Article from the AFL website regarding Marcus Adams returning from injuries of the past couple of seasons.

Big year for Marcus Adams as he enters the final year of his contract at the club to prove his worth IMO.

OK someone has been doing some clever design. Check out the subtle watermarks in this 2021 reversible training jumper, also now up on the Lions website:

I'm also a massive fan of the other training gear this year:

Mine arrived today and looks great. Unfortunately, the tags are on the Fitzroy side. Really don’t want to cut them off, but looks a little bit silly with them on. Fantastic looking jumper though.

Would be a huge blunder to play him in front of Jack Payne, IMO.

Yeah I still think long-term performance wise, Payne will become a better defender & player then Adams will every become.

However over at the training reports page on page 19 I think, Ralphy2017 stated that he has been suffering from some virus similar to Glandular Fever this pre-season therefore the club has been reducing its fitness loads for the time-being therefore probably putting him out for the two pre-season games we have given our pre-season matches start in a month.

That makes me to believe that if Adams can stay fit during the rest of the training & matches and also performs at a very high standard of performance during those matches, I wouldn't be surprised if Adams is selected in our best 22 for the match against the Swans (R1) and especially against the Cats in R2 if the club feels like they need a 3rd Tall Defender in their D50.

All I'm saying though it is so bloody nice to have so much depth in our playing list these days now as I feel like at least 30 players at our club are generally Best 22 material at the other clubs across the other 17 clubs

Or (if competing for one spot) we play whichever of the two is better?

Adams is a role player. Payne can play that role as well now, and has star potential. Come September we will be far better off with another 20 games under Jack's belt.

I genuinely considered getting one, the cost was somewhat prohibitive. That and I finished playing footy last year, and I would normally wear it at training. So now I don't know when I would wear it

Come September we will be better off with whichever of the two is the better player. Jack may well cement a spot in the backline, time will tell.

Edit: Just to clarify, I'm a big fan of Payne, but lets not write off Adams. He's not a VFL depth top up, he's an AFL fullback that can successfully negate & wrestle with the monster forwards.

Not entirely sure I see Adams the same way others do. I think he's significantly more versatile than Payne. Faster, more agile, and I'd argue his skills are better too. His intercept marking doesn't quite match Payne's, but from what I've seen so far I would have Adams in the team ahead of Payne assuming they are both fully fit.

I think it's important to remember with Adams that we still have only really seen glimpses. If we compare him to the other long-term injured players we've traded in recently - Linc and Ah Chee in particular come to mind - there is proof that it takes almost a full season of uninterrupted footy for players to get their touch back. Marcus hasn't had that at the club yet, and in the longest streak he did have in 2019, he seemed to look better and better by the week.

Whether his body will hold up or not is a big question mark, but on talent he's quite comfortably best 22 for me ahead of Payne. Although I'm not entirely sure you couldn't play both of them alongside Dizzy and Harris - it'd be a tall backline, but both Marcus & Dizzy can play smaller.

I wouldn't say Adam's skills are better, in fact his up and under kicking is my biggest cconcern about his game.
He was such a beautiful penetrating kick when he first come on the scene at the Bulldogs.
Maybe injuries haven’t helped because he isn’t so much now.

keep saying who would you rat
I hope that Payne takes on the role for the majority of the year, but understand if it takes him a little bit of time to get up to fitness and Adams plays the first few rounds. Definitely prefer that to burning Payne out
Yes that's my concern, the young guy in an attempt to cement a spot comes back too early

One of the things I like about BF is the diverse views, however I can't see Dizzy, Harris, Payne and Adams all in the same team, not regularly. I see Payne after 5 games (especially the Prelim) having much more upside then Adams who has had around 38 AFL games over some 5 or 6 years. Apparently Payne had some type of shin issue and missed all of his first year (2018) and some issues with 2019, so his development has probably been a little longer than first anticipated. At 21 still believe his best footy is to come.
Payne is 198cm, Adams 192cm. Payne 100kg, Adams approx 94kg, and after watching the Prelim: I would be fairly confident in stating Payne appears more agile and faster than Adams. Adams demonstrated his lack of agility against Hawthorne last year when Burgoyne embarrassed him.
The key issue is if Payne has overcome his reported virus he can perform a role now, and the more games the better you think he would get. IF Payne was left out of the team this year due to an injury prone Adams...well you could not blame him and other young guys from seeking opportunities elsewhere, that's footy I guess.
I don't think Marcus will be extended once his current contract expiries (reckon he is on a lot more $ than Payne).

For team balance, I’d rather two genuine KPPs in Andrews and Payne plus Gardiner as a hybrid tall. But if Adams is playing better footy than Payne, then I have no problem in him getting a game and us playing two hybrid tall defenders alongside Andrews. Adams has the capability to play tall, as he showed against Hawkins two seasons ago.

I do think it is a bit premature to be writing off Adams. If he has another bad year with injuries, then I think we probably need to review his spot on the list but he remains the same first 22 level player as he was when we signed him. We don’t know what continuity might do to his game because he’s never really had it.

Honestly Burgoyne would have embarrassed all 4 of our tall defenders so the race to single our Adam's is laughable to me. Why don't the same posters wax lyrical about his game again Tom Hawkins.

Getting games into Payne is all well and good but that doesn't mean he will be better than Adam who is only 27 and not about to retire.

At the moment Marcus Adam is the only one of our defenders who can go toe to toe with the bigger forwards. Obviously he needs to stay healthy to show that but our other guys can't do the job. Dizzy gets caught out and Payne is still a far way off being able to do the job and Harris as great as he is isn't suited to that role.
