What about Tradebait from our list? Guys who are ready to be moved along but we want to get to get some value out of them.

I wonder if Lemmens can cement his place in the Senior side this year given his preseason showed that he belonged there. He is from Port Adelaide and you wonder whether the win-now Power value him enough to want back. He could make an interesting package trade.

Jesse Lonergan is a player I rate highly, but the reality is that he is down the order and ripe for trading. Do North Melbourne or Hawthorn want a mid-career Tasmanian? Maybe we can pry Brayden Preuss away from Norf so we can have Triple Braydens on our list.

Tommy Nicholls won't last much longer on the Gold Coast, despite his contract extension. Plenty of Clubs will be interested in him, especially if he gets some senior game time later in the season.

Aaron Hall is another Tasmanian who you'd reckon would be in the sights of several other clubs should he decide he wants to test the tradewinds.

Lemmens I'd keep. He will add another layer to this forward pressure game we base off. Looks bulked up and I liked what I saw in the preseason. He just tries unbelievably hard and almost no one cracks in as hard as him at our club.

Lonergan I'm worried about. He'd really want to be finding a place this year or he's trade bait. As you mentioned I think North could be a good destination for him if he can't find his way in regularly.

I'm happy to keep Tommy Nicholls as long as he's willing to battle it out with Witts for that ruck spot. He has a ton of talent and I could see in the games he did play preseason and NEAFL that he is trying his arse off now. We really do need that ruck depth as we wouldn't handle a situation like Sydney's as well because we don't have a star midfield

I don't need Hally to prove anything to me about how damaging he can be as a footballer but I do need to see him showing us that he is willing to be a cog in our team defence structure. I'd give up 5-10 of his possessions to see him cracking in hard cos he is a weapon when he does. I was glad to see in his latest interview on the Suns site he joked about how good it is to have a baby girl and his wife to give him perspective when he has a bad day or a bad game then referred to last week's game. He always struck me as a sensitive type who wouldnt enjoy talking about something like that and I feel like that reflects in his ability to be coached but if he is willing to brush himself off and keep going from a game like last week I have plenty of time for him. I know it's a small thing to observe but just my thoughts.

Yeah, I don't want to see any of them go to be honest, but if any of them fails in Dew new system I'd rather we get something for them in a trade than have to delist them. You'd expect that the 5 likeliest delistings would be Willis, Barlow, Rischitelli, Rosa and maybe Hanley, so that leaves 6 spots to be filled before trades come into it. It doesn't bear thinking about a few of our players who might decide to move on because you'd hope that they stay, but outside of Lynch all the others have to be party to trade negotiations.

I'd hope that Barlow and Hanley are retained (hopefully Barlow is valued by Dew). We really need to look at some mature stop gaps. The balance of age and experience isn't dire at the moment but unfortunately the majority of wise heads are having the game go past them which is concerning. We do not want to be the most inexperienced and youngest side at the state of 2018.

We will have to cut bait with one or both if they don't perform. The 2016 Trade period was amazing because it brought in 4 guys ready to play straight away and 4 insanely talented players who would have the chance to mature before the 4 oldest guys on the list became surplus to requirements. It is a long time until Trade week, but you'd imagine that if we are going to move on 5 to 7 players the plan would be to bring in some mature talent. Barlow could probably play another 5 seasons for Southport in the NEAFL, but if he's not back to the form he displayed this time last year then it's pink roses. Hanley is a different fish because when he fires there is no doubt he's in our best 22, but last week he showed why he's a liability because when he gets injured during a game it usually means we lose.
The thing is the Suns have huge Draft capital with 2 picks in each of the 4 rounds and that number dramatically increase if one or more stars want to leave. Instead of rebuilding again the onus is on the new list management group to reload for 2019, bring in some incredible talent to develop, but also hit the trade market and find ready-made gems. Mav Weller will probably be available in the Rookie Draft and Josh Thomas is due for a new contract at Collingwood, to name 2 blokes who would be interested.
The other thing to remember is that our originals will next year be veterans of 100 to 150 games so the need to stock the list with journeymen is diminishing. But I like your optimism because if Hanley and Barlow can play through another season, not to mention Harbrow keeps his current form, then the side will become a cracking unit with 30+ players ready to go and the developing players can have their time to show their readiness after 20 or 30 NEAFL games to harden them up.

That juicy Eagle’s first rounder that was meant to nab us a top ten pick is looking closer to a second rounder ATM :(

Especially since they have our 2nd rounder as part of the same deal.
Might be 4 2nd rounders for a 10 spot upgrade.

Doom. Gloom.
....then they lose a couple of games in a row, and we win one.

Following this club is much like life in general. Mostly hard toil interspersed with a few moments of joy and a glimmer of hope.

The Weller trade just keeps on giving
That is a stretch. The Suns took a calculated risk knowing that the outcome could be anything from Top 5 to bottom of the first round. The Dockers didn't want that risk, which was part of the gamble the Suns were happy to roll with. The Eagles have played 3 games at home and still managed to lose 1 of them while defeating the Dogs and Blues in Melbourne is hardly a good form guide. If they are still on top of the ladder after 10 matches, with the Dockers at home, Port at home, Giants in Sydney, Tigers at home, then Hawks in Melbourne, they are genuine contenders. They have a tough enough Schedule that 10 wins is as likely a scenario as them getting 13 wins and playing finals. They are too proud to go down without a fight, but wait for the injuries to pile up and they will have to play rookies because they have no depth.

At pick 6 who would we get, and I feel we need an outside runner that is not Aaron Hall

After seeing what Tim Kelly has done to Geelongs midfield as a mature aged player picked in the second round last year.

I would of taken him over Weller last year for pick 2!!

As for this years draft Maybe bailey smith Or ben king at our first pick.

I think its time we moved Leslie on in the trade period

King can play back or forward

Nah Kelly just got twins recently , homesickness a big issue for a club like GC. No point become a feeder club to WA or Victoria .

Leslie is the replacement for Thompson. Thompson is already 27, players start retiring from 29ish (he may go on to 33 but you have to plan for worst case)
I wouldn't want to be having our next up key defender be an 18yo draftee, KPP take longer to develop.

Leslie is prob 24 by now.. lol
Plenty of KPP in the state leagues if desperate aka tom
Stewart at geelong. Pushing for AA this year

I don't know anything about the inner workings at the Suns but if Leslie doesn't get an opportunity this year he would be wise to look for opportunities elsewhere to make a name for himself.

All the KP players except for 2MP are either foundation players or from the 2010 draft class so they probably have 3-4 years left of prime years (27-30/31) before they decline so I am not opposed to drafting a KP player if they are the best available.

My thoughts were that in the worst case scenario if Lynch left and we had picks say 5 and 6 (FA compo) and Max King fell to us at 5 (say because he just did his ACL) and was best available I would take him and grab his twin brother Ben with the next pick. That gives them 3 years to develop properly behind 2MP, Day, Rory and May before becoming the spine of the next decade, and I would think the go-home factor is reduced to nil (unless they can't stand each other) as they would know this is their only opportunity to play together in the same team for their careers.
