We can stop chasing targets of top 4 teams

We can’t stop mate, you don’t ever stop trying to get the A grade talent, through every avenue available.

Sure, it’s far more likely to pry a gun away from a weaker side/smaller club, but we can’t stop going for the best purely because we’re afraid of being turned down. That will get us nowhere, and justify all the outside criticism we’re getting now.

You're kidding, right? Just offer an untried potentially good player $1 million to sign? Just like that? Not sure you've thought this through.

Here's a list of players that would rightly be pissed off if a 0 game player was offered a $1 million sign-on bonus (the list is not complete):

Ziebell
Cunnington
Higgins
Tarrant
Brown
Goldstein
Jacobs
Anderson
Dumont
Simpkin
Wood
Macmillan
McDonald
Williams
Vickers-Willis
etc.
etc.

In fact, the main silver lining related to Gaff saying no is the fact that we don't have an outsider getting at least 50% more than the players who have done the grunt work over a period of years. I was always a little uncomfortable with the $1.2m for 7 years, as the top 5 on the above list, at least, would be entitled to suggest they were of similar market value.

I'm not going to go Ziebull on saying we must get him, I just think we are rolling the dice and will likely get looked over if we just leave things to chance and that is an opportunity lost imo.

Gaff isn't worth the $1.2m we were going to pay him and Polec isn't worth whatever it is we are going to pay him, you pay a premium to get someone that you otherwise don't have access to. What we pay another player is none of any other player's business unless we have asked players to take a pay cut to bring someone else in. Our players are paid what they are worth. It is why we have the cap space.

I'm all for bring in as much talent into the club, getting a good prospect for 3rd and 4th round picks seems like a great opportunity. We should do whatever we can do within the rules to turn things to our favour.

Said on Friday that a few inner scrote types were gonna have egg on their face after the weekend because Gaff wasn’t coming.

The Plan B is very very interesting. Watch for Cyril’s name to bob up over the next few days.

Is missing AFL football but wants a flexible arrangement where he can still spend his time in the NT. North apparently are very willing to accomodate his needs.

Just saying if we are don't want to risk the disappointment of being turned down, we can do that by not chasing players in top 4 clubs.

I am not advocating that. I hope we chase the best available talent.

I’ve been a big fan of Wingard as a full time midfielder for a long time. I think he’s has all the qualities to become a more damaging midfielder than Gaff and also has the pace. There’s three problems with that though;
1. We’re already trading for a Port player, makes it tough in terms of assets.
2. Giving that much money to sway a guy who perhaps isn’t as motivated as a an elite player should be.
3. Are we too late in the piece to start approaching him.

Paul Connors has always had me worried. He often refers to ‘big clubs’ when speaking about his clients.

As for the ‘guarantee’ Kelly is coming to North at the end of his contract, until I see him in blue and white, there are no guarantees in my book! None.

Brad Scott has always said possession is nine-tenths of the law and ain’t that the truth!

The problem for Connors though is as a manager, he needs to ensure that once his player/s make a commitment, they need to stick to it, otherwise it undermines Connors credibility. Next year should he come hawking someone around, the club may not be so forthcoming in putting its nose on the line, because in this instance the player has gone back on an agreement. It may not be his fault, but he needs to take some of the blame. He got a terrific deal for one in his stable, it was agreed to by the player and then the player backed out.
Well said H

Makes sense that it happened today. The Thursday trip was probably to visit family and say he was ready to come to North. The emotion of Friday night appears to have got to him.
That and the deal being sweetened by the Eagles

How would Ziebell, Cunnington, Higgins, Tarrant, Brown etc. be entitled to the same value as Gaff?

Gaff has had the second most disposals of any midfielder over the last 5 years.

Maybe Brown could come close with second most goals this year.

But I wouldn’t say anyone else could argue they’re the second best in their category.

Sometimes I think we way overrate our players at this club.

Yeah I hear you, and it’s an open wound right now, sure, but disappointment? Really, who honestly gives a ****, right?

Embarrassed? **** it.
I’ll only ever be embarrassed if we were too gun shy or accepting of our mischaracterisation as a minnow club to chase the superstars (which I don’t consider Gaff at all tbh).

There's a world of difference between paying a premium of 20-30% to lure a genuine, established talent - such as Gaff, Polec, Higgins, Dal Santo - and paying a $1 million sign-on fee to an untried kid. Surely you appreciate the difference.

Tell me about it, open wound mate. It’ll settle. Healthy list next year and it’ll be

“Thank god we didn’t waste all that money on Gaff”
