Can’t keep Warner in and Khawaja out, it’s unethical. Lyons finger looks troubling. If it’s restricting him bring in Pattinson and give Marnus the spin duties. That alone strengthens both the batting and bowling imo.

Coming back to Australia and we'll want a fifth bowling option.

As much as I hate to say it, he's probably the front of the queue. Marnus' legspin has been handy, but it's still got a bit to go to be considered as a genuine all round option.

The problem is that Mitch is really a no-rounder most of the time. He's not likely to score much unless the pitch is a road (if even that).

The only reason that I would be OK with him starting the next Test is because the workload of our remaining quicks + spinner needs to be managed, plus he'll be facing a relatively tired English attack on what should be a flat pitch.

If this is a 'non-traditional' (i.e - bowler friendly) Oval wicket, I wouldn't even consider picking him.

Smith 300 - lock it in
303 to equal Bradman's record for most runs in a series. 329 to be the first ever to pass 1000.

That would be something else, and not out of the realms of possibility.

Mark Taylor's 839 runs from the 1989 Ashes sits 3rd on that list. He needs 168 to get there. I'm backing that in.

Weird stuff. Surely you roll the dice with some random county performers and young guns like Sibley and Foakes if you're England.

Ashes are gone they might as well stick fat with the current squad with the never again stamp hovering over a few post series.

Wouldn't surprise me if we do the same with Warner and Harris tbh.

Khawaja for Warner, Pattinson for Cummins.

Starc and Pattinson will be fresh, hazlewood has only played 3 tests not 4... We can keep the 4 bowlers and give marnus more overs next test, he'll be feeling good about his bowling.

the UNDOING OF cricket in AUSTRRALIAAAAA was /is PAT HOWARD IN THE past resting players
if fit , they play. then ,horses for courses.
bad form Warner must go ,he is 33 yr. and his eyes are getting slower
the next venue is the Oval

Changes in bold:

Burns
Bancroft

Labuschagne
Smith
Head
Wade
Carey
Pattinson

Cummins
Lyon
Hazlewood

I would like Paine to get a rest but I doubt they will shift him out considering that they want a win at the Oval. I really hope they can fly Joe Burns and let him have a go.

Rest Cummins if needed. Otherwise, swap out Starc with Pattinson.

As important as it is to win this test and really rub their noses in it, I wouldn't be adverse to resting Cummins given the short turnaround. Bloke's done a mountain of work for the past few months. Same with Lyon if his finger's knackered.

Can easily see the same top 6 being picked, regardless of widespread poor form. Really though, no matter who gets a gig, the batting order will have a few holes in it so hopefully whatever combo we name can scrape together enough time at the crease to help Smith (and Marn) make all of our runs.

Our top 2 partnerships currently have the dubious claim to the second lowest average partnerships in any multi-test series Australia has ever played. The only time we've performed worse at the top of the order was back in 1888.

And if we don't get a half century stand in our first two partnerships at The Oval, it will be only the fourth time in our history we've played a 3 test series and not had at least one half century stand in the first two partnerships of any innings. Two of the others coming back in the 1800's (including the 1888 Ashes above) and 1979/80 when the great West Indies tore us a new one.

would rather bring in another bowler (play 4 quicks+lyon) than marsh. reasons being:
. added responsibility for our struggling batsmen
. eases workload of all 3 quicks. certain bowlers can be used in short bursts.
. more options with the ball (especially if lyon is struggling). certain bowlers can used depending on the game situation.
. starc, cummins, pattinson/siddle, lyon are all decent with the bat
. good time (although not a dead rubber) to try something new.
Must admit I hadn't thought about the possibility of Neser coming in and batting 7.

It's an option I would not be averse to. It would be a bit of a weird scenario where Neser is #6 on the pecking order of our quick bowlers but if he gets selected I'd give him the new ball for 3-4 overs because that's where he is most likely to do his damage.

It does give our batting the feeling of being even more light on, but it can't get any worse can it? We all know it's basically going to be down to Smith to score the bulk of our runs, and hopefully Labu to keep his good form going and offer soe support. Anyone else getting a score is a bonus and it's just as likely - or unlikely as it really happens to be - to come from a bowling all rounder, the keeper, a batting all rounder, or a specialist batsmen.

If we go down the path of an all rounder, and I'm pretty certain we will, I think I would prefer Neser at #7 over Marsh at #6.

And he missed 3 innings....
What a Champion.

Marsh is an almost certain selection

Worn out bowlers and a spinner on the brink - we need a genuine 5th bowling option.

Assuming he gets a bowl before the 70th over - he will take wickets.

His batting is no worse than the others - i'm sure he's capable of making an 8 ball duck as well.
He can open the batting. I'm sure he can't score less than 0 in both innings.

Interesting England have gone with an unchanged squad. I suspect Woakes or Curran will come in for Overton.

Wouldn't happen too often where the team on top in a series has made far more changes than the team behind.

15 Australian players used to 14, but a lot more chopping and changing for us.

England have made 3 changes all series - Ali to Leach and Anderson to Archer after the first test, Woakes to Overton for the fourth.

We've changed openers, bought Labuchange in for Smith, Smith has back come in for Khawaja, and rotated all our fast bowlers except Cummins.
Those English 11 are playing for pride and a little slice of redemption if they can tie up the series 2-2.

Not sure if Dobell article on Cricinfo has already been posted, is a pretty good dissection of England. I can't quite remember, but didn't Dobell write an article crowing about how this was the best England side ever right after the World Cup?
The conclusion, in short, was that England weren't as good as they thought they were. They weren't training as hard as they should be; they weren't living the lifestyles they should be. And only by acknowledging their short-comings could they understand where they needed to change and improve. Diagnosis is the very step towards recovery.

Might England be in a similar place now? Yes, we know some of this team have excellent records in white-ball cricket. And yes, we know some of them are hugely talented. But it increasingly seems several of them are living on the promise of what they might achieve rather than what they have. Eventually, such promises must be kept.

Correct. The title of his piece shoud be "England are not as good as the English media made them out to be".

We have to try something different with the openers, they have given us absolutely nothing. The Oval is a ground where you need your openers to bat long.

If Lyon has split his spinning finger, he's a total liability. I'd use the fifth test as the opportunity to bring out the 4 man pace attack:

Khawaja
Bancroft
Labuschagne
Smith
Head
Wade
Paine
Pattinson
Cummins
Starc
Hazlewood

Wouldn't mind Marsh for Head if they want one less left hander, but 3 changes to a winning side is already a lot.
I really like this XI, however i'd give Harris another chance. Khawaja has had enough chances.

Would not surprise me if England drop Roy or Buttler and bring in Curran to also do some bowling since Stokes will not be able to bowl as much as he normally does
I'd drop Roy before Butler. Roy has shown this series he is simply not up to test match cricket.

For crying out loud....

No Marsh duds please! It takes forever to get the useless waste of space out of the team!

If we want a bowling a/R just okay Pattinson or Nesser- they are both scoring the same amount of runs and are better bowlers
