Mundy as our FF and Cox as our part-time ruck has me pretty uncomfortable. I would be trying for some other permutation, but it isn't easy.

B:Wilson Hamling Logue
HB: Hughes, A.Pearce Ryan
C: S. Hill Neale B.Hill
R: Sandilands Blakely Fyfe
HF: McCarthy Cox Matera
FF: Ballas Taberner Walters

i/c Langdon, Brayshaw, Mundy , Tucker

Happy to go small think our best form last year was when we played 2 tall forwards with kersten and mccarthy. Anyone remember if A. Pearce did any rucking pre-injury and if he was any good - wouldn't mind seeing him forward/ruck i seem to remember them saying he could possibly play wing when they drafted him

I think it was pretty clear last year that Cox is our best option as the forward/ruck role, especially if he improves on last year, which you'd expect him to.

AP would be risky in the ruck imo. Too much stress on his leg.

Why do most of you not have Cerra in? Now back in full training and ready for JLT.

I think he should have gone #1 if fit for 2017, and is a better more rounded player than Brayshaw.

Maybe eased into the year via WAFL?

Copped a knock in the intra club and had a slow start to preseason due to the shoulder. But he is apparantly right to go for JLT. Hopefully he shows enough to push for a round 1 spot.

This isn’t my best 22 - it’s a round one prediction assuming we get no more injuries - which of course won’t happen but there’s no way I can predict who’ll it’ll be.

Spurr Hamling Logue
Wilson Johnson Ryan
Hill Blakely Hill
McCarthy Cox Walters
Ballantyne Kersten Matera
Sandilands Fyfe Neale
Mundy Tucker Hughes Brayshaw

Darcy, A.Pearce and Bennell will be treated cautiously and will start at Peel. Darcy will play with Sandilands a bit later on - won’t help us win games but will be great for his development which is more important imo. Pearce and Logue will be rotated along with the occasional Johnson rest. Bennell walks into this side on talent but will be interesting to see whether he’s able to do it for various reasons.

Langdon, Cerra and Grey will play a fair bit but I couldn’t squeeze them in. I’d have Taberner ahead of Kersten personally but I just don’t think that’s how the match committee see it unless something has change drastically from last year.

These 29 players (maybe minus Bennell unfortunately) and as much as I hate to admit it Sheridan and Sutcliffe will be the ones we see most of this year but they’ll 4-5 debuts (including the two above) as well as having another look at guys like Nyhuis and Apeness at certain stages.

I would be fine with this for round one, especially given it is against PA, who have bigged up for a premiership push.
  • All of Ballantyne, Spurr and Johnson can be phased out as the year progresses and if others push their case. Langdon, Cerra and A Pearce in waiting (Hughes replacing Spurr in the back-line, Cerra to the bench), with little drop off in terms of productivity.
  • Kersten versus Taberner is an interesting debate, and despite their obvious differences I also see it as an either/or for them. I don't have a black-line through Apeness, and late in the year I am hoping we see a debut from Dixon.
  • I hope to see a Darcy/Meek combo sometime this season, preferably for a run of 3+ games.

Matera Dixon Taberner
Bennell Cox Walters
B Hill Fyfe Langdon
Logue A.Pearce Wilson
Ryan Hamling Spurr

Ruck - Sandilands Fyfe Neale
Interchange - Brayshaw, Cerra, Blakely, Darcy

Hmmm. No McCarthy or S Hill is a bit radical. But I do like the idea of two Fyfe’s.

That team will be close to the first round lineup . Are you Ross Lyon?

For me, I want Cerra and Langdon in and Ballantyne and Spurr out.

I want Cerra or Langdon in and Spurr out. I reckon Ballas will still deliver more than any of our young tyros.

Was interesting to see LDU deliver a pretty non-descript performance yesterday. Can’t wait to see what Brayshaw can show us today. It’s extremely difficult for 19 yo’s to play at the required level from the get go. They develop just as well in the WAFL.

