Lol no ones taking Rockliff. He should never play AFL again. He is beyond slow, theres levels of slow you can manage, then there's Rockliff who opposition players can run laps around without feeling any pressure.

This didn't age well...

I'm as shocked as anyone that Rocky found a way to still be relevant.

I still stand by the Rockliff comments. He comes in, plays a few good games against lesser midfields and then gets found out against quicker midfields. Its happened before and will happen again.

It was probably a bit of a simple statement, but without a doubt Richmond's midfield wasn't built with their usual talent and even then it doesn't have that fast reflex style inside midfield that he and we've struggled against for a few years now.

He didn't play against the Saints so I can't reference what would've happened had he played then, nor did he play V GWS, but he did get pantsed V Brisbane.

Maybe I am, but I find it hard to believe I'm in the minority when it comes to Rockliff.

AN established tall key defender over 198 would be handy - dare i say in the Dougal Howard mould....

Similar height, but with 300% the footy smarts would be useful.

people can say what they like and i do agree with you, but he has been very good for the Saints this year.

Yep, agree he's contributed to some good performances for them. Couldn't play in the style we have been trending towards, so it all made sense to me to move. Particularly given it was a little like found money given where we picked him from.

I loved Dooooogs and perhaps he suits the Saints game style but wasn’t it suggested that he couldn’t do what Monty expected of him here?
correct - Monty was not a fan. Spoiled too much, played back shoulder rather than intercept etc and not the best by foot.

I would have thought these things could be worked on didn't we want to play forward but he wanted to be a defender?

To be honest I would have been on board with you about Rocky before his dropping.

Since then and having seen him play the defensive mid role twice live I think he is doing it very well.

I even made a smart arsed comment before the Richmond game about Rocky trying to defend Dusty at the stoppage but when it came to it, he nailed him.

He has come back a different player, playing a different role and he is nailing it.

I liked doogs potential if he started marking more (which I’m not sure he has)

and I wish we had key defender depth or a defender over 194cms

but I’m happy with the way the backline is functioning, I can see a clear plan there for mobile guys who can take marks and move off their opponents

and I’m happy we got williams and a future second onto our list.

a clear win.

the downfall is the fact we haven’t drafted or traded for key defender depth after losing hombsch, Austin and Howard but that’s a separate list management issue.

we could have traded Howard and still addressed that.

The western bulldogs are quick. Again Rockliff was horrid. 23 disposals, 14 contested, 4 clearances, 15 tackles.

Some people just can't admit that Rockliff has adjusted his game to deal with his lack of speed by his anticipation and positioning, his quick (and usually accurate) disposals and his workrate. He is an integral part of our midfield.

He is smart enough to play by the philosophy that most of our midfield do. 'Get it on the inside and flick it outside'.
