They were all recruited by Clayton with an eye to develop into mids (or so we were told) - Powell, Ah Chee, Martin, Garlett, Lonergan, Weller, Lemmens, Wigg, Allen, Boston, Glenn, Gillbee, Russell, Toy, Wilkinson, Shaw, Hunt, Matera.... have I missed anyone.
Brodie, Ainsworth, Scrimshaw, Bowes, Scheer! Benny is turning into a great little mid and we know can score goals too. Scheer was thrown into centre bounces on the weekend and we started winning centre clearances. Bowes has had some very good games playing out of defence and through the midfield. Brodie is the next man up at inside mid and Scrimshaw played on the ball on the weekend picking up 25 touches against a decent opposition midfield. Add Dawson to that list because he's going to be playing AFL very soon and you'll find that Clayton's efforts at rebuilding from the draft picks he got for Dixon, Prestia, Bennell, O'Meara, Ablett etc will actually stack up very well indeed.

Bowes and Scheer are Both academy players if Clayton don't draft them he should be out of the door sooner . As for other lets see they stay on or be like o Meara , Ablett . I think Scheer will become a good player with more AfL game under his belt.

Boston was becoming a good player for us and since proved in the neafl how good he is.. it’s a shame he left before we could see what he could’ve been

Geez I hope so because it hasn’t made for pretty reading so far.

Can't forget the player development problems we had.
If some of these players had gone to Sydney for example, would they have become AFL quality footballers?

If you have a bad cook, hard to really know if the quality of the groceries is any good. Some ingredients will shine whoever the cook is, but some absolutely need a decent cook to bring out the flavour. Some also need constant scrutiny and the fear of under-performing in front of large crowds.

We had very poor facilities, year after year year.
Fewer coaches and support staff than anyone else, year after year after year (lowest football department spend of all clubs for multiple years).
What seems like poor leadership off field, year after year after year.

It is too easy to think that the draft will even things out. But as the NBA shows year after year, it is easy for poor teams to stay poor no matter the draft picks they get. And for a one year surge to be followed by a return to rubbish.

Poor teams stay poor b/c, well, they are poor teams.

It is hard to fight out of mediocrity and to become a good team consistently. Got to get a lot of things right, not just picking players with potential. Tbh, I think we are slowly starting to get a few things right. But nothing will be easy.

Good read Stroppy, and I now know what I'm doing wrong in the kitchen!
It's a really interesting topic. A mate of mine who supports Collingwood sent me a text one night after Henry Schade kept Buddy goalless. Best thing since toilet paper etc etc. A year later Henry is playing local footy.
I'm struggling to find examples of players that have left us, and who became better footballers elsewhere.
Z Smith, Prestia, Dixon, Weller, Saad, Gorringe, Shaw, Garlett the list goes on.
A heap of players we drafted and eventually off loaded weren't picked up elsewhere.
Player development definitely contributed no doubt to some extent.

Was Powell recruited as a small forward or to develop into a mid? Averaging only 4 possessions a game in the last 3 but seems to kick 1-2 each week.
His possessions avg is a worry considering it’s NEAFL and I know he’s young but I don’t see anything that screams star.

I’d suggest we have e been very good at cooking players over the years, Bluey should be on MasterChef

Agreed - anyone trying to compare to Fyfe is forgetting that fyfe averaged 16 disposals and almost a goal at AFL level at the same age

Fyfe is an odd comparison. Will Hayward is the player that comes to mind who we were also keen on.
Why an odd comparison? Fyfe was drafted as a skinny mid sized forward who wasn't a fantastic ball winner or contested player but who had the X factor about him and was able to usually make something happen around goals.
Powell is in the same boat, has a long way to go.
Fyfe just grew a few more cms in his first year at freo and then just exploded into a player

Miles absolutely murdered north on the weekend someone will definitely take him at the end of the year
42 poss 2 goals and 10 tackles going by a vfl report on another site, Sam Lloyd had 24 poss and 1 goal in the Afl game also
these 2 guys would have been so good for you guys this year and they would have loved playing up there.

If he cares about getting a game he would consider the Suns - our midfield is poo and with at least 2 of Rischa, Barlow and Rosa on the way out and Hall most likely to go there will be ample opportunities for a player of his caliber to walk into the midfield - even if he is somewhat similar to Touk and Brodie, he is a known quantity and can cut it at the level.

If Lynch leaves and we didn't match, the Tigers should be throwing back a couple of their decent off-cuts as a thank you present.
Richmond said last trade period that even though we love these 2 players and would ideally love to keep them we understand that they are AFL players and looking for more game time and if an opportunity with another club comes their way we would facilitate a trade to get them there (lloyd & miles)

picks in the 40's or 50's would have got them there

Miles for something in the 50’s....listen here buddy: Give us Miles for our first round pick and you have yourself a deal.

A lot of us on the Richmond board actually want miles to go to another club and make a career out of his chance, He is way too good a player to be wasted in the VFL racking up 40 touches but not getting a look in.

Prestia,Caddy,Graham have taken his spot due to our game plan with Cotchin and Martin in there he has been squeezed out
Would love to see him kill it for you blokes all the best to him and great club man that will really be good for you guys culturally also

That second paragraph wreaks of new found success “condescension”.
You were going well for a while there.

I think GC can get them for Free , you need to free up space for new drafee , those 40 and 50 pick are very handy for GC academy players where there is no go home factor. I will not be surprised there will be 10 new players coming in .
Pre season draft will be perfect for these two . When did their contract End .

been interesting to watch many howl down the possibility of Ellis and Horlin Smith possibly be traded in to us a couple of years ago and lately the mood shifted to players like them being good choices along with the two Richmond players above, not exactly sure what my point is other than opinions and players evolve from being a "hell no" to being a potentially wanted trade
I would be interested to know if guys like Lyons and Young who move because they cannot get a consistent run are happy now they are getting weekly games even though not in a winning side because if they are I think our fabric will be made up of more mature guys like that we trade in (rather than Malceski, Barlow, Rosa types who are close to being cooked) blending with the Academy boys and the likes of Bowes, Scheer, Brodie, Ainsworth etc

LOL this bloke doesnt even want to give up a pick in the 50's - You guys are so hard to trade with

Why need a trade , wait for club to delist their players if they need to , if their contract end this year and Lynch going throw a bit of money to them surely their won't signed contract extension with their current club playing VFL, but I am happy for them if they stay loyal thought.

If Lynch leaves we will have 6 picks in the top 40 odd and only looking to draft at most 6 players, and that's before we get anything back for Hall and whoever else.

We can throw the Tigers a bone, they clearly are in need.

I'd still be very meh oh both of those tbh. I actually think we have the cattle to he right up there, we just need to improve and get better, some players need to develop faster. But miles at 26 isn't offering anything that touk at 22 can't. He's one dimensional, and not elite at what he does at all. It all reminds me of Hallahan

In the event of either Ah chee and or Martin requesting a trade back to WA what would the Suns want in return either this year or next.

Understand both come out of contract in 2019.

A first rounder for Martin and a second for Ah chee?
