I know.

Which again, I look at Bazzo and see him fitting in to our defence much better. Can play man on man defence, can intercept well, and offers good rebound by foot when the opportunity presents itself. Should easily be considered a natural replacement for Gardiner.
Why are we replacing Dizzy? He is easily our best shutdown tall defender

Payne, Bazzo and Andrews in the same backline?
I’m all for that, the next year or two I see Payne as the logical replacement for Adams/Andrews to take the 2 biggest key forwards. I’d see Bazzo as the replacement for Gardiner to take the 3rd tall but can play a bit taller and smaller.

I’m not sure I agree with that, Gardiner hasn’t really shown he can shutdown a genuine tall forward like Adams has against Hawkins, also Starce would be our preferred option to shutdown a small/utility.

Still need to make provisions for the possibility you may have to.
Dizzy is another who appears to be constantly playing hurt which may ultimately affect the time he has left in the game.

Dizzy has shutdown players like Franklin Betts Greene he’s the player that gets the most damaging forwards small or tall

He’s not big enough for the biggest and best key forwards and Starce has gone past him in terms of taking the Greene type players. I do like Gardiner but if we have players that can do the same lockdown jobs in the team then swapping Gardiner with someone who is more able offensively and in the air might be a good move for the balance of the backline.

Dizzy offers flexibility. An opponent isn't going to have 2 talls and 4 smalls or 3 and 3 for the entire game. You need someone who can cover both

And I think you could get someone who covers both while also being more damaging and less error prone. Don’t get me wrong Gardiner is a good player and I can’t see anyone going past him in the next year or so but I do see it as a position that could be improved.

I'm yet to be convinced that Payne can be a consistent first-choice player. Good player to have on the list no doubt, and he's still young so not writing him off yet. But I'd be stunned if he took dizzy's spot.

I need to see better defensive application consistently and more games where he takes some marks - that stuff is more concerning to me than his occasional turnovers by foot.

More likely to be replacing Adams in 3 years, than Gardiner, IMO. We're not drafting for our 2022 team. In 2025, we'd want a developed replacement for Adams, who will be turning 32. Gardiner is two years younger.

As to whether he is best 22, he's a perennial top 10 finisher in the B&F. If some fans don't rate him, the coaches clearly do.

Hi guys,

As a Hawthorn supporter would you think this offer to Brisbane is worthy:

Hawthorn pick 21 and 24 this year and future 2nd round for
Brisbane 14 and 18 this year and future 4th round.

Brisbane receive 200 more overall points and additional points next year for Ashcroft?

What you reckon

I think we'll want our first 3 picks as early as possible this year

21 and 24 for 18 and 41 and some possible later pick swaps.
Done!

I don't think we need to sacrifice our hand this year to gather points for next year, especially since we still have our first, second and fourth for next year (and if we're short on points next year, we have 2023 picks at that point). In a situation where we're giving up both our first round picks, I'd think we'd want at least a first and a second round pick back this year.

Was just at the Year 12 ceremony at my son’s school and Arthur Jones spoke super well about the indigenous tie he designed and picked up the award for top of VET studies. A very popular kid at school, did well and now rocketing up the draft boards. Wouldn’t surprise me if he goes in the top 25, even though he couldn’t crack the WA u19s team until late.

No. Our top brass have said they want to address the lack of top 20 picks on our roster from the past few years, and this won't let us do that.

That's a downgrade of 2 first rounders for one future second round. If you compare it to previous live trades, we paid a future second (got back a future fourth) for a one position swap to get Deven Robertson. Similarly Collingwood paid a future 1st + 4th for 24,30 and future 4th last year. Depending on whose still available on draft board and how clubs rate them, we may get a much higher premium on 14+18 in draft night compared to +200 points.

If you want both of our picks, your pick 5 or future first needs to be in play in some combination. That'll make us consider the trade for sure.

EDIT: Looking at the players available, it still doesn't make sense for us to go for one high pick compared to going for 2 picks in teens. If we were desperate for one particular player, I see us try that pick 5 + change trade with you, but I think we'll keep our hand and go drafting this time.

What’s Bazzo even like as a defender has he played on Amiss or Darcy
He really slowed down JVR in the Colts Grand Final, JVR had 3 goals in the first quarter before Bazzo was moved onto him.

My main point about replacing Gardiner was that if one of Adams/Payne can shutdown the opposition best genuine key forward we then put Andrews on the resting ruck/least dangerous tall so he can zone off and intercept. We then have Starc/Answerth to go to the most dangerous smalls/utility. Who does Gardiner go to? Sure he could shutdown the 4th or 5th most dangerous forward but at that point we might as well have someone that can intercept and rebound while still not having to defend a very dangerous forward. Another point is that the 3rd tall defender/interceptor can be one of the most impactful positions on the field, look at Ridley, Sicily, Lever, Stewart, Haynes and the list could go on, if we could add someone who could turn out to be that then we should imo.

Which draft boards?

I can genuinely say I don’t recall reading his name.

The first half of that clip was Dangerfield like - but the bad parts of Dangerfield.
Rather him take metres and turn it over 60 metres away rather than trying the sideways outside of the boot stuff and turning it over midfield.
Coach that out of him.

Cleaned it up a little bit in the back half. Loves that spin and collect it.
Can certainly find it.
On that clip alone - I’m 50/50 on him.
