It’ll be interesting to see what eventually happens but I’m not counting out a cancelled season. What happens then? You can’t just look at last years table IMO. Maybe the last five years and then average it out, maybe a lottery system based on......something? Interesting times.
In that case I predict no draft, and the draft age becomes 19.

Recruiters have been watching the NAB league trial games that have been on the last 2 weeks.

The top end talents are known. It’s the depth talent that is hard to gage.

I wonder how that would work with clubs that have traded future picks - e.g. we have an extra first round pick form Port. How would that work if there is no draft this year?
It a shambles.

If I was an U18 recruiter, I would be hoping that we can get some type of state trial games in late in the year, even if we’re looking at a couple of teams in each of the various states, and up to 6 teams in Victoria.

Even as late as the Christmas holidays, after school finishes.

Say 6 weeks of trial games before Christmas. Then after Christmas and New Years we have the U18 National Championships.

Play the games at night, and move the Championships to Tassie for 4 weeks. Utilise the same accommodation as the Lions use, Uni dorms that are empty at that time of year.

Bonus for Tassie would be it would provide a nice little economic boost. Especially if a lot of families went down as tourists to watch their kids and explore Tassie, while the kids trained.

Oh man the next years draft would be crazy deep then.
You misunderstand. It would have exactly the same players, just that every draft class gets moved back by one year. Those who would have been eligible for 2020 would then only become eligible in 2021, those who would have been eligible for 2021 would then only become eligible in 2022, and so on.

I wonder how that would work with clubs that have traded future picks - e.g. we have an extra first round pick form Port. How would that work if there is no draft this year?
It gets carried over to 2021. As far as I can tell, you're not allowed to trade picks two years in advance, so there won't be an issue.

Forgetting the draft stuff for the moment.

* List sizes to be reduced.

* Possible renegotiation of the CBA, reducing the tpp.

* Long term contracts possibly renegotiated to fit under the new tpp.

* AFL determined to do what needs to be done, to play the remaining 16 rounds once the government says it’s ok to play.

* AFL not confident U18 football will be played this season.

* Draft will go ahead. Not sure when.

I really think they should move back the draft age to 19. Give the kids that missed their chance the ability to shine, give the 23rd guy on the list the chance to prove his worth, give the clubs the chance to negotiate on existing contracts without having to worry about delisting and bringing in new unsighted players

Yeah, there’s bit of support for moving the draft age to 19 if that’s how this year pans out.

Still some people dead set against moving the draft age to 19.

Make the NAB league and the underage championships an U19 competition. That way there’s no conflict between the NAB league and private schoolss.

Also could structure the NAB league to finish well before VFL season, so VFL clubs could call up kids towards the end of their season, so we see the best Vic kids against men.

Kids in the other states are already playing in the SANFL, WAFL, NEAFL and TSL.

It does seem with those possibles the people clinging on to an 18 draft age need to be more flexible and look not only at the plain reality in front of them, but the possible future in which many are actually benefited.

Doing this really hurts the Matt Rowell and Sam Walsh types who have nothing to gain from another year in development as well as missing out on an AFL players starting wage.

Also can’t see 19 year old rule coming this year unless the AFL can offer some added incentive to the clubs who traded in picks for this year which would be heavily compromised with the new ruling.

expecting clubs to go through the current process of delisting and drafting at least 3 players is ridiculous. Yes, some dynamo kids will be hurt because they can’t instantly join an AFL environment but good luck to every club picking anyone outside thefew established sure fires.
I really think you should have one round, based on the 2019 rankings with no forced delistings. Then you’ve got the surefire kids into a system and every other team gets a kid they rate from limited vision and everything else gets a reset, in draft terms.

I 100% agree with the first part.

The way I figured it, would be to not have a draft this year, and just move all the traded picks to 2021 draft.

I imagine this rule would change as well. Probably only have to delist a minimum of 2 players.

There could be an exception for this year. All clubs to draft a minimum of 1 player.

First and second round pick trades from last year stand. Everything else gets wiped, and all clubs start with a clean slate from the 2021 trade and draft period.

Never thought I'd agree with David King, but along side Clarkson and Pendlebury he makes sense (yes i was against this when Bevo muted it but hey I'm wrong at least 50% of the time).

Fox Footy analyst David King agreed with Clarkson in saying the current system needs an overhaul.

“In my opinion, the Under-18s system, the way it sits at the moment, it needs to go,” King said on Fox Footy Live.

“It served a purpose. It’s changed so much now, I think that you take these kids out of their area to go to private schools and all these sorts of things and that’s become the only feeding ground.

“We drafted 65 kids last year, we’ve gotta leave these kids in their areas to drive football in their areas.

“We’ve all played with the gun kid and we all play with the gun kid because we want to see him every week. As soon as he takes off and goes to another team and is gone, the fun and enjoyment of that young group is gone.

“I think we’ve dragged kids to private schools and I know it’s great for their education and there’s upside to it, but I think it’s come to a point where its hurt our game.”

That all sounded like nonsense to me personally, not sure where the “hurting our game” comes from.

Welcome, to a supporter from a side who has probably been one of the bigliest beneficiaries of the Melbourne private school vacuums we have ever seen.
Vested interests no?
I mean I get the areas point he makes, not sure what that has to do with lifting the draft age though which is where the topic is leaning towards.

Yeah, very bad call there.

eDPS works for AFL Draft Central. There’s no club bias when it comes to talking about the draft, and the kids. He’s one of the guys who talks to a lot of the kids every year, and knows what they’re thinking, especially about the current raising the draft age discussion.
