Probably had the opposite effect. Weller has performed better than Brayshaw.

I don't see him as a cast off like some of the others you mentioned.

GWS wouldn't be offloading him if they thought he'd deliver. They were playing first year players above him this year.

Just saw he's requested to go back to Victoria so it's a bit academic anyway.

Next year's draft is apparently going to be one of the compromised in history. I'd be trying to maneuver out of next year's draft and into this one as much as possible.
Attempting to package picks + players that actually have some modicum of value (Lewy and Cutler) would be the plan - and targeting teams that require pick upgrades/extra picks, or whom may be willing to downgrade picks.

Cutler has indicated a return to Victoria - Geelong (14 & 17), St.Kilda (12 & 18) both Melb clubs and both with multiple picks that should be spoken to.
Sydney like Lewy. Former Rising Star, you'd think he'd have some value.

I'd be looking at something like -

(IF SYDNEY ACQUIRES #9 in PAPLEY DEAL)
Cutler & #21 + future 3rd to Geelong for #14
Lewy & #14 & #16 & #34 + future first (roughly 13-16 I would guess) to Sydney for #5, #9 (if Papley deal goes through), #25 (points value work out pretty well when calculated)
#25 to break deadlock with trading for Ah Chee and appease GC (if required)

OUT: Lewy, Cutler, #16, #21, #34, #Future 1st, #Future 3rd
IN: #5, #9, Ah Chee

Leaves us with picks #5, #9, Ah Chee plus sufficient later picks to hopefully cover academy pickups. Could look further to deal with St.K if they are deep into Hill and Freo concrete on demanding two first rounders better than their current lot (#12 & #18) - Perhaps #9 for their #12 + future 2nd could be possible.

OR IF SYDNEY DOES NOT GET #9 FOR PAPLEY

Cutler & #21 + future 3rd to Geelong for #14
Lewy & #14 + future 1st for #5 & #25. This leaves us with #16 to still take to the draft - or on-trade elsewhere

Either trade with the Swans leaves Sydney in a workable position to continue making a play for Daniher (and paying fair value to the Dons) yet having benefited from picks (and a future 1st) and Lewy.

If neither of these worked out and we wanted to retain picks, I'd still be shopping Cutler to the Cats and/or St.Kilda -

For example with St.Kilda -
Cutler + future 1st for #12.
LEAVING US WITH: #12, #16, #21. Could approach Sydney or Carlton to split their higher picks, us moving much higher up the draft and provide them with the ability to chase their targets.

Geelong;
Cutler + #21 for #14. OR, Cutler + #21 + future 1st for #14 & #17.
LEAVING US WITH: #14, #16 OR ALTERNATIVELY #14, #16, #17 (but losing next year's #first).
Go straight to Carlton or Swans (if they still require picks to split for their deals enabling us to move higher up the draft) and manufacture something there.

I was actually thinking the opposite. Because there could be so many NGA/father son pics, the second and third round picks could be more sort after as so many clubs will need points. Could create a sellers market for points?

I'm enjoying the Bell stance...contracted players worth v's uncontracted...Langdon to Melbourne went straight through with exchange of picks...contracted is a whole new meaning to way overs... The Saints need the Hill trade to go through the delaying means the other trades may just not happen in the time left.
2nd year in a row, on his watch, a club has come after one of their contracted players.

No, but it helps...Part of our "professional world" plan is to keep players happy we recruit their mates or brothers..

Interesting I do not want anyone moved on.. Different to other years where you think someone is a list clogger.
As said rookie someone like Skinner or Lyons makes sense if we need list spots.. Still potential and young

I was going to say something similar, and also add we are one of the teams with potentially three kids who might be draftable in the later part of next years draft.

Some draft watchers are likening Coleman jr, to Freo’s nga kid this year, who’s rated a mid to late first round talent.

It's fairly obvious that Freo have stuffed up just about anything to do with their list over recent years and there's a coup coming there sooner or later . How on earth they ever let Neale out of there beggar's belief. 2 time B/F before he was 25 ,injury free.

Supporters I know at Freo have been shaking their heads for eons.

Clay went onto the rookie list then went to a local Brisbane club Sherwood magpies where he still is. I very much doubt Dayne cracked the shits over Clay when he was still around just not on the Lions list and cracking the shits hardly seems plausible when Dayne then moved to Melbourne leaving Clay up here in Brisbane.

I personally like Bell's stance. Contracts are enforceable. Players want the security of a long term contract but then also want the luxury of breaking said contract whenever it suits them (and then also want the club to deal with the consequences of only selecting a certain club to play for). Carlton did very well out of the Bryce Gibbs situation. An elite player like Hill cannot possibly fathom a FIFO lifestyle given the oodles of cash he is on? I'd hold StK over a barrel. If StK want Hill then they would need to open the whole vault of picks up. If Hill desperately wants to move to Melbourne then surely another team could come up with a decent package. Demons pick 3 + 2020 second rounder for Hill? Why does Bell and Freo need to bend over and accommodate this trade. I think the whole 'disharmony' angle is overblown. Elite players, the ones that get poached like this, are not the type to sit out a year and sook. It will be bad for their future contract if they did that. No doubt if Bell did not trade Neale then Neale would have played his best possible for Freo this year. Freo made the best out of the Neale situation. No doubt they will do the same from Hill

I think Corey Lyons gets a contract extension based off his severe case of leather poisoning this year. C.Lyons needs a massive preseason to lift his running to the next level. I'm hopeful he will eventually crack the team and come in as a ready made player.

Bells position makes perfect sense and should be a position taken by all clubs.If a player is out of contract lets deal fairly and quickly.If a player is under contract with years to go well it should cost extras.
Otherwise why bother with contracts at all.Just sign players on 1 year deals.If the current trend continues a lot of clubs will be screwed.
If I was a player I would want my contract front ended leaving me a pathway to leave before the end and cash in again.

Melbourne had no trouble dealing for Langdon.
Hill went to WA for personal reasons.If I'm Freo whyy can't he stay for another year or two or were his personal reasons just made up.Clearly Hawthorn were screwed for being considerate.
