Alir is traditionally poor if you try to make him play one on one.

the closest comparison for him is westhoff when he played back.
Id back our defensive coaches and captain to be able to get AA to defend. I think he will be a big upgrade on Clurey and allow McKenzie to go back to intercepting and delivering the ball rather than playing full back to cover Clurey.

I’m actually fine with getting Alir but think he would cost more than I would like and would not want him to get a guaranteed starting spot.

but if we’re overpaying for Fantasia (who is much less of a need than Alir) paying heavily for Alir will at best mildly compromise our 2021 draft and worst really impact our 2021 draft hand.

Butters and Rozee turning out to be A grade midfielder gets us closer to a flag than Drew Rocky ect.
And that is in no way dependant on getting Fantasia.
Orazio at his best gets us closer to a flag than Woodcock and I’m a massive fan of his.
if you want to play the “at his best” game while ignoring recent history I can match it

Motlop at his best gets us to a flag.

how is my statement substantially any less credible than yours? Both are relying on the same things to happen to each of them ie a reversal of form and that they’re the thing that sends us over the top.

McKenzie was traditionally poor, get someone into a decent system and you never know what'll happen.
McKenzie wasn’t played in the position and I think we can agree that mckenzies resurgence is the exception rather than the norm.

it’s not that Alir can’t defend, it’s a reference to the type of player he is. Even though he is tall he isn’t very good one on one when forced to body up as the poster I replied to suggested. He likes to run around and jump at the ball. It’s why he would be horrible in clureys last line of defense role.

Just a difference of opinions, M8. Neither has more credibility than the other.

As posted earlier in this thread, at the end of the 2018 season, Aliir Aliir had the highest percentage won of one on one contests in the league and was also ranked equal-first for average intercept marks.

He sounds like the prototype Montgomery defender.

Yep. I dont understand the criticism of him going for his marks.

We got rid of Dougal because he wanted to halve every contest.

Seems like someone who can hold his own and take an intercept mark is exactly what we want

If we somehow come out of this with Aliir Aliir, Charlie Constable, Fantasia and Lachie Jones, we are laughing. I know we all want a star player, but unfortunately no one is available that wants to come to us. This adds much needed depth all round and the potential that all 4 slot straight into our starting 22.

If we get those 4 that would be unreal. DOn't think we have the currency to get Aliir and Fantasia though without compromising our position a bit in the super draft next year.

Hopefully we aren't stupid enough to trade any picks in next year's draft or run into a deficit in matching a Jones bid.

In an ideal world if we could get: Aliir, Jones, Schofield, Constable and have no deficit for next year and no picks lost for next year we are laughing.

We could then look at Fantasia for free at the end of next season, if he still looks like being worthwhile to pick up.

Random thought. If Aliir doesn’t come because he doesn’t want to be back up to a settled back 7 (and who could blame him) there is one bloke who might- Jackson Trengove.

I’m assuming of course that he gets delisted by WB but he could do everything Aliir could:

Play on monster forwards
Pinch hit in ruck
Fill in for Dixon if he is injured, suspended or rested and we want to keep the same forward structure.

Can you imagine the fairytale if Jacko comes in for an injured Jonas, towels up Hawkins and then Cameron on his way to 10 intercept marks and a Norm Smith, in a winning Port team of course?

We have to be realistic, we are not going to be involved in the super draft at all next year. Our first pick is going to be eaten up completely by a Burgoyne bid. We are better off trading that out this year. If next years first is not used in a trade for a player, don't be surprised to see us do a very late pick swap this trade period. Where we give up our first next year for a number of later picks.

Unfortunately Trengove is shit now. There is a reason the Bulldogs hardly played him this year and will probably delist him. The Bulldogs have terrible key backs and he still couldn't get a game. Hard pass.

theres absolutely no way of knowing that jase will go before our first pick, in fact most pundits have him going outside the top 18 or so as things stand.

there’s also no reason to trade out a pick a year before we have to. It’s not going to decrease in value.

Just about everyone here has said:

1) we are really old
2) we have no KPDs
3) we need more depth

Getting Orazio and AA would solve all of those. Constable too if we can get him.
macca I love your optimism and positivity but I'm glad you're not Port's list manager :)

There’s also every chance we hold it and look to use it in a deal to move up in that draft, especially if we think Burgoyne goes early enough that we might be able to sneak a pick ahead of him as well.

I'm assuming so for the club to actively pursue it

Carlton making Essendon sweat.

Not budging on Pick 8 for Saad + future 2nd.

Essendon are reliant on Pick #8 to help unlock their other deals with GWS/WB.

that’s more than generous for Saad. There’s no way he’s worth a top ten pick.

If he's gettable, he should be a priority for us - ahead of Fanta pants anyway.

Paul Connors on trade radio was pretty cautious and generic when asked about Aliir Aliir just a few mins ago. But I reckon the vibe was that this is a decent chance of going down.
