I hope we keep Archie for this season, then find someone else for ruck #3 in the next trade period. Don’t really like the idea of Eagles playing in the ruck.

Not so sure that Big O would fill the 1st Ruck role should Steff not be available for some reason. In my opinion he is a good tap ruckman but would struggle around the ground. Other teams would exploit that to their advantage and it would hurt us significantly.

Although I do believe that Oscar will leave no stone unturned In trying to better himself in areas of deficiency.

In the last few NEAFL games Matty Eagles played in the ruck, big change from key beckman and boy of bot was his aggression good at the ball and man. He is not a Big O tap ruckman but more of an around the ground type at 200cm and 101kgs compared to Steph at 199cm and 104 kgs. Someone reported seeing him out running in this off season so he is dedicated. I think he will make a fine back up to Steph to give us breathing room this year to draft steph's replacement and get him developed. Matty is not a long term replacement but I'm super confident he will make a contest with the best of them if he is needed. There certainly will be a few top ruckman at other clubs going home sore.

I reckon you're right that I might never meet stefs level as a #1 Ruck, but to be fair stef has been a top 4 ruck in the contest the last two years.

With that said I reckon O would still be in the top half of rucks in the competition as a #1 and very serviceable in the position, particularly when combined with his ability to take marks and play forward. Key would be finding a backup or pinch hitter who can play defensively in the Ruck and who can get around the oval to spell O-Mac when he needs a break

As much as I love & enjoy the Big O fairytale, should Steff be unavailable for selection for a stretch of games, we would be severely handicapped. While the Big O has shown glimpses of what he is capable of, he has by no means elevated himself to being in the top half of best modern day rucks in the comp. (in my opinion)

On reflection that's pretty fair.

I think you're right he's not there yet, but he definitely has the potential to break into the top half in the next year or two. maybe not in pure Ruck craft, but if he can add some more consistency to his contested marking and forward work then as a combo that should get him over the line. Hell definitely need to stop fading in and out of games as much, but a bigger tank should help with that.

Of course, even with all the above being said if O ends up a top 50% Ruck in the next year I reckon it will more likely be due to the dire straits of afl ruck stocks than due to a spike in his performance

There's a big gap between Oscar making us severely handicapped in the ruck and bring in the top half of ruckmen.

Completely agree, Oscar will never be Stef but at the same time Stef isn't going to take to many pack marks inside 50 and potentially kick 20 goals a year.

Oscar is perfect for a 2 ruck set up especially with a mobile ruck as a counter.

G’Day Oscar!

IMO we would be pleasantly surprised at how well Matty Eagles performed as a ruck if there was an injury to O or Stef, would definitely bring some Mumford type aggression to the contest and would be a serviceable mark around the ground. Matty turns 30 next year although due to the very late start to his career and his body not going through the rigors of season on season top flight footy I think he could have at least 3 years left in him.

I think the big O is well ahead of many ruckmen in comparison after just a cpl of years (only one full season). It took stef how many years and a second club to realise his potential. He'll get more mobile as his tank improves and so will his ground work. I have no doubt he will handle the no1 ruck title in a cpl of years. Just hope he gets the same quality back up that he has been able to give stef.

I still stand by my comments but its just an opinion. Big O has obvious weakness's that would be exploited by opposition teams 100% which would significantly hurt. That being said, he's still only 25 years old with plenty of improvement & upside ahead. Providing he does just that each year, I believe he would definately slot into the best top half of ruckmen in the comp. Not there yet by a long stretch.

I think we play a 2 ruckman strategy, that's the Fagan way or a case of using what you have the best. Big O skills at a towering tap out player and someone who can mark it down the line in a pack situation or go forward and while 'resting' provide a target that opposition have to spend a key bigman marking on. Steph is like a big midfielder, running the ground with the big body creating opportunities and taking the intercept marks and getting to the drop of the ball. We have kinda of isolated the rucking role into 2 sets of skills. Collingwood probably thought Grundy and Cox might have the same combination. Melbourne goes with just Gawn and when he is beaten they get flogged. I like our set up, I think the Big O is long term in that position for us we just have to find the next Steph. I think the club has no appetite to join the skills back together and play only one ruckman.

Archie hasn't looked that good this season even at NEAFL level. Granted, Eagles was playing down back most of the year and played ruck for just one or two games, but he looked better in that time IMO. I'd be more confident with Eagles at #3, I reckon Archie is a waste of a list spot at this point.

Eagles played four games of good quality AFL football in 2018 before being sidelined with a groin injury.

Eagles has also been a standout at NEAFL level since being given his opportunity,

Contrary to popular opinion after he was drafted as "The Recruit", he's basically demanded a list spot in his own right.

His CV is far superior to Archie's

I'd back Eagles in over Archie any day. :thumbsu:

Agreed. And there are positives to having a wrecking ball big man - aka Dan Merrett - in the team. One thing about Matty - you know he is going to leave nothing out there.
