I wonder if Weideman could be pried from Melbourne? Has HUGE potential IMO. I rate him and I think as a whole package he was a better prospect than Schache in their draft years IMO. Lukosius will be gone by our 1st probably.
Contracted to the end of next year, and KPF, so they will ask a lot. But worth asking the question if we take mids at the top end this year. Who would you rather chase? Patton from GWS or Weideman? Weideman probably costs us less but is very much an unknown quantity due to injuries and lack of opportunity.

Wouldn't mind having a crack at Ainsworth if he wants to be at a club with a future that seems a bit brighter. Next year's first rounder?
No way for a first, he isn't that good. Not sure he even fits a need with Taylor, Cameron, Rayner, young mids learning ...

He'll be a very good player. tbh I don't think GC would consider letting him go for our first rounder next year unless he was highly motivated to move. Would be the perfect Zorko replacement in a few years.

Well worth a crack, wasnt he keen on coming here pre draft and he was a top 5 pick wasnt he, certainly top 10. Cant remember off hand. So definately worth next yrs first round pick. I like your thinking pulp. He's playing a bit more midfield now, is quick and skillful, doesn't mind the hard stuff. Has a bit of fire in him, like zorko. Can ya have too many zorko type players, i dont think so. If lynch leaves the suns it could be an easy task talking him round. Hell, id even throw in corey lyons or mathieson as a sweetner.

Pick 4 right after McCluggage.

Wanted to come to Brisbane to play with Schache, Mathieson and Skinner, who he played with in the Under 18 champs when he was a bottom age player.

He was the second highest scorer during the 2015 U18 champs behind Schache. Was a gun. Was injured and then suspended during the first half of 2016 and came back during the U18 champs and kicked 3 goals in a quarter. Played a lot more midfield during the latter half of the tac cup season, averaging mid 30's disposals and still scoring a couple of goals per game.

I would give up our 2019 first round pick in a second if Ainsworth wanted to come. Pretty sure he signed a 2 year extension during his first preseason.

Will be interesting to see if we get anything for all the players we will turnover this year. Logic would say no - bottom 2 team cut players not a great sales pitch. I would be moving on the following:
Bell
Bewick
Walker
Claye Beams
Paparone
Dawson
Lester
Hinge
Barrett
I can't see us getting much for the above.
For the record I would offer mitch Robinson 2 year contract. I would only offer Christensen 1 year contract at near minimum salary.

Jesus. That's a decent clean out, tell us what you really think!!

I agree thats a good list to clean in what is supposed to be a strong draft so there might be gems down the list. I think the club said this week they are going to the draft this year and didn't expect to be trading high picks.

Yep - none in our best 22 and I don't think our rebuild is at "keeping depth" stage - I still think get as much talent in as possible. Also, my logic also goes to clean out of previous culture - new players come in under Fagan/Noble culture and not tainted.
I for one wonder whether these older lower level players revert to prior behaviours. Evidence includes their neafl loss yesterday.

Bell- Agree, he's 27 next year, if he was going to be a consistent performer at AFL level he would have done it by now.
Bewick- Agree reluctantly, I always thought he would make it, not consistent.
Walker- One more year but must cement a spot next year or gone.
Claye Beams- Agree, what could have been but for injury
Paparone- One more year, been injured, worth a go.
Dawson- Agree, I was a fan of his but not going to make it by the look of it.
Lester- Agree but he wont be let go, the coaches like him.
Hinge- Like what he has to offer, still very young, one more year
Barrett- Agree, we have others who can do what he does better.

None of them offer any trade value though, just a clean out.

We will keep a couple for depth and mature age bodies.

We have been really lucky this year with injuries and some of those players will be handy.

I would be surprised if Lester didn’t get another year. I don’t think we’ll hack into our mature depth quite that hard and he has a strong pitch from a culture perspective.

Also, I think the strong and deep draft narrative is out of date. I’m not a draft watcher but Twomey (who seems mainly to repeat what he hears from clubs) has lately revised the line to ‘a strong first round’.

I'm not sure how much of a list clean out we do.

I would like to see a couple of the Lions academy kids and U19 tops ups on the rookie list, that's if they don't get bid on the national draft.

How many players are cut from the senior list might also depend on how many players have to be upgraded from the rookie list. I believe Hinge, Barret, and McInerney all have one more year on the rookie list, while Eagles and Beams would need to upgraded or re-rookied (I'm not sure about the rules here).

I believe Lester may be kept on. Even as has already been mentioned for a culture and leadership role primarily in the reserves. It appears that a few players in the reserves may have dropped their heads, and it's somewhat telling that the reserves were missing leadership in yesterdays game.

A lot of talk was always that this years top 30 odd look particularly strong, and that then talent drops away after that.

Twomey started the year saying there were 8 kids in the top tier, and that has already been extended out to 10 to 12 kids now. Then there is another strong group of another dozen or so kids that make up the second tier.

Twomey is not the only draft/U18 commentator who talks to club recruiters. All the main U18 media commentators do, Brett Andersen did before he joined one of the SA clubs as a recruiter, Knightmare does, Balmer and the AFL Draft Central writers all do, the Footy Prophet writers do as well.

The main difference between Twomey and the others, is that Twomey works for the AFL official media department and has greater access to the club recruiters, AFL academy coaches, the kids themselves, etc. And that Twomey more often sticks to reporting what he is hearing from club recruiters rather than forming and providing his own opinions. By the same token, because Twomey works for the AFL media department, his hands are tied somewhat on what he can report.

Doesn't need to be. It can match a bid made from pick 56 and after.

It's not the pick that makes the difference in that case then, 74 or otherwise, it's the list spot being available.

Given the club's calculations with previous drafts have been inclusive of academy players I think they'll delist however many to let us use any top 30-ish picks we have, and then for any academy boys we want to pick up. I can't see that being a massive list.

I agree. Looking at our current picks, pick 74 is currently our 5th pick. I doubt that it will reman that way through the trade period. I can definitely see the club wanting to use our current first 3 picks. If you read my recent post in the draft thread, there might be a good argument to be made in trying to do a trade with Adelaide, our first 2 picks for their first 3 picks.

It's hard to know if our academy kids would be bid on in the National draft. Through the U18 academy series, there had been almost no talk about them this year. It wasn't until the trial games last weekend that the southern draft watchers got to have a look at them.

I agree with most of the opinions there, but that's just 3 players cut from the senior list. I'd be surprised if we just took 3 players at the national draft. I think we'd cut and take at least one more.

Unless any of Lester, Walker or Paparone get offered rookie deals, which would solve that issue.

I think Paparone might get a year on the rookie list to show what he can do when injury free, which would free up a fourth spot. That would give us space for three early-ish picks and an academy player or to trade someone in/get a free agent. I imagine the club would be hoping that most of our academy kids fall to the rookie draft.

I'm not too sure how keen Ainsworth would be to come to Brisbane now. Have the feeling that his attitude may be 'Stuff Brisbane, they had their chance and decided to pass'. Just purely my gut feel though. Would love to get him to the club because he has a genuine crack and is great overhead for his size.
