I'll back the recruiters on whatever decisions they make, but I will say this. Modern history is littered with players who get shifted to the half back who weren't recruited for that role and flourish. It appears a relatively easy position to play and fill. Not sure spending high end picks on half backs is wise...

A few examples being Rich, Jayden Short, Nick Hind, Aaron Hall, Jack Ziebell, Starcevich, Sicily, Bailey Dale, Caleb Daniel etc.
St
Rayner fail is very harsh, would you say that if he hadnt done his knee, i obviously still have high hopes he will be a 200 game player. Would he be a pass if taken at pick 6?
I think our drafting has been a bit hit and miss lately and worthy of criticism

But if you are going to say Henry Smith is a fail, after one year on the list as a still growing 204cm forward without a senior game and with barely a ressies game because of covid, it's time to get some perspective

I doubt we'd be wiling to trade away any of our 2022 picks to move up.
Personally, don't think the club will be looking at any of those options with our final pick (if still available) and instead will be most likely drafting a developing KPP (preferably KPD) or swingman to help increase the depth of our key position stocks in the future at the football club.
Yeah it would have to be a live trade scenario. Would have to tick plenty of boxes including considerable points for next year.

Probably would work more if it's Richmond or another club coming at us though, and that's more likely to happen next year.

I'd add Ely simply because he looks a lot closer to being gone than making the team. Obviously he didn't come on as hoped but it was an upside gamble. If you take the safer option every time you end up with a bunch of vanilla mids unless you're picking in the top 10, since they're the easiest to project.

Think it's important to note the players that were selected after Ely aswell as the 2018 AFL draft wasn't exactly the deepest draft. The only players selected after Ely that look like solid AFL players right now are James Jordan, Nick Hind and Bobby Hill.

Our recruiters likely took a gamble knowing the talent in the mid-bottom half of that draft wasn't all that great. Would love to know the players we were linked with.

Colin Young
He's probably cursing he will miss out on his cut after convincing Freo to offer Johnson a massive contract in a couple of years to lure him over

Targeted those quick players who can really impact a game. Something we lacked all year.

Interested to see what we do with #41.
Also from Danny Daly's radio interview - if the right talent slips, we'll take them. Otherwise, he said it is needs based and mentioned a tall forward or defender in that context.

Must be already planning about taking Johnson away from Freo and then bring him back again later. Double dip !

Well it's time for round 2, of all the KPP left on the board Rhett Bazzo is the clear best for me although probably unlikely he gets to us. Dean I guess would be next although I'm not particularly high on any other KPP from here on out. Will be interesting to see if we stick to our guns if there's a real big slider available.

Danny Daly on radio this morning:

- Wilmot had about 5 other clubs after him
- Wilmot probably thought we'd take him at pick 20
- drafted Lohmann as a longer term projects- like his athletic traits and potential
- thought Lohmann was in the 20-30 range for most clubs
- didn't sound like the vic players would come up to Brisbane before Christmas (I might have misunderstood this bit)
- Dan McStay had already offered to organise training and get togethers over Christmas for Victorian players, including the draftees.

What a bloke.

Your uneducated & opinion that our "wasteful pick trading" getting you cranky is what I am talking about mate. I have a grip and also raise eyebrows with some decisions the club makes, however I dont dump on our guys like you have done without really knowing anything about what is going on inside the inner sanctum of the club. Players are a big part of the club but there are many others (some who you have had a big crack at) who also work hard and contribute to making our club what it is today. In my opinion, the dumping you have handed out is just not warranted and I am saying so just as much as you put them down.

I understand you are rather closely connected to the club and may know some of these guys personally. However I have not attacked anyone's character or integrity, my criticism has been on some of the decisions made, in particular the loss of value when trading picks and the lack of agility on draft night. These are rather popular opinions and I don't see that as being unreasonable. Further, attacking these decisions is similar to how we might react to our players and coaches performance on field. The recruiting/ trading team is not immune to such criticism.

I can, however, accept that the timing of my criticism was poor. I should, in hindsight have kept my powder dry for another time and focused more on what the new recruits will add to our club.

By the way, jjami15 can confirm this, Kai Lohman was the kid I’d hope we’d get at 41, though I did say to jjami15 I didn’t believe he’d slip that far.

If we trade back from 41, maybe we look at mature age defender Noah Pegoraro out of WA.

Same, I wanted him at 41. I wasn't even aware of him until we were linked to him in an article the other day. Went and checked him out and noticed his great combine results, also that he had his fans on the draft board. Seems like a high risk/reward sort of pick, but I was all for it. We don't really have anyone like him on our list.

I wasn't sure at the time about using a first rounder on him, but I'm over that. Everyone's been saying all year the recruiters (and draft followers) will have pretty different looking draft boards after the first handful of picks. Can't blow up now that's proven to be the case.

I'm pretty keen to hear the rest of the Intel you got at the function last night once the draft is over!

If we were looking for a tall forward or defender, thought Ballenden probably was worth keeping on the rookie list for one more year. With it clearly stated (although being dropped to the rookie list for 2021 likely an indication) to him that he needed to do XYZ. Perhaps Lions thought they might have been able to pick up a tall KPP such as Gibcus, JVR or Aleer with one of their first round picks last night. I think a fast midfielder is/was a need.

I am still bullish on Payne just needs to be injury free, and given a good run at it. Adams is showing good form and hopefully has overcome his leg/foot issues, McStay has found his role and hope Eric returns 100% mid season, so arguably KPP stocks are not too urgent. McStay, Hipwood, Andrews, Payne and Fullarton all reasonably young.

Cheers for that. Do you recall which radio program that was on?

The Experts, the Gurus, the watchers and those that just like to comment - Do get some of their choices wrong, in fact there is some work by FoxSports that shows the majority of time even the Clubs get it wrong as well.

Chance of Drafting a 200 gamer.

Pick 1-2:
69 per cent
Pick 3-5: 38 per cent
Pick 6-10: 28 per cent
Pick 11-20: 27 per cent
Pick 21-30: 13 per cent
Pick 31-50: 15 per cent
Pick 51-70: 9 per cent

The thing that interests me is the meltdown the supporters have when the players they chose don't get picked and the ones who were not even mentioned do get chosen, it's like the club has a responsibility for stroking some supporters ego just so they can say "I told you he would be picked".

I wish we had as much discussion across the league on player development and coaching as I believe thats where you can make a difference. You can have a 'churn and burn' scenario and just run huge academies hoping to find a good one or have inplace a development system that 'breeds' good quality players, not stars, but good quality. I'm backing the Lions structure with Fagan that we have that right. We had a 10 to 12 year period of misery but now we are good now, we are a top team, top club - with a little luck injury wise we could be the very top AND we do have several more years up the top few coming and the 'cliff of age' is a long way off yet if next years draft goes how we expect. We took bottom age kids last year and have again knowing most likely we wont see them for a couple of seasons. All clubs that have sustained success loose the up and coming players out of frustration from not getting regular top 22 position. This Lions, these new Fagan Lions, are set for sustained success and drafting to fit that.

Given the comments re. a tall being sought at 41, and given there is no move up to an earlier pick, I would expect that Bazzo, Dean and Williams (the most mentioned, still available, talls) to be likely gone by then.
Does that leave a possibility of another GWV Rebel in Josh Rentsch ....... Morrish medal winner, 197cm 100kg Tall Fwd.

Anyone seen him play?

(Couldn't find any vision (read: Highlights video) .......... so might just be a Lions type player ...... :))
