Ummm, we had four Rising Star noms last year, and have blokes like LDU and Walker who have elite traits at senior level.

That isn't enough though. We need a larger pool of talented players around the same age, not everyone who get a rising star nomination becomes a star.

And the ones that do become stars don’t hang around. I’m a true Roos supporter but let’s be honest, it’s been a long time since we’ve had players that other teams want or genuine stars that want to join us.

More referring to Michael McMahon but yes cam also
Both guys won’t be here next year but are in positions we need to talk and identify targets
They might be throwing names up who are potentially available, but this off-season with the staff turnover we've had and all that, I expect it's Rhyce that is doing the majority of the discussions with players he wants.

I think we have had players other teams want, a lot of teams would want Brown, Higgins, Cunnington, Tarrant, etc. We just have too many guys who plateau at too low a level to be a contender.

With respect, none of those are “big dogs”. Higgins can’t even attract a solid long term offer.

Laird, possession getter and pace, two birds as they say. I believe the next papley is gettable on our own list already or via the rookie draft, as guys like papley and amt came from. If I was to target a small forward I'd money ball on Lewis Taylor or even try for Ben ronke if we are talking Sydney.

Really? In what way?

The fact that he gets to contests, wins plenty of 1 on 1s, is strong over the ball and an elite decision-maker? Probably gets him lots of points, but that's because what he does is quality, so the points counting is essentially irrelevant.

Please tell us you're not going to follow that well worn path of applying the label "Dreamteam / Supercoach mentality" as a means of dismissing others' views.

He's a key player in a leaky defence in a side that's fallen apart over the last two years and just sacked their coach.

He's got neat skills and runs hard. I'm not saying he's a bad player, but when I've watched Adelaide, he doesn't seem hugely damaging.

If we have limited currency in terms of a valuable pick to trade and have to choose between using it on a small forward or Laird, I'm going trhe small forward every time.

As I said, I'm backing Paul Ahern to play a distributing half back role next year.

Ahern can be more damaging by foot out of the backline than Laird.

I agree that Ahern has potential in that role, but Laird is a multiple All-Australian half back. He's on a completely different level to Ahern. It's also yet to be determined if Ahern is consisently defensively competent enough to play in the back half. Ahern may end up more damaging, but Laird is defensively good and excellent, albeit maybe not as skillful as Ahern, going the other way.

Banking on Grundy going back to SA the following year when a free agent

I get the feeling they’re going to have a crack this year and that’s why they’re looking to see what’s on offer for players like Laird, Crouch etc.

It makes sense for the pies to trade as well because FA compensation will be bigger all for them.

But like someone said earlier, Pies don’t lose many.

To me, there are 2 main issues with the list.

1. The imbalance of age/experience
2. The need for some more elite talent.

If the club manages to sign the likes of Papley and Laird, it would be great short to mid term, however we need to figure out what our actual long term plan is. The likes of Goldy, Ziebell, Higgo, and Taz are in the twilight of their career, without many obvious replacements in their wake. This is why it’s important for us to draft so well.

Good summary.

I'd prefer Ahern in the mid rotations, which is why I see Laird as a good fit for us, but it's a pretty marginal call because Ahern may well become the half back distributor that we hope for. He has the tools, so to speak.

I'm also just a little skeptical on Papley, but concede his record is pretty hard to knock.

Given Laird is a decent defender, there's no reason he and Ahern couldn't play on the same half back line.

So whats wrong with our center clearance? Too slow/less responsive with both Ziebell and Cunnington in there?

Here's the thing, at nmfc when we say inside midfield our minds immediately go to ziebell Cannington where at Richmond inside mid means cotchin, at buildings it means bont etc. Nmfc's understand of inside mid is someone with brute strength first and foremost with other attributes bonuses where at the more successful clubs, inside mid means agile, fast, explosive, elite disposal skills.

If any on our list, the inside kids should be a.hall, Simpkin, Higgins, ldu, thomas, polec. Furthermore, i would go as far as to say tgrre is no more insude and outside as quite too often, insde mid down at north means plodders who can chase and tackle and are nit very good at spreading.

See this makes sense.
I saw a few games where TT was able to extract the ball too easily as, Jy. So I guess where do we keep Cunnington/Ziebell - both in the forward line? Totally agree with you, I'm just lost on where they can likely be moved to. I feel like it's a bit of surplus with the two running around - while Cunnington is definitely the lock in.

Ziebell's role can look no further than mitch hann. He is someone u want one out in the goal square against a small defender or on the lead against a taller defender. Also ziebell is devastating around 50 arc. Larked is our key position power forward once he grows more physically. Brown is the mobile running big forward as u want him to run and jump in that order.

Cannington has more midfield use but only during general play. He us still a monster when there is a congestion but not at center bounce. Our center bounce 3 should be Anderson, Simpkin, ldu, thomas from 2020 onwards as we need to dutch Higgins to accelerate the evolution of the team.

Did Josh Gibson or David Hale strike you as superstars when another club traded for them?

One thing we got terribly wrong this year was 666. There's definitely no room for both of them at centre bounces but Cunners still did his bit though. Cunners real strength is at stoppages. There's more stoppages than centre bounces. Centre clearances are suited to burst players with high twitch muscles. That's why Jy jumped out of the ground, Geelong played Selwood on a wing and blokes like me remain dumbfounded why Atley doesn't start in the middle.

Really like the thinking of atley, he is our ace of spades superstar player but Scott does not have the vision to develop players. At key is a wasted play at half back much like Higgins at bulldog.

I looked up "dutching" via the urban dictionary, I aint volunteering my services! Probably why Rioli is currently in a pickle
