But when he does play he plays at a higher level than he played with us in 2017 and 2018.

The stats don't back you up on that. His performances in 2019 were as good as his performances in 2017. His performances in 2020 were worse than his performances in 2018. In 2017 and 2018 he managed to play 38 games for us. In 2019 and 2020 he only played 13 times.

I feel like we have already had this conversation before... probably because we have.

They began rebuilding his body, and that often results in a lot of soft tissue injuries. Fact remains that Hannebery played a few good games of football this year, something he did not do for the entire 2017 and 2018 seasons under Longmire and our medical staff.

This is just nonsense.

In 2017 Hannebery had nineteen 20+ possession games, a few over 30 possession games in there too. He averaged 25 possessions and five tackles per game. His numbers were a little down on his 2015 and 2016, which were easily the best seasons he has had in his career, but they were still good. In 2018 he was definitely down on his output, but was still picking up over 20 possessions in about half of the 15 games he managed that year.

The idea that St Kilda's medical staff have done a significantly better job with him in 2019 than we did in 2017 and 2018 is not born out by any sort of critical examination. St Kilda have had him injure himself in preason trying to get him ready for the start of the season, he missed the first half of the year as a results and then two games back he reínjure himself with the same issue that had kept him out of the first 13 rounds. He has only managed five games.

While his numbers in those games have been decent, I'd suggest you compare his stats in those games to 2017.

The only major difference between Hannebery in 2017 and Hannebery in 2019 is that in 2017 those numbers represent the average of 23 games and 2019 then represent the average of just 5. In fact, he had six games for us in 2017 in which he gathered more possessions than in any of the five games he played for St Kilda this year.

So no, St Kilda have not managed to get more good games out of Hannebery that we did over 2017 and 2018. They have got just five games of him at an equal level to his 2017 output because they have had him repeatedly injure his hamstring.

You really want to bash the club on this point, but the facts do not support you.

Averages are not a brilliant way of arguing your point as Hannebery had several return games from a long injury in 2019 which skews the averages massively, especially since he only played a few games in 2019.

23 disps (15 kicks 8 hballs), 6 marks, 6 tackles and 2 goals in Rd 21 3-pt win over Fremantle at Marvel Stadium (11 Aug 2019)
28 disps (14 kicks 14 hballs), 3 marks and 5 tackles in Rd 23 45-pt loss to Sydney at the SCG (24 Aug 2019)
27 disps (15 kicks 12 hballs), 4 marks and 5 tackles in Rd 14 56-pt loss to Brisbane at Marvel Stadium (22 Jun 2019)

Those are just 3 of the 5 games Hannebery played in 2019, and I am willing to bet you would struggle to find 3 games in 2017 and 2018 where Hannebery had better stats.

Dan's best games from 2017 and 2018.

2017 Rd 3: 31 disposals, 4 marks, 1 goal, 9 tackles
2017 Rd 7: 26 disposals, 5 marks, 1 goal, 8 tackles
2017 Rd 8: 33 disposals, 5 marks, 2 goals, 4 tackles
2017 Rd 9: 30 disposals, 12 marks, 2 goals, 8 tackles
2017 Rd 10: 35 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles
2017 Rd 12: 28 disposals, 6 marks, 1 goal, 4 tackles
2017 Rd 14: 29 disposals, 3 marks, 1 goal, 3 tackles
2017 Rd 17: 22 disposals, 6 marks, 9 tackles
2017 Rd 20: 21 disposals, 4 marks, 2 goals, 5 tackles
2017 Rd 21: 29 disposals, 6 marks, 5 tackles
2017 Rd 22: 28 disposals, 3 marks, 5 tackles
2017 EF: 21 disposals, 8 marks, 6 tackles
2017 SF: 27 disposals, 5 tackles
2018 Rd 21: 26 disposals, 4 marks, 1 goal, 3 tackles

You just lost your bet.

You were wrong back then. You are still wrong. Why you persist, I have no idea.

B: Rampe - Melican - Lloyd
HB: Mills - McCartin - Dawson
C: Florent - Parker - Blakey
HF: Heeney - Reid - Hayward
F: Papley - Franklin - McDonald
FOL: Hickey - Kennedy - Rowbottom
INT: Wicks - Cunningham - Stephens - McInerney
EMG: Hewitt, Campbell, Sinclair, COR

I feel dirty for not having Hewitt in the side, but Kennedy, Parker and Rowbottom are already pretty much pure inside mids plus we have Heeney, Florent, Stephens (junior career) and Mill's (Emergency injuries only) who can all play that role.

Agree with Punts that we need another pressure forward, plus I liked what Wicks brought to the team late in the season (wouldn't surprise me to see Ronke either if his injury free).

Kept Reid in the side to be backup ruckman, plus the coaches rate his versatility.

You should feel dirty. ;)

We really missed George this year. He was 7th in the Skilton in 2018 and if he is fit at the start of 2020 I see no reason why he won't be taking on an important role in our midfield.

I'd suggest Hewett would make this side over Hayward given all other players are locked in. Don't need another forward with Heeney, Reid, Franklin, McDonald, Papley, and Wicks all likely playing mainly forward along with Blakey. Plus coaches seem to love Hewett's versatility/discipline and can play as a tagging forward much as Hayward did towards the end of 2020. Hewett a definite starter in my 22.

Not sure the coaching staff will drop Hayward, I think they liked the fact they could use him in a defensive role on an interceptor/ rebounding defender to great effect later in the season.

