I was having an interesting conversation with a work colleague before.

He's a diehard Port supporter who went to China last year. He was telling me today that while he isn't going this year, he still went to the information session about the China game and from what he was told it seems as though the interest/sales for the game have been markedly lower this year in terms of member interest in the game.

It will be interesting to see what the crowd is like this year, unless they resort to giving away tickets to Chinese nationals then I would expect the crowd to be lower this year than last year.
No great surprise. It doesn't have the same novelty factor second time around. Traveling to China is not cheap, particularly when you consider the demographic of most Port supporters.

Question - does the lack of interest result in an increase or decrease in the SA crime rate? Fewer criminals leaving = higher. Criminals not needing to raise funds for an overseas holiday = lower.

Haven't they also got in bed with Phil Hoffman travel this year so the only way you can buy tickets to the game is to go with one of their packages?

You can buy individual tickets, I think they were $20 AUD.

If it was us, I'd probably go the first time too, but no way I'd book in for another shorter than a week holiday package to the same place a year later where you are probably bussed off to the game against the same low rating club, from your below average hotel, see the same tourist attraction and a pressured into shopping at a dozen tourist shops.

I was pretty close to heading to Dubai to watch us play in that pre-season game all those years back, but can't imagine I'd want to do it year in year out.

I know a handful of people who went last year, said they had a great time. Don't think any particularly had the appetite to do it twice though. Obviously financially/logistically it's a fair bit more difficult than an annual trip to the MCG or Gold Coast to watch an away game.

You would assume the modelling their working off is not to rely on a large contingent of South Australian fans flying over to watch the game.

The Powah supporters that went last year would have gone to the footy & Shanghai Disneyland for their cultural experience and McDonalds for their gastronomic adventure - so its back to Bali this year.

Are there actually statistics for club supporter demographics or is this just the standard 'Port fans are poor hur hur hur Centrelink' fare?

Depends.

If it's crimes involving theft, a lack of interest means they stay the same or less (less punters stealing for $$$ for airfares; not tickets, they're usually free)

If it's crimes involving alleged sexual assault by players, a lack of interest means it stays the same or higher (SPP stays in Adelaide, goes to Mr Kim's instead of going to China... and going to Mr Kim's)

Mostly the latter. They, like Collingwood, seem to have an unnaturally low tooth to tatt ratio.

I'm running at 10.67:1

;)

If we had any real AFL journos at all, it would be a simple question for them to ask:

“Great crowd of 10K Keith ... how many of those were freebies!?”

Could ask that at any Port game.

What is the hold up in the SPP case?

Are the AFL trying to sugarcoat its "boys will be boys" verdict and delicately word their press release without directly calling the alleged victim a liar?

Personally, I think the longer it goes the more trouble it could be for SPP.

No you can buy them directly from the website

https://jusstickets.com/en/18191-australian-football-league/

The small reserve seating sections are "sold out" behind the goals (the reason why is says "sold out" is because they're exclusive to travel agents, but are still available), but there's plenty of $20 tickets available along both wings

My mate at work that went last year said that the whole crowd was essentially either Port supporters from Adelaide/Australia or expat Aussies living over in the China and there appeared to be close to zero Chinese nationals at the game.

I would hazard to guess that once again there will be little to no Chinese interest in the game so if they hope to be generating local (Chinese) interest to fill the stadium then I expect it will fail.

You'd think there would be enough expats to get a decent crowd though?

Those games at the Oval back in the day were always well attended.

How many people would pay to attend a Handball match between two European Handball clubs if it was held in Adelaide.

That is what Aussie Rules is to the Chinese.

If you think about it.

SA has the worst unemployment, has the lowest average wages, some of the worst education results and by any measure limited career opportunities.

So by definition SA fans are likely worse off than most in the country.

The question is, do we have more of the 'better off' fans which would mean Port have more of the 'worse off' fans to suit the stereotype? ( I'm going with yes btw, only going on feedback from local bars and restaurants that the post match spend from Crowsmatched is higher than Port matches)
