There's a world of difference between paying a premium of 20-30% to lure a genuine, established talent - such as Gaff, Polec, Higgins, Dal Santo - and paying a $1 million sign-on fee to an untried kid. Surely you appreciate the difference.

I'm saying pay him $1m in 2019 as a sign up inducement, say give him a 3 year deal at $350k per year which is front loaded $1m into 2019 so the cash is still available to throw at a Kelly after 2019 but we pay overs to secure what is a first round calibre player for chump change.

We might already have put a strong deal on the table to him, I don't know. But he is most likely going to play in the state he lives, which makes us effectively miss out on another first round calibre pick in a super draft, after missing on Blakey as well.

If there was a more aggressive club like say Collingwood that had the cap space and could more or less buy another 1st round pick, do you think they wouldn't? We need to get as much talent on the list as humanly possible.

So we've delisted a bunch of players, likely to move on a few others and have a shitload of cash now. We're also likely using our first round pick in some capacity to get polec so we have little to trade

Can confirm. I was in a bar in Perth a few seasons ago. Gaff walked up and I wished him luck for the season. He said cheers and walked off with the drink I just ordered. I said "oi campaigner" and he said "I'm an AFL mega star I'll do what I want". I was livid but I knew I only had a few codes left to write before I finished Kangatech and I wasn't going to jeopardise my freedom by belting a 5 foot 6 pip squeak that gels his hair like an anime character.

True story.
LOL. :stern look

If this is true I am more deflated than just losing out on Gaff.

Our plan b is a convincing a retired guy. To come out of retirement.

What a let down.
Under the proviso if he gets homesick we'll rest him so he can fly back to the Tiwi Islands so he can go fishing and get pissed...

Gotta be bullshit...

What an absolute cluster**** of a year. Didn’t play many young guys because the view was the older guys would help us end higher on the ladder, to help attract free agents. Didn’t attract any free agents. Didn’t end low enough to get a top 5 pick, which could have ended up being pick 5 + Thomas + Scott. Attracted a solid B+ player that will cost us our first round pick and a boatload of cash.

I would have much rathered pick 5, Thomas, Scott, 15 extra games in LDU, 15 extra games in McKay, 10 extra games in Larkey, and a chance for more young guys to shine. Instead we got practically no games into young guys, no first round pick, a solid B+ ‘icing rather than cake’ style player, and a public pantsing for the second consecutive year. The only situation where flooding the team with old veterans for the whole year to limp to a middle of the table result would have been acceptable was if it resulted in Gaff, which it didn’t. Wasted year. Terrible outcome.

To come out of retirement to play part time.

And if he doesn't pan out? He's widely considered a 20-30 prospect in this draft pool, there's a very good chance he doesn't even make it as an AFL footballer.

Every second year is supposedly a "super draft", and no one has Scott anywhere near the top end of this one. I enjoy your posting but it's an absurd idea.

Eagles posters mentioned it would be a 2 year deal. If my maths are correct that would make him an unrestricted free agent at that time.

I'll just set a reminder in my phone to pick this up again then when he's homesick again
No thanks, doesn't get another opportunity with us now.

I saw Andrew Gaff at a servo in Perth yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Jawbreakers in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be indecisive and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the jawbreakers and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and clocked me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each lolly and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by changing his mind really loudly.