If Hewitt comes in I think it may be for Stephens or Wicks (If they feel we have enough defensive pressure).

Have to say, it's nice to be in a position with our team where we can argue about who makes our line-up, last season I felt like it was name whoever was fit at the time.

Hewitt for wicks seems the most likely for me but I'd again put my money on Campbell being in the team Rd 1 also. Who for? At a guess it's say Florent

I was desperately trying to find a way to fit Campbell in our side just for his disposal.

I don't think the coaching staff will drop Florent, they rate him higher than most on this board (evidenced by him finishing tenth in our B&F this season). Florent also offers us evasiveness around the packs that our other players don't really have (with the exception of Papley).

The most like for like drop out would be McInerney but I really wouldn't want to do that after his late season form.

I also think that one of COR, Gould and potentially Ling (pending pre-season) will make the team, but I have no idea who they come in for.

Yes he's in our best 22, especially given our lack of size around the contest. I suspect the club was trying to shop him around in trade period to gain more draft points just in case the Hickey or Aliir deals fell through.
His next game will be his 100th.

Buddy sounds like he's more or less on track for round 1 if there are no more mishaps (biggest if of the decade).

Too early to get a bead on where Logan Mc is at but if he's done a solid year in WAFL good chance he'll get a few games next year. If no Buddy then maybe a lot of games.

PReseason there always seem to be a lot of players lining up to be selected but injuries and form whittle them away pretty quickly.
I like COR, too, he's a good kick and good decision maker. Will Gould and Chad Warner can't be far off.

We really need big seasons from Ollie, Hayward and Lizard.

I went through the exercise and came up with 14 "must selects" assuming fitness. From the back:
Cunningham
Rampe
Lloyd
Mills
McCartin

Kennedy
Rowbottom
Blakey
Parker
Dawson
Hewett

Heeney
Franklin
Papley

The remaining 8 places from EVERY other player except the two new rookies and O'Connor. They have all had senior experience except Gould and all have something to offer.
Preseason and trials are going to be incredibly important in choosing that 8 plus covering any injuries.
I have my favourites but there is a decent argument for almost any of them. FWIW:
Big Tom
Ling
Melican
Hayward
Reid
Wicks
Stephens
Florent
Very arguable and no debutants.
Have at it!

HB: Dawson McCartin Lloyd
C: Florent Hewett McInerney
HF: Blakey Franklin Heeney
FF: Papley Reid McDonald
R: Hickey Parker Rowbottom

Int: Melican JPK Stephens Hayward
Eme: Sinclair COR/Fox Campbell

Notes/Assumptions:
- Balance between mature bodies/competitiveness (Reid, JPK, Hayward are a bit vulnerable) and development (McIn, McD, Row, Stephens)
- Hewett can play as a pure mid (based on evidence, incl 2nd in B&F 2019 which was partial tagging, partial mid)
- Campbell unlucky, but if he can get past others like JPK, Florent, Hayward sure
- Fox would be a threat to Melican, depends on form/injuries and oppo.
- I'd be hoping the likes of Campbell, Gulden, Warner, Ling, Gould can force their way in at some stage, hopefully sooner rather than later for our future.
- Clarke will always float around as a mature body/good tagger and may make appearances depending on injuries/form.

I thought Cat B rookies are the ones who need to be elevated to play.

Would he even make the side anyway? Bare in mind he played as an undersized defender and Rampe comes straight back in.

I thought this year they changed that and didn't have to be elevated, and are continuing it for next year as well.

Yeah:

Maximum list sizes have dropped from 47 to 44 next season, inclusive of two Category B rookies who are now eligible to play as part of the revised Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Previously, Category B rookies needed to be upgraded in order to be selected to play AFL.

Yeah I changed it just after I posted (that maybe Fox can play all year). Either way, I feel with Rampe, McCartin, Dawson, Mills and possibly Melican down back, there's not a lot of room for Fox, although I was happy with his work. Given Melican is prone to form drops, he could slot in if Gould or COR don't force their way in.

Yep. The only thing that should keep him out of our starting midfield from now on is a) JPK somehow turns it on back to career best form (with Parker, Rowbottom also dominating) or b) Hewett's injuries limit him (in which case if it's a durability issue, I'd have him up forward, good kick). 2nd in B&F in 2019, playing mid as well as tagger - 24 y.o.
Anyone leaving Hewett out of Best 22, please report to re-education camp immediately.

Per your last point, I think it is a bit unfair to lump Blakey in with Florent & Hayward, two guys that have been on the list two years longer and are also now in that 22-23 age range where they should be showing more.

Blakey is a 20 year old who just finished his second season. Same as Rowbottom and McInerney, and I'd argue, despite his inconsistency, that he's shown just as much as those two, maybe even more. So I don't think he needs a big season, so much as it would just be a kind of bonus if he did have one. There shouldn't really be that kind of pressure and expectation on a third year player, particularly a developing 195cm player.

Consistency of position will help, and that started to happen late in the season once he was more on ball where he was classy AF.

There's no doubt that we now have far more depth than we have had in years. As has been said by a few in the media, we have the best list of under 22s in the AFL.

Feels good that's there's a big later of young players like Gould Ling McDonald and Campbell who I want to fit in and can't and some experienced heads like Sinclair Gray and Clarke you'd also expect to play.

We say it every year but we have some real depth. Come mid season we bemoan our lack of it but we look like we can carry a dozen injuries at any given moment.
