miss? Which would be a shame given his improvement throughout 2017.
  • If Hooker was to go back do we play him alongside Hartley / Ambrose and Hurley or does he replace Hartley / Ambrose? Do we want three tall defenders or just two or do we make a decision depending on opponent personnel?
  • I'd like to see McGrath used, on occasion, in a tagging capacity. I want him to run with some of the best midfielders so that he gets a feel for how they go about it. I also don't think it would do any harm to utilise his defensive instincts against some of the opposition's better midfielders.
  • I see Fantasia spending a lot more time running through the middle. He will become a more regular part of the midfield rotation.
  • The midfield still needs a lot of work to become a top-4 side. A lot will depend on the progress of Langford and the improvement in youngsters such as McGrath and Parish. Can Myers regain his old form now that he has a solid season behind him? And if not is there anyone waiting in the wings to steal his spot (perhaps Laverde)?

It's your team of course, but personally can't see any way on earth Stewart misses.

Stringer Hooker Stewart
Bellchambers Zaharakis Heppell

Langford to replace Myers (hopefully) by seasons end.

B: Francis - Hartley - Saad

F: Fantasia - Hooker - Stewart
I/C: Goddard - Parish - Langford - Laverde

Lloyds side best I've seen so far. Without opening up the hooker debate I prefer him back.

Midfield has plenty of depth but need more consistency from heppell which would give us 2 genuine A graders with 4 or 5 solid B to B+ in support. Great age profile, scary forward line solid back line that can defend hard and create goal scoring opportunity.

Still plenty of good youth not in that side.

Ultimately it's the best side we've had for about 15 years

Not much I can argue about this team although a feel a fully fit Laverde plays ahead of Begley.

Lloyd's forward line is weird for a former champion full forward.

It's only one structural change (i.e. Stringer for Hooker) but largely undoes so much of what worked so well this year. There is nothing to suggest that we had a problem with the ball bouncing out of forward 50. It went in and we scored. Our problem was getting the ball inside 50 enough to set the rest of the ground up stop opponents.

best 22 for me:
B: Ambrose - Hooker - M.Baguley
HB: Saad - Hurley - McKenna
C: McGrath - Goddard - Zaharakis
R: Bellchambers - Heppell - Z.Merrett
HF: Smith - Daniher - Walla
F: Fantasia - Stewart - J. Begley
I/C: Coyler - Parish - Langford - Laverde

EMG: Gleeson - Mutch - Myers

also Francis, Hartley, Green, Luenburger and Dea can come in and do a role.

Brown is also back up and possibly Draper might get a game or 2 next year.

i still feel Gleeson and McKenna are liabilities to the team and get shown up against other sides. they both did improve but hopefully they can be rotated out of the side.

hopefully Myers and Coyler have better years as well Coyler makes a lot of errors but play him in the forward line and put Fantasia on ball may solve that a bit.

also probably Goddard's last year so need to find someone to come and and play his role. hopefully Kobe comes in and plays the game.

Both Larverde and Langford need to step up as they were both horrid this year but maybe they both come back fit in the off season and will help them.

Gleeson was our best player against Sydney in the final. Stood up on the big stage. Will be one of our best players over the next few years.

Post-trade period team...and i can't see our drafting changing any of this

Gleeson Hartley Francis
Saad Hurley McKenna
Parish Merrett McGrath
Stringer Daniher Tippa
Fantasia Hooker Stewart
TBC Heppell Smith
Zaka Goddard Langford Laverde

I hope you are right and if he gets a full pre-season I'm sure you will be. But I'm just not ready to assume that Laverde will have a full pre-season.

At least two of Langford, Laverde and Begley coming to the party in the midfield is going to have a big impact on how we go next year.

You could argue that the team's improvement next season will depend a lot on whether Langford can step into Jobe's spot next season and become part of the midfield rotation.

Absolutely. Langford is probably primed, given he's entering his fourth year and he hasn't had the injury issues Laverde has. It's hard to expect too much of Begley in just his second season.

I think Saad definitely addressed an actual need, and Stringer/Smith are both good pickups, but as far as building on our biggest weakness (imo, stoppages)
they probably won't be the guys.

A fit Stringer would make a huge difference at stoppages.

I can't see Hooker, Daniher, Stewart and Stringer all playing in the same forward line. Too tall surely.

Either Hooker goes back or Stewart is out.
Stringer in for Green.
And we don't change much else from what we were running through most the season.

I would expect both Daniher and Stringer will get up the field a bit too.
And the likes of Parish, McGrath, McKenna, Smith, Heppell will push forward with the run and carry game.

Post Trade Period Best 22:
Gleeson Hurley Ambrose
Saad Hooker McKenna
Parish Merrett Zaka
Stringer Daniher Tippa
Fantasia Stewart Begley
TBC Heppell Smith
McGrath Goddard Langford Laverde

Hooker down back: He's a good forward but we have enough firepower in the forward line without him and he is the best suited player to take the gorilla's of the comp. Plus having him and Gleeson back there taking intercept marks will make it a lot easier on the rest of the defense to rebound. I picture this backline working like this: Ambrose to get the #1 or #2 forward - basically whoever is smaller and more hard leading, Hooker to get the biggest forward and Hurley to get whoever else is left and rebound. I believe Saad can play on the best small forwards and Worsfold suggested he could.

The forward line is very mobile and while I am robbing it of a bit of contested marking power - everyone but Tippa is still a threat in the air. In addition we have Smith, Langford and Laverde who can all rotate through there.

The midfield looks pretty good in terms of depth. We have a lot of options that will spend time between the forward line and midfield which will really help us because not many of our players have elite endurance.

Its a very quick team and we now have a good amount of good kicks on each line that can distribute the ball effectively. We also have a lot of multi positional players that can play different roles. Its a young team but if everyone played 22 games - I think only Begley and McGrath wouldn't reach 50 games so there is some good experience there as well.

Our bottom 6 in any particular game:

- Langford
- Laverde/Begley
- Myers/Howett/Bird
- Colyer/Green
- Baguley/Gleeson
- Ambrose/Hartley

Look at that mother****ing depth.

The team I'd like to see due to players on our list reaching their potential by mid year;

Gleeson Hooker Ambrose/Baguley
McKenna Hurley Saad
Zaharakis Stringer McGrath
Smith J Daniher Fantasia
Tippa Francis Stewart
TBC Heppell Z Merrett

Goddard Langford Laverde Parish
Colyer Myers Leuenberger

Goddard as a utility sits on my bench but I'd like to see him take on more back half responsibility with Kelly gone. He swaps with McKenna or Saad depending on how much run we need.

Ambrose and Bags are lock down players and depend on the forward height of the opposition.

I'm hoping Myers returns to his best as another big body will be needed a lot next year.

As much as I hope Begley reaches his potential by midyear I doubt it will happen that soon. He's in the frame.

Colyer at his best is right in the mix and frankly I love the idea of how electrifying our team could be with him in there with our other smalls.

Laverde and Langford are there with the expectation that they will fill a midfield rotation role.

I'm actually really struggling on picking a best 22 atm. I really need to see what roles Woosha and co have each player in before I think I'd have anything accurate. Rather than assume what roles they'll play.
