2021 Lions Off-season

There's the possibility that a deal with McCluggage has been done in principle but not announced. I actually think that's a stronger possibility than Hugh leaving.

The dead zone for footy clubs is Dec-Jan. Very little gain in sharing good news at that time. Announcing a big signing in Dec-Jan will get forgotten quickly. A big announcement in the lead-up to the pre-season comp gets fans engaged and excited.

To back that up...

IIRC McCluggage's last re-signing was announced right before the season started.

Rayner's first extension too.

It's a fairly common model that we follow, so we can wait and see.

And Rayner's latest contract extension was announced a few days after the launch of the 2021 "I am Lion" membership campaign

Organisations stage manage this stuff to get the biggest bang for buck.

I remember thinking that funny at the time because of how often we announce things in the lead-up to the season.

How Daniher will help the lions this year.

Interesting analysis, particularly the Ben Brown stuff. From a Lions perspective definitely want to see the Demons stay or drop this year but can understand how he would straighten them up and improve their forward structure. However, the part about Ben Brown needing decent delivery to excel makes you wonder how the Dees midfielders will complement his abilities. Their forward line has functioned abysmally over the last two years and their entries have to be among the worst in the AFL. The only real decent kick they have is Salem (new guy Rivers is okay) and they seem to rarely bring him up the ground. Part of the Dees poor entries may have been due to lack of a definitive target but I tend to think their poor kicking played just as big a role and with Brown's game style you can't just sit a ball on his head and except him to mark it, needs it to his advantage or to open space. Will be watching them with interest.

Good for our NSW supporters in general given the Lions aren’t playing in the home and away season in Sydney. If I’m not mistaken Ironmonger lives in Canberra.

IIRC, our last pre-season game in Canberra was in 2010. Might have been Fev's first time in Lions colours. Now it will be Joe's too. Hopefully that's where the comparisons start and end.

It is also a better preparation than playing the Suns twice.

Can't say I see that logic about it being good for NSW supporters given the Lions aren't playing in Sydney. I remember you complaining about games in Ballarat/Bendigo. They're both less than two hours from Melbourne. Canberra is over three hours from Sydney. Either this is an irrelevancy to most NSW supporters or those rural Victorian games are a lot better to Melbourne supporters than I'm led to believe.

That's not where I was going, but hey sure, seeing as though you are wanting to agitate and start something; sure, how ****** is it for NSW Lions supporters that they have to drive to that hole in Canberra, ignoring the fact that the Brisbane Bears and Fitzroy didn't merge with a NSW club.

I just find it massively hypocritical of you to claim that a Canberra game is in anyway relevant to NSW supporters given the air you spend on how bad games closer than that are for Melbourne supporters. Either we should all be happy or view the games as irrelevant to where we are at best.

Given I tagged Ironmonger's name in as someone who I believe lives in Canberra, I think you can see where I was going, but if you think that I believe that I expect those Lions fans that live in Byron Bay or Tweed Heads to be celebrating the news, then you're being a dick.

FWIW, I couldn't give an absolute shit about any Lions fan that lives in NSW or where any meaningless pre-season game is for that matter and I take back anything I said about it being a bonus, so carry on with being a big man with your clique liking mates.

If you'd said ACT I'd 100% agree with you.

That's the first mention of either of those locations so no, you're just trying to pretend that's in any way related to what I pointed out. I explicitly mentioned a location, one that houses over 50% of NSW residents so can be considered representative of NSW. Why not just use it, unless you're concerned it won't make me actually sound like a dick?

Heh. Well I guessed you admitted you were incorrect so that could be tough enough to resort to being insulting. Especially when the alternative would just be not complaining about rural Victoria games.

Ran into Fullerton and Mathieson this afternoon. Tommy is looking a little lite to be playing key position/ruck role. Might get knocked around a little.

OK someone has been doing some clever design. Check out the subtle watermarks in this 2021 reversible training jumper, also now up on the Lions website:

I'm also a massive fan of the other training gear this year:

I was wondering if he and or Ballenden had put on any significant muscle in the off season. From your comment it appears to me that Daniher and more likely McStay with his leap are the likely 'part time' rucks. I can't see Tom making the team for the first few rounds unless McStay's form is poor and or Daniher not yet right, which appears unlikely as he is training well according to training reports from BF posters.

Daniher, Hipwood and Fullarton all have a very similar build and muscle mass. It’s not like Daniher is significantly bigger.

McStay, while undersized, has the build to play against other teams second ruck.

Look at West Coast last year, playing Oscar Allen as their backup ruck, and he’s a little shorter than McStay.

Not sure if these figures are correct - Website current??
Fullarton 200cm 98kg
Daniher 200cm 95kg
Hipwood 204cm 90kg
