Your sacrificing quality for quantity. 8 players in the $400k - $500k price band. 9, possibly 10 premiums. Maybe another 2 will bust out to keeper status. That leaves you with 12 Premiums and 10 upgrades to complete. You've already spent 20 trades before rd 1 starts.

Sounds good in theory to start with 14 keepers but with the lack of rookies, especially up forward, I don't see how you can avoid not having those in the 400-500 bracket

If that's what you think, Then pick 5 premiums/keepers in the fwd line and load up on rookies in the mids/backlines. If I knew which rookies were the best and which mid pricers were going to break out each year, I would of won $50k 3 times running.

All I know is that the odds of having 3 or maybe even 4 of those mid pricers actually turn into keepers is pretty remote.

The issue there is that the defender rookies are also looking a bit thin, and the best mid rookies so far look like being the premium ones like Brayshaw. At this stage it's better to have the midpricers and downgrade them to rookies if/when they appear.

Mid-pricers are a bit rich - a lot were sitting ~ top 20 for their position and are being picked on upside (team change, position change, injury history, etc). I actually think that this is the best year I've seen since playing SC to go for players in this price range. A lot of top end premiums are injured or have big red flags, rookie pool is looking suspect, and the 'mid-pricers' actually are fairly safe picks for the most part based on what they've shown.

Look at Walters for example:
- Finished 15th on FWD average in 2017
- Scored significantly higher when put in the midfield
- Appears like he will being playing midfield this year

That doesn't really read like a 'mid-pricer' to me, players like JOM, Graham, Bundy, Birchall - sure. But do you really see someone like Devon Smith doing any worse then his 80 average last year? Sure you might burn a single trade on him later on but you can wait until hes your F6 or F7 to do so.

Def & fwd rookies are shithouse atm.

Fwd rookies are somewhat ok (L.Ryan, T.McCartin, M.Guelfi, J.Garlett, B.Fritsch, Oskar Baker, J.Waterman, D.Venables, M.Poholke, L.Keefe, H.Dear, P.Ahearn, J.Higgins)

The defenders are all hope nd pray at the moment. My current place holders are Doedee, Mirra, Mihocek, Morgan.

Which of the above do you reliably expect to get games? From what we saw on the weekend maybe Fritsch, maybe Ryan. The rest in bold either weren't named, performed horribly or have zero job security. As of right now I think getting 4 good FWD rookies is going to be hard enough.

Thoughts please guys..thank you :) and good luck to you all.

Team looked fine until I saw McKernan on the bench - what is he doing there? Hoping hes just a $ placeholder and not a real selection. I'd look at getting Bundy into your forward line at his expense.

Fritsch, Venables, Poholke, Ahearn, Higgins all look increasingly likely of debuting come round 1.

if you really want McKernan in your side (is he best 22?) then start him forward and have a ruc/fwd loophole donut at R3

otherwise it looks ok. there are some selections i dont like but its just personal preference.

Thoughts lads?

Mids have been set and forget for a while now. Only thought would be Coniglio at M6 as i was burnt badly by JOM last year.
DEFs and FWDs have been fun to play around looking for value. Currently running with Burton/Hanley and Walters/Barlow/Smith/Bundy.
Might end up with an extra defender as FWD rookies look somewhat ok. Sicily and Withers are the two i am keeping an eye on. :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Ok. So there's 1.

He's just that little bit too expensive with just a little too much uncertainty over his job security. Hard to see him getting a decent run with TBC, Leuenberger & Daniher all at the front of that ruck and tall fwd queue.

The rookies always come. Every year we seem to be scrambling for them but we get them in the end.

Keep an eye on McCartin for Sydney this week. Sneaky chance I hear.

Higgins won't debut until mid-season IMO. Looking more likely that Bolton will take Rioli's spot R1, then once fit and healthy Rioli will come straight in for the most under-performing small FWD we have at the time. Higgins will most likely debut when we decide to rest one of our small FWDs.

Venables didnt look that great, Bolton ahead of Higgins, Poholke not amazing JS due to Crows depth, Ahearn being eased back apparently.

Fritsch is locked in though.

Let's hope so. The tricky part is nailing the right ones, like Hannan instead of Pickett/Eddy last yeae

I wish it was as easy as Keepers v mid range v Rookies

Last year the issue with me was putrid form of Super Premos you’d count on + injuries to keepers

Keepers assume they’re not touched .... but injuries & suspensions also play a huge part

Last you a young mid range player saved me ..... named Oliver

Gawn who was a keeper, was in & out .... then he was nurses & pushing out aweful scores

There’s no right or wrong way IMO

Fritsch will struggle for games ahead of Garlett

Those with Murphy, Kelly and Oliver from the start last year wouldve been laughing. Pricks

No young KPP .... think Aliir Aliir will get games ahead of McCartin, who I really liked as an U18 player

Agreed .....and Murphy & Oliver certainly weren't considered keepers ....they were referred to as awkwardly Priced
