Yeh I think the hip injury makes the most sense to attribute Hayward's woeful goal-kicking this year. He went from probably our most reliable set-shot to probably our least over the course of a few months out of nowhere, I'm happy to chalk that up to his injury until we get further evidence when he's fit.

probably got in his own head in the end too

Players in groups (for sure I'll forget someone):
Tall defenders Aliir, Melican, McCartin, Maibaum
Mid defenders Mills, O'Riordan, Dawson, Thurlow, Rampe, Fox
Small defenders Lloyd, Ling, Stoddard
Some of those stats reflect a difference in role. Having said that I agree that Paps is probably better at this stage.

Assuming we don't get Daniher, and we lose Papley and Jones. This is how I imagine our best 22 looking at the start of 2020.

B: T.McCartin, D.Rampe, L.Melican
HB: J.Lloyd, A.Aliir, H.Cunningham
C: O.Florent, I.Heeney, G.Hewett
HF: J.Dawson, L.Franklin, N.Blakey
F: B.Ronke, S.Reid, L.Parker
FOLL: Naismith, J.Kennedy, C.Mills
I/C: J.Thurlow, D.Menzel, J.Rowbottom, W.Hayward
EMG: R.Clarke, C.Riordan, J.Bell, R.Fox, C.Sinclair

In your opinion. I disagree entirely. I think if he was given the chance Mills could be one of our top midfielders.

Have you based that entirely on what he did as a 16/17 year old (who didn’t get to play against his peers in his final year due to injury)?

Not entirely as Mills played in the midfield in our first practice match this year and played really well. You are right though that I am not basing it off much though simply because Longmire has not given Mills the opportunity to prove what he can do in the midfield. Longmire basically refuses to even let him have a go there.

I am sure they have their reasons. Plenty of time to see him at match sims at training. If he is getting owned by the existing Swans mids then it would be folly to play him there.

My position is if he was a midfield gun, he would be playing there already.

and I think Longmire is pig headed enough to not even be willing to entertain the possibility of really trying Mills in the midfield as Longmire does not want to admit to being wrong.

Do people see Hayward transitioning into the midfield? I feel like he'll always be a 3rd tall and little else

I don't. He'll only find himself up the ground when we empty the forward line out.

I think you’re making up things in your mind to suit your argument.

I am going to back our coaching group and their 1000+ games of AFL football that they are making the call on what they see and experience than any pig headedness.

Nope can't say I do.

He was the youngest player to 50 career goals since Buddy for good reason. He has a pretty special ability to just find himself in the right places at the right moment inside 50. If it was here and there throughout the year you could chalk it up to luck, but he is routinely amassing a handful of scoring shots on a weekly basis. That's just good forward craft that can't be taught. Even this year, if he kicked straighter he'd have had 20-25 goals, which from a season where he played only 13 games, would have been a very, very good return.

IMO players like him who are just as good in the air as they are at ground level are rare, and you need to keep them around goals where they can do the most damage (I am a big fan of medium forwards though so I may be bias.)

id like to see mills chucked in there once or twice

but suspect you are right

plus his best footy was reading flight, interceot work etc

You seem stuck in some constant circle, everything comes back to Longmire.
The Longmire Loop.

In my experience watching the AFL, it's very, very rare for a guy who has never averaged much more than 15 touches in under 18's or in his time in the AFL can just magically transition into the midfield and do it well. Not saying it can't happen, but I don't hold much hope that Hayward can move into the midfield with any real long-term success.

I'd like to see him play more up on a flank but he'll need a bigger tank for that. I'd love to see him getting the ball more beyond the 50m arc and delivering inside 50. He started the year really positively before his broken jaw and hip, I'm not discounting he has that ability.

As for Mills, his 2nd half of the year was fantastic down back. To me, he was starting to show the presence needed to lead the defence. I'd be stunned if he was moved now that he's just starting to make that next step up.

If he gets a full pre-season in and plays a full year in 2020, he could be pushing for the AA squad on the basis of that form.
