Stating the obvious but we need a great first hour tomorrow. Nevertheless, I do believe we are more than capable of getting a draw with a little application. Seeing Burns, Siddle and Lyon batting comfortably would tell me that this wicket is flattening out. You need to be watchful against the swinging ball but there are no gremlins in this pitch. Dig in and see off the new ball and it gets markedly easier. We're up against an attack that's missing Anderson. I fancy if we can limit the damage against Woakes and Broad for the first hour of our second innings then we can make it hard for them. The pitch is turning but it's slow turn. I think back to 2009 on the same ground when we were able to save the match quite comfortably in similar conditions; I think Clarke and North were the guys who dug deep and that's not without Swann taking out Ponting with a big turning delivery. This time we're up against Moeen Ali. If he bowls us out then we might as well come home.

It's obvious that we need that fifth bowler in the team but we can't go with Marsh and Paine in the same side. It's too weak. Get Smith back in charge and drop Paine. Sod the gossip it will instigate, we need the best blokes for the occasion.

I agree with all that we fell short with the bat, but to put into context, of the 10 visiting teams who have batted first at Edgbaston since 1999 this is the 3rd highest total.

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/en...=span;template=results;type=team;view=innings

In those 20 years, across all innings away teams at Edgbaston yield 28.5 run per wicket and including England it is a total of 31.8 runs per wicket. It's looks like a pretty standard Bimringham pitch and we weren't a million miles from those sort of numbers.

England are turning this ground into their version of the Gabba having not lost here since 2008.

Finally get a break through, and let the new guy acclimatise with your two slowest bowlers.

I don't get it.
Australia getting a replacement ball after 60 overs that swings . Mmm . England would have loved the same when they had to bowl the wet old rag to the greatest batsman since Bradman .

need a change in team structure. swap wade/paine for starc. play four quicks and lyon. won't lose much batting and our tail are all decent enough bats to make it work. starc doesn't necessarily need to bowl many overs, just there as another option.

benefits:
good option if we misread the pitch
left arm, swing option and rough made for lyon
eases the workload of all the quicks. sustained pressure for all 3 sessions.

remember when Burns and Moises Henriques had that horror collision?
Seem to recall it keeping him out for a long time. Yet he has managed a comeback .

Apparently 22% false stroke percentage for the day. Unbelievable to have so few wickets - quite a good article I think:

Credit where it’s due . Burns doesn’t look like much but batted to his limitations , rode a bit of luck and didn’t get flustered with plays and misses .
Doubt he does that again but has put England well in the drivers seat .

Aussies weren’t horrible . A carried edge here or there and on a different day they have England 8-9 down.

Would rather be in England’s spot but a few quick wickets tomorrow and the game swings again

4 wickets in a day . 2 of them from a replacement ball . 4 wickets on day 3 will make 8 /600 . All out lunchtime day 4 with Australia trailing by 400 ish .

I’m sure exactly the same thing that happened today will happen tomorrow, because that’s how cricket works.

So basically one out of every four balls was a false shot but we got only 4 wickeys that really is insane but its also the reality that when you bat first and make under 300 you need a lot of things to go your way to win the test, our top 6 do their job and get through the tough early movement we are still batting into today and would have the runs to absorb a few unlucky sessions.
