And criticizing the club, honestly, I think it's a little unfair. We're all a bit pissed off and emotional at the moment, I get that.

I'm immensely deflated and take the opposition cheap shots as personally as you do.

My impression is we did absolutely everything we could and sometimes in life that is just not enough. You will fall short.

This club will not lay down for anyone or anything. We go back to work tomorrow.

Our players spent all off-season burning at last year's events and I doubt they'll take this lying down either.
Couldn't of worded that better myself. My thoughts exactly.

Thansk for the inner scrote regardless.

I have a friend who knew Gaff before he went to West Coast. My friend is generally an affable guy and gets along with everyone but mention Gaff's name and the way he changes his hilarious. Apparently Gaff is a grade A w***er.
Gaff is a w***er, he has passed up the opportunity to join the greatest football club he could ever wish to play for.......

I don't get why we just don't say, to Bailey Scott. Here is $1m as a signing bonus for year 1 if you choose us instead of Shit Coast or Sleepy Hollow. We have the cap space and it would be like getting a first round pick for nothing in this draft. Surely a wad of cash would tip the balance and it would still give us the freedom to use that $1m next year on Kelly.

You're kidding, right? Just offer an untried potentially good player $1 million to sign? Just like that? Not sure you've thought this through.

Here's a list of players that would rightly be pissed off if a 0 game player was offered a $1 million sign-on bonus (the list is not complete):

Ziebell
Cunnington
Higgins
Tarrant
Brown
Goldstein
Jacobs
Anderson
Dumont
Simpkin
Wood
Macmillan
McDonald
Williams
Vickers-Willis
etc.
etc.

In fact, the main silver lining related to Gaff saying no is the fact that we don't have an outsider getting at least 50% more than the players who have done the grunt work over a period of years. I was always a little uncomfortable with the $1.2m for 7 years, as the top 5 on the above list, at least, would be entitled to suggest they were of similar market value.

You've said this a number of times now. Apart from the obvious draft tampering, you'd want to be certain he was that good to be throwing around silly bonuses.

It isn't draft tampering, you can offer a player a contract above the minimum. First year players sometimes get contracts above minimums. It is a minimum award, not a maximum.

Is he worth it? Some experts have put him in the 20 of a super draft. What do you think?

At this point in time, I don't think he will choose us by default. Why wouldn't you do everything you could to change that.

Maybe in the insular world of AFL it might be a small issue with the clubs.

But leveraging interest from elsewhere to get better deals for your clients is Managing 101. If anything it will have players wanting to flock to him knowing that he's good at his job and can make the most of their contracts.
It's got nothing to do with Connors this time. Gaff personally confirmed he was coming less than a week ago.

The problem for Connors though is as a manager, he needs to ensure that once his player/s make a commitment, they need to stick to it, otherwise it undermines Connors credibility. Next year should he come hawking someone around, the club may not be so forthcoming in putting its nose on the line, because in this instance the player has gone back on an agreement. It may not be his fault, but he needs to take some of the blame. He got a terrific deal for one in his stable, it was agreed to by the player and then the player backed out.

Probably just a mirror of society I guess. You have talkers and non-talkers.

What’s defined as ‘very little’ for you?

I already gave the answer

Look from the quality of posts I have seen you should be adding value on here during the season; c u in 19

Can confirm. I was in a bar in Perth a few seasons ago. Gaff walked up and I wished him luck for the season. He said cheers and walked off with the drink I just ordered. I said "oi campaigner" and he said "I'm an AFL mega star I'll do what I want". I was livid but I knew I only had a few codes left to write before I finished Kangatech and I wasn't going to jeopardise my freedom by belting a 5 foot 6 pip squeak that gels his hair like an anime character.

True story.

So who is putting their name to Kelly ?

Kinda agree to put it to him now or move on. Yes, Kelly is a great player but his non signing would make the club look stupid imo. A father/son who doesnt want to play for us for 1M+ a season...

Get it out of the way now and start with a clean slate.

I have a feeling Connors would “privately “ be fuming with Gaff too.
To renege at the last moment is pretty embarrassing for all concerned.

I think I have seen him when I was waiting outside a Bar but then I think it might have been Andy Lee.

I reckon Andy is a better bloke from what I can tell from his tv shows compared to Gaff

Then what's the solution, Z? What are they doing wrong that you would do different if you were in charge?

Throw even more money at them? Pretend we have higher member numbers and attendances than we actually do?

Really, if you have a solution, I reckon the club would definitely listen. I certainly would.

I reckon there's nothing more that could have been done in the circumstances, but perhaps I'm missing something and so is the club.
Money alone does not entice a player to switch clubs. The people involved in those negotiations play a huge part. Do we have the right people to carry out those negotiations? It appears not as they continue to get left at the Altar. :stern look

We would be more prudent to target players of the ilk of Shaun Higgins. That's why Polec is a good pick up. It would make more sense to use our War Chest in this manner. Now with Luffy on board we can pick the eyes out of all AFL lists and recruit obtainable targets that will improve our football club. Guys who have talent but are on the outer of their current club.

With the High Profile Types we appear to have targeted players from clubs at the top of the AFL Ladder. We need to target High Profile Types at the bottom of the AFL Ladder. It is those Types that are more likely to leave their clubs for ours.

Sure you could say we have been a little unlucky with Martin and DeGoey in that when we targeted them, their teams had finished in low positions in the year previous. And that takes me to my next point. We have gone "Too Early". At least now Player Agents and the AFL community know we have a "War Chest". Make that work to our advantage. Currently it is working to the players advantage. :stern look

Set him a deadline. Then withdraw the contract.

We don't want to be tying up our potential cap space only to be ****ed at the last minute. For the 3rd year in a row.

It has to be Josh agreeing to come this week, or he can finish his career at the Giants or a club that isn't us.