I am so glad to hear someone else say that. I look at players like Barlow and Ryan who have developed well in the VFL and I look at the young bodies of 18-19 year olds and I think let's not ask something of them that puts them at risk.

I actually think Ballantyne has a lot to offer us this year. Maybe even next year. He looked a million bucks last pre season imo and does again. Unfortunately the hamstring injury screwed him over last year.

The issue is he still offers more than Grey. Grey has to improve a lot in certain areas to really be considered a future best 22 player. Langdon is seen as less of a small forward but I can’t see why he can’t play there.

Since I posted that team Sutcliffe has been preferred to Spurr, Taberner to Kersten and Tucker has been named at half back. I guess we have to see what we are like without Spurr as A. He’s old and B. He’s only really an average role player that could be holding us back. If Tucker and Blakely play significant minutes half back Spurr could be left out. I don’t really rate Kersten at all tbh but I reckon the match committee do. Personally I’d only give him games if McCarthy is unavailable or significantly out of touch. I’d rather give Taberner or Apeness every chance.

For me, it’s about the future.

Ballantyne can still play and have an impact. My question how long he can keep playing?

If he can play another 3 years, then play him but if it’s less then I rather get games into Cerra.

Grey for me isnt talented enough and doesn’t have a bag of tricks for a small forward.

Ballatyne will deliver more but for me it’s playing the best 22 in 2020 now with maybe Sandilands and Mundy in for leadership and being competitive.

The older guys need to play at a high level to get a game.

The older players we have ready to go replacements for are at risk of losing their positions. That is just the way it is.

Sandilands is easily our best ruck, and his replacements are still in development.

Spurr is fringe best 22 and his replacements are ready to step up.

MJ is a legend, but if A Pearce is ready to play and Logue is doing well, is not a certain starter.

Ballantyne has a lot of competition emerging for his position, and will need to be fit and firing.

Mundy is still doing well, is an outstanding mentor and very flexible. No clear replacements, but needs to perform.

D Pearce is superseded.

I think if ballas is in the team Lyon needs to have him doing more than just putting on pressure.

Our talls aren't good enough to kick big scores, so the smalls need to hit the scoreboard.

You can see the plan with kerstan and McCarthy is to have them run their opposition into the ground because they don't have the height or prowess to be dominant in the air. Not sure how well that will work in the wet.

I can't see grey being a part of the best 22 permanently because his kicking is a big liability, as fantastic as his aggression is.

Crowden may be a better option, his pace, agility and vertical leap at the state combine were very good.

Obviously the more kids they play though, the more often the team will run out of puff in games.

Cometh the hour, cometh the Ballantyneth!!!

Reasons for improvement;
1) make or break year for contract extension
2) Pilates has hopefully got his body right and will be durable
3) his first full preseason for years
4) won’t be used to rotate through midfield much
5) will get his angry back with confidence in his body and performance

Reasons to regress (further)
1) he’s a spud who’s old and on the decline
2) his body won’t hold up
3) he falls over too much
4) will be pushed through midfield and up ground too much, negating his biggest strength of crumbing goals
5) giro/swita/Bennell waiting in the wings

Prediction: 30+ goals from 18+ games. One year contract extension. Could still be around when we challenge in 2020.

Disclaimer: one-eyed biased buddy opinion

That sent shivers up my spine!

A seriously scary proposition for supporters!!!

We can all agree that these SHOULD NOT be in 22 this season:
D. Pearce
Suttclife
Sheridan

Questionable :
MJ
Spurr
Ballas

How much are we willing to give chances to the same older '"experienced" players to win games yet have limitations. Rather give youngsters a chance with a strong midfield core.

best 22 with all new and improved Banfield (yes, i do make rash decisions after 1 pre season game....and still have faith in bennell. )
Logue hamling hughes
wilson pearce ryan
hill blackley hill
banfied taberner Bennell
mccarthy cox matera

Ruck Darcy Fyfe Neale.

Int: Brayshaw, Cerra, Crowden, Mundy.

Let's back in the youth. No space for ballas, Jonno, Sherro, Sutto and Danyle.
