One must wonder why we want a first round pick next year in the "most compromised" draft?

I imagine we see very little difference between players rated between 16-30 this year and would rather an extra top ten pick next year.

That's right, top ten thanks Port. ;)

Thats a pretty good deal for us basically pick 6-12 (next year) + pick 29 for picks 16, 53,55. I don't really see how we lose that.
Even if Port loses in the GF in a humiliating fashion and gets pick 17 next year, it'll be pick 29 for 53 and 55. That's not a bad deal on its own, and doubly so factoring in us losing those picks if we didn't trade them.

The trade period continues!!

Trade paperwork lodged. Brisbane Lions has traded its Rd 1 (16), Rd 3 (52), Rd 3 (55) and its Rd 4 (72) selections to Port Adelaide for its Rd 2 (29), Rd 4 (71) and its Future Round One Selection.

We appear to be making out like bandits on this. Port must be very keen on a particular player at #16.

To quote myself previously...

I think the "compromised" thing is overblown, especially at this early stage. Yes, there are a lot of kids attached to particular clubs but we're mainly talking about first round picks. While there might be 17 of 44 from the Future Stars game attached to particular clubs those with links always get the earlier exposure so it's highly unlikely that ~40% of next year's first round will be locked up before we get there.

The key part will be the depth of next year's draft. If there's only a handful of top prospects and they're all linked, that's an issue but no one's suggested that's the case. The actual opinions on the depth have varied according to quotes from recruiters. The "compromisation" storyline has focused on raw numbers rather than projecting draft positions but if a dozen of those end up being third round picks and later it really will end up being no different to a normal draft.

Twomey's theory on this:

I guess they're a motivated seller.

Props to the club for turning this to our advantage. Possibly this has been on the cards since late in the formal trade period.

amazing trade for us. bascially a 13 pick downgrade to get pick 6-12 in next years draft. Picks 52/55 of limited value generally and almost zero to us with our list situation.

Port now have picks 12/16/18/52/55/66/67/68/72 did they even need picks 52/55?

How many live picks do we need. Given Big O will be upgraded is there a chance we make another trade 21/29/34/48 - I.e. no point using pick 48 to upgrade Big O. could shift that for a future 3rd rounder or something.

The expansion drafts were the most compromised drafts.

I’ve said it before, for our perceived list needs, pick 16 was a terrible spot in the draft.

I’m guessing we were finding it next to impossible to trade up this year, with both Geelong and Gold also looking to trade up and holding superior hands to us.

Holding picks 21, 29 and 34 still gives us a hand to trade up into the second half of the first round on draft night if there’s a player we really like who slides.

I’m not so keen on picks 29 and 34. Hope the rumours of Gould sliding are true.

Or possibly we might look at trying to trade 29 and 34 to Fremantle for picks 22 and 58.

Still lots of options for draft night trades.

It’s hard to talk about next years draft so far out, but there might be 5 bids on kids in the first round. Two of those kids belong to Sydney and it’s iffy if either kid is a top 10 pick.

As for the depth. I think the first round might be a bit deeper than this year. It’s the top end talent that looks shallow again, like this year.

Having 2 first round picks might allow us to trade up in to the top 10 next year and

If next year is very compromised we're in a very good position to move up or down and take advantage of teams wanting to position themselves in a certain way with regards to academy picks. We've also got another chip if a club wants to get out of this year on the night for the same reason.

Alternatively we've managed to generate a trade asset in 29 out of nowhere.

Having future draft capital is very handy as well. Good NFL teams do this all the time, ensure they're well placed with flexible assets in future years. Seahawks are master of this. They're always accumulating an extra 3rd round pick which they then use on trades next year. Different codes but having flexibility is invaluable

Not a bad result... I think we win that one:

- IN 71, OUT 72
That's the loose change favouring us

- IN 29, OUT 52, 55
I think that's in our favour too. Not hugely, but a bit. We actually pick up draft points on that one, despite moving up the order (typically, you lose DVI points to move up the order).

- IN 2020R1 (PA), OUT pick 16
I like that. I don't have Port finishing high enough to make that a loss

- IN Death Ride, OUT too many draft picks
YES! Love me a death ride.

Better than letting picks of value go to waste this year. I think it's pretty clear the club aren't in love with any prospects outside the top 15 this year and didn't see an opportunity to trade up before the draft started.

It's my understanding that Big O and Hinge are both upgraded before the draft, as part of out list lodgement. So we don't need picks to upgrade them. After their upgrades, we have 4 senior list spots left and 21, 29, 34 and 48 to fill those spots. Glad we've dealt with the excess picks and having two first round picks and two thirds in 2020 seems like a good balance. Bring on the draft, although this does make the first night/round a non event for us, except to see who is left.

Not necessarily with live trading a factor. We might move back into the 1st round with a combination of our second rounders.
