Player down during a match sim. Couldn’t see who it was and worried when the stretcher came out

Feel bad when I say I was relieved to see it was Isaiah McKenzie that eventually stood up and limped off the ground with assistance from trainers

Which of Grey/Reid/Pickett took him out?

I get the feeling that I’m going to be sponsoring Brady Grey in a few weeks.

I reckon there’s a fair chance we give the spot to someone who otherwise would take up a lot of points in the top-up squad. So Grey or Pickett (or Frase...)

McKenzie wouldn’t take up many points if we wanted to play him in reserves, and Reid is pretty much free since he didn’t play WAFL for anyone else. But having Grey in the top-ups makes it difficult to have another experienced player.

Sound reasoning.

Took me a while .

Because I was drawn straight to the bottom line of the game show display board and thought for a minute that Dark Sharks was describing himself, thinking that he had one "c " to many and the blank in the wrong place.

Then take two and then I finally I got it. ;)

Silly me.

Had to go south of the river today anyway so decided to swing by lathlain to see if the boys were training. Noticed the usual collection of media types rolling up as I arrived so figured I was in luck

Only after I parked did I read that Rioli was returning to the club today. Good news that he’s back but in terms of access to watch training not so good. Only media were allowed access to the main oval where the main group were training so I had to resort to watching through the mesh fence which wasn’t ideal

The rehab guys were on the secondary oval (MCG) which is completely open and impossible to prevent public access.

Players did their usual warmups including some kick to kick as shown in the video of Rioli I posted earlier and some basic goal kicking practice

Media were then politely told to piss off and the players went into a full field match sim that lasted about 10 minutes. Not sure if it was coincidental but the match sim ended at the same time McKenzie was injured

After he was helped from the ground the players split into several smaller groups at which point Mrs Keys decided she’d had enough Willie for one day and it was time to go

Random observations
  • Sheed was first out doing very low key warmup work with a trainer on the mcg. He did play in the match sim though so no cause for concern there
  • McGovern, Allen, Vardy and Ah Chee did rehab work only
  • Barrass and Venables didn’t play in the match sim. Nor did Rioli
  • I saw Pickett doing 3/4 pace sprints with Rioli, Gov, Barrass and venables as I drove off
  • Rioli looked in good shape
  • Naitanui rucked in the match sim against Fraser McInnes (yes he’s still at the club) and Williams was up forward alongside JK. As you’d hope he controlled the ruck
  • Kennedy kicked two goals from the first two inside 50’s - a snap on his left after feigning to go on his right which had his teammates excited. The other a mark and goal on a sizeable angle. Also gave off a goal assist later on after a marking contest. Was matched up against Edwards and Rotham who had their hands full. Good signs from the big fella
  • McKenzie’s injury came after he was tackled without any significant force. I didn’t realise initially anything was up as the players walked off to have a drink and I was looking at the rehab guys on the other oval. He was on the ground for a few minutes in the hands of the trainers and at that stage I was unaware who the player was. Eventually he got up as a stretcher was being brought out and I could see it was McKenzie hobbling off with assistance. No idea how serious or exactly what caused the injury
  • After going unsighted on Wednesday, Yeo trained and played in the match sim
Can’t relay much more as viewing position wasn’t ideal. Hopefully the restricted access was a once off due to Rioli’s first day back as it seemed a bit pointless turning away the handful of people wanting to watch, especially since Willie ended up on the outside oval doing run throughs.
