Thanks Clem and sherrif again. Today’s training reports make for good reading after the HB shit storm.

I probably shouldn’t be surprised but the players vying for the small/pressure forward spots seem to be training at a bloody high standard the whole preseason, those being Grey, Matera, Ballas and Crowden.

Also fantastic to hear Sandi and Mundy looking in ripping shape.

To be fair anybody who wrote Logue off last year is a pretty poor judge of talent.

He's raw as hell, there's no denying that.

Was he ready to play? Physically, sure. But he definetly lacked that little bit of footy knowledge. Might take him a season or two more to put it all together but I have no doubt he'll get there.
He's a surprisingly good kick. One game Fyfe used him in the middle and I could feel his confidence lift, his kick was great.
Now that he's not a new kid anymore I hope that we'll see some real growth in him this year.

Thanks for the awesome training reports.
Soo from what im hearing Crowden is an out and out gun, but we should keep it on the down low so when we do unveil him in round one, and he plays the best game for a debutant in the history of the AFL it will still be a suprise.

Outstanding reporting gents. I'm really excited by Logue's kicking potential among other things. He didn't really pull the trigger on long kicks last year but he seems to have a huge hoof on him. I'm in the camp that liked a lot of what I saw from him last year. Particularly his ability to win the ball in a contest, lightening reflexes.
Once Logue is confident with his decision making and backs himself in the contest he is going to be a gun

I went down yesterday but I haven’t seen a training for about 4-5 yrs so this might be a bit rusty and I can’t pick most of the new guys but...

I agree with what the other posters have already mentioned that Logue was really good, doing everything along with Matera who also did some good things up the ground in the sims which was good to see.

Fyfe was also good but didn’t complete all the sims and started laps. I thought Walters was really good throughout the day as well. Skills seemed good in the kicking drills but deteriorated a fair bit for the sims. Brayshaw does seem quite small in person but was smashing out the laps and looked super fit for a 1st yr player.

The sims were good to watch and there seems to be an emphasis on using the corridor but there is also a lot of going sideways around the hbf / centreline which I’m not the biggest fan of but good to watch some footy anyhow.

On a more general note I thought the intensity and way they moved through the drills was first class it all seemed seem less. This was the first time I’ve been to the facility and I was a little bit surprised at the size of the place. I thought we were getting 2 full sized ovals but they basically have 1 oval with a bit of extra space on the far side unless there’s another oval I missed it was def enough for what we needed but I was just expecting a lot more space than Freo oval.

Things I wasn’t so impressed with were the skills in the match sims a lot of targets were missed by foot. The goal kicking exercises are very casual no seems to be developing a solid goal kicking approach more like just have a ping and jog back past 50 and have another ping when a ball is nearby.

Overall it’s hard for me to judge whether or not this was a great session as I haven’t seen one in such a long time and you can’t really compare to what other teams are doing. I wouldn’t say we were doing anything dramatically different to the way we played over the last couple of yrs but awesome to see the guys out there and the new facilities.

The lack of structured goal kicking is pretty disappointing.

Bryce Cotton recently hit 105 out of 110 3 point shots at Wildcats training, in a drill in which you shoot from 5 set positions on the 3 point line, and only move when you miss the shot. So it is measurable, re-testable, and competitive, in full view of your team mates. In another words practising under pressure. Where is this in Freo goal kicking training?

All you suckers who jumped off Logue after one season as an 18yo are going to go down in history alongside those guys who sold their Google shares for nothing.

Buy low, sell high - that's why I took him in the buddy draft. By this time next year people will be offering me the #1 pick for him.

Logue low? Try my recent run of Griffin, Suban and Sheridan!

It is not a structured Goal kicking session; It is more like a filler between drills.
The players seem to be having casual shots at goal so as not to be standing idle.

It appears to be far from a purposeful practise session.
The players named above weren't all kicking together. Cam for his part had one last quick kick at the eastern end goals that split the middle from about 55 before jogging over to the group to start a drill.

They train all day , goal kicking etc is worked on in a one on one with a coach in the afternoon.

Mate you bought a bluechip from day 1. I've taken a leaf out of Ben Grahams book and have a long term hold on a player who was trading at a discount but has returned high dividends consistently.

Don't forget, I was Lachie's buddy back in the dark days when people would make threads about how shit he was because he missed a couple of kicks in a derby once.

Time to work my magic on another youngster being prematurely maligned.

This is sounds about right. Seems as if its just to keep them moving really.

After they did 5 minutes or so of kicking for goal the mids separated off to do 3 man tackling drills. 2 players would tackle a third, or they would have to handball between 2 while the third tackled. Then they had to sprint 50m and drop flat on the ground after about 30 seconds of this, then sprint back swap places and do it all again.

I was mainly looking for the kids and Brayshaw, Banfield, North and Crowden were the new boys to join in. Brayshaw was with the senior players and the other three were together. You can tell that some of them were struggling a bit with it compared to Mundy, Walters, Neale etc. but they still kept up and didn't look too out of place. Brayshaw and North seemed to struggle the most from memory but Brayshaw was with men (can't remember which players exactly).

Pretty much looked like it was designed to have them running right on empty as the session finished, they were all putting the work in. Walters was easily the most vocal screaming out 'engine room!' and 'get the work done'. If we didn't have Fyfe he could be captain.

I really liked what I saw from Wilson and Matera and really have to echo the thoughts above that everyone looks in great nick. In the full ground drills the only talls I noticed were Cox, Hamling, Logue and McCartney.

I was fortunate enough to bump into Clems Knee on the way out and was sad to hear I'd missed a few of you I will keep an eye out next time I go :)

Micky Barlow MkII type debut? Don't think we've had a debut like Barlow's since

Micky B's debut was magnificent! what a star he is. Did I hear he came second in the sun's 2km time trial?
On Crowden yeah that's the impression I get from all the reports, he seems to be the ultimate sleeper, the competition won't know what hit them until it's too late.

I love Micky, while I understand why he was moved on I was still pretty shattered about it.

In saying that, if he is winning your time trial then your fitness staff need a good kick in the pants.

With Logue in the sims are they using him in a defensive role? The reason i ask is i believe we will use him as a big body mid in future years
