Gws are shopping Shiel because of their cap. Why wouldn’t they keep Shiel and just give us Kelly this year instead of risking losing both. Seems dumb to me.

Because Shiel is a free agent next year and his contract expires next year, it means if he decides to take a Godfather deal GWS will only end up with a compensation pick after their first rounder.
So if GWS can stitch up a deal to get a first this year and a first next year for him and from a club like StKilda or Carltank they will get way better than say pick 14 for him as compo next year.
They also know that if Kelly leaves next year that we (or whoever) will pay 2 first rounders.
So it's in their best interest to ship Shiel off this year as opposed to losing him next year for half of the picks.
