I just can't understand why we need to drop a top 10 pick on a KPD when with Cox and Ryan playing as our KPD we can defend very well. Even if Hammer never plays again and Pearce only scrapes to 100 games, Logue will be back, Cox improves again and suddenly Ryan is 3rd or 4th banana again.

No sale for me. I just don't think it makes enough difference to the team. I'd rather find a Dawson type at pick 120 and use the top 10 on quality forward or mid.

It's not just key forwards that can make handy defenders.
...I do think the most fitting role for 0% footballer, 100% athlete if they have enough burst speed and leap would be a key defender - but is that player going first round anyway?

Logan would be the first preference, but it's not like a tall who can mark won't be able to find a use for that somewhere.

There is no way all 3 of Logue, Hamling and Pearce are cooked. Even Sandi came back at his ripe old age from turfing the biggest toe of all time. Cox showing what he has the last month is so good for us. We could write off Pearce and Hamling and still have Ryan, Logue and Cox to cover as required and let’s not forget we used a top 10 pick on Young who is another defender.

Short of it getting to our pick and having DGB rated 10 spots higher than anyone left, I couldn’t justify taking him unless he showed something up front the rest of the year. Defending is not costing us games - even with arguably 4 of our first choice back 6 out injured most of the year. Get a KPD with a 3rd or something the next couple of drafts if Pearce/Hamling dont get on the park

Who do you go for then? A Vic Metro boy or reach for Carroll or O'Driscoll? Or take a Ruck/forward?

If we are likely to have pick #8+ (ie #6 minus deficit) and Walker is probably going to get a bid before our 2nd (tied to Melb) I wouldn't be against trading it and our 1st for two (later) 1st rounders. I have a feeling we are going to miss that ultra talented first grouping of players but it feels a bit more even from then onward so we might pick up two good prospects before the Walker bid comes and Western added following that.

edit - Not saying we should definitely do this - just think it should be a consideration.

Probably the only year where I will agree with this (pending details). Not usually in favour of splitting a top 8-10 but I think with the lack of vision of Vic kids it becomes a real lottery outside of the top half dozen or so.

I understand its risky but I'd be trying to do whatever we can to get McDonald. I know I laughed at WC drafting Allen a few years back given they had talls for a few years but you need to plan 5 years out for KPFs and I dont want to see us having our draftee's since 2016 in their prime in another 4-5 years and no FF to kick to.

If Kanga's finish 2nd last and we were confident that Adelaide werent taking McDonald then I'd be comfortable sending our furture 1st with our current first and to get pick 2 and some back end picks for points. This won't happen since we have never traded a future first round pick but that's my preference.

2nd preference would now be for O'Driscoll since we could use a bit more size and power in the middle once Mundy goes and Fyfe becomes all but a permanent forward

So let's call Logue a small due to his role, that's three talls
There is only one matchup that comes to mind that bothers me and that is Cameron. For most of the rest, one of the smaller guys can get it done.

I am not taking DGB and playing 4 talls so that once every 15 games Logue can play on a dangerous small.

Pass.

Nathan O’Driscoll seems to have moved ahead of Zane Trew in the pecking order in recent weeks? A few months back everyone was talking up Trew as a top 7 or 8 pick. What’s his perceived weaknesses?

I think for most draft watchers he has always been ahead.

Kicking accuracy apparently. Has penetration but his ball drop is a little weird in the small amount I have seen.

Looking at highlights, I would think O'Driscoll has more glaring weaknesses than Trew? I could be wrong.

I dont have enough knowledge to justify why one is a better player than the other so I defer to draft watchers who have always had O'Driscoll higher. For me, he also fits a need as a massive powerful body in the middle that we wont have in a couple of years

I get Danger vibes from him (without the contested marking). I'd take that even if he was a light version.

I loved watching O'Driscoll as a bottom ager but I've honestly been a bit underwhelmed with what I've seen this year. Still looks a very good player, just probably my expectations being set too high given how well he did in the 2019 u18s.

I wouldn't draft DGB unless Pearce and Hamling retired or you think he can make it as an AFL forward. This will hopefully be our last top 10 pick for some time and we already used 8 on Logue. I don't see how you can justify another on DGB where history shows that quality KPDs come from everywhere in the draft.
I both agree and disagree, and for the very reasons you stated. The situation is very much dependent on the availability of the respective personnel in defence. My absolute greatest preference in terms of a drafting target is Logan McDonald, but I just can't, for the life of me, foresee an avenue to securing him, without having to forego our initial draft pick next year.

Agree on McDonald.

We have the 2nd best defense in the comp this year with a new coach, minimal training and only Cox who remotely qualifies as a KPD. Explain what DGB adds to that is worth pick 6-8?

I agree, I guess that as others have said, we may find ourselves in the precarious position where the club possesses a selection that falls in that "limbo-like" zone, where we'd be "reaching" for those Western Australian mid-field prospects that reman on the board, and thus it would be logical to select Denver Grainger-Barras (assuming he is deemed the best available prospect, relative to his draft position).

I have zero qualms taking Victorians (pending them not being obvious flight risks). If the WA boys aren't next best, take a Victorian/Saussie.
