I will be surprised if Adams plays round one
Think he needs a good run in the VFL and when his chance comes in the seniors he has to play well enough to hold his spot
Not long to go till we find out how the coaches view our best 22 players
Lots of players fighting for a few spots so will be interesting to see who gets the nod.

He might not play R1 but boy if he is fit & firing and Payne isn't ready, I would be automatically putting him in the Best 22 for R2 against Geelong as the 3rd Tall Defender besides Andrews & Gardiner cause their forward line of Hawkins, Cameron & others will be quite a fight for our defenders.

I always laugh at comments like this.

Harris Andrews gets embarrassed by small
I agree, which is why i said that he should only play agaist the gorillas. He should never have been matched up against Burgoyn. Looked like our coaches thought he was B22 so tried to fit him in our team despite no obvious matchup for him.

Honestly Burgoyne would have embarrassed all 4 of our tall defenders so the race to single our Adam's is laughable to me. Why don't the same posters wax lyrical about his game again Tom Hawkins.

Getting games into Payne is all well and good but that doesn't mean he will be better than Adam who is only 27 and not about to retire.

At the moment Marcus Adam is the only one of our defenders who can go toe to toe with the bigger forwards. Obviously he needs to stay healthy to show that but our other guys can't do the job. Dizzy gets caught out and Payne is still a far way off being able to do the job and Harris as great as he is isn't suited to that role.
Yes BF posters have mentioned his good game against Hawkins in 2019 (I actually think at the time Hawkins was slightly out of form). Adams has played some very ordinary games, such as the one against Richmond at the MCG where Riewoldt kicked three goals on him in the first Q and he had to be moved to another forward. The reality is we don't know if a 36 year old Burgoyne would have embarrassed Payne or any other of the defenders but the fact is he did to Adams. Whether that is laughable when BF posters note it, is a matter of opinion and the good thing about this site is we can all post them.

I would rather Harris take the so called monster forwards, and Lester in the team, more reliable on last years form and does not suffer the injuries Adams does. IMO If fit, and I am not sure how long it takes to recover from a virus like GF (Berry took some time) Payne is ahead of Adams, and if he is not he is bloody close enough to get games into him for beyond 2021.

It might depend if Payne has recovered from whatever virus he had. Probably know a little more for practice game against Suns and trial game against GWS.

Harris on the so called monsters is a guarantee for him to get towelled up. He’s our best defender in the last 15 years but he’s not a defender who can wrestle someone like Hawkins.

His strength is to play off his man and help out other defenders.

Adams is the only guy on our list to play that role currently and to single out the Richmond game shows you mustn’t have watched too closely as we got smashed all over the field especially in the midfield.
On exposed form Adams is a much better defender than Payne who’s played all of 5 games.

Mal Michael, Matty Scarlett and Darren Glass would have had goals kicked on them that night.

Brett C, If you are referring to 'night' for the Richmond game at the 'G' in 2019,it was actually an afternoon game and Riewoldt kicked 3 goals early on Adams so he was moved to another forward. Simple as that.

Don't understand your logic, that no one else on the Lions list can take the so called monster forwards.
Except for round 1 in 2020 when Adams got towelled up, he did not play another game in 2020 due to injury, yet Harris and the backline seemed to handle the so called monster forwards for the whole season to get us into a Prelim: So, if Adams is the only guy to take on the role of taking the monster forwards, we must have been lucky to make a Prelim: without him.

I reckon it won't be too long before Payne (who according to Lions webpage represented Australian in discus and apparently played some rugby) can wrestle the so called monster forwards, not that I think there is that many of them with the likes of Buddy, Hipwood, Naughton, the King brothers etc etc.

I think one of two things will happen, Payne recovers from whatever virus he had/has and he is in the team from round 1 or 2 and is backed in by the coaches (as he will make errors) and given a fair crack he cements his spot for the year and possibly future years
OR
Adams is selected over Payne and Payne leaves the club at the end of the year, to seek opportunities, and Adams is extended.

The second big and or tall defender debate behind Harris is an interesting one.
Seeing Harris is not really a lock down defender it is all about team defense.
Also very important that our midfield & forwards provide enough pressure upfield so delivery into oppositions forward line not great
We finished top two the last two years so what ever plan the coaches went with in defense got good results. But we need to improve.
In 2019 Adams played 10 games in a row from round 16 so coaches had him as our top 3 KPD
In 2020 Adams only played round 1 but once again coaches decided at that time he was top 3 KPD
Payne is behind in preparation for 2021 so not great for his chances to get this spot early in the year, although still 8 weeks to go.
If Adams or Payne comes in one of Birchall, Lester more than likely makes way
Because Adams missed all of 2020 bar 1 game i would like to see him play a few games in VFL to see how he goes.
For me the important thing come round one is both Adams & Payne are available for selection then and for the remainder of the year.
Would not surprise me that neither Adams or Payne make the round one team but if both fit and healthy will play an important role in 2021

EDIT: should read 5 weeks to go not 8

From Adams interview through the week, I took it as though he himself believes he will start the Year in the VFL, with the amount of time he has spent out of the game he doesn’t really know where he sits.
And with Payne having a couple of weeks out due to a virus, I don’t believe puts him behind Adams because Adams has spent a full 12 months on the sidelines, and is coming from a fair way back in a game sense.

No doubt in 2019 that Adams was ahead of Payne and Lester.
Lester played well for the most part in 2020, so for me IF Payne not ready for round 1 then I would rather Lester in the team. Like you I believe Adams has to earn his spot via the VFL (IF there is a comp: with COVID). I wonder can Answerth push for Brichalls spot?

Interesting point about VFL.
Can't see the AFL paying for hubs for all the VFL teams.
Could be another weird season for fringe players.
On a positive note they don't start till April 17 so maybe they all have their covid jabs by then

Jabs not supposed to complete to Oct.. So you say Dec-Jan :)
Be interesting if Footy players jump up the queue. Not sure that go down well if the jump past hotel workers :)
We now getting less now as the EU complained.
CSL hopes to make over a million a week. 32 million doses before general public under 50 get. So do the Maths be a while
You assume that be closer to end of season. So if we keep leaking at hotels you assume Hubs back again.
Some players and Fagan will have a choice to get his beforehand in phase 2A.
Also take into account side effects even minor, Clubs have to plan for these as you could loose a day or more after the jab. Or not be 100%

I really hope the Victorian Premier can get on top of hotel quarantine. Whilst NSW have had problems they are also taking the bulk of returned citizens, we need Andrews to get it right so we don't have the WA and QLD and now SA Premiers locking the borders every time there is an outbreak because that means no AFL or AFL in hubs and I'm not sure some of the senior players are up for it again.

My last line comment was a bit tongue in cheek. April of course is too early. Should have added a emoji

However having said that it would not surprise me if professional sport that require regular interstate/overseas travel find they slot into phase 2a even though they are not specifically mentioned. All will depend on how Australia confines the virus and how rollout and supply go.
So that's after 1a (up to 1.4million) i assume that number is 700,000 x 2 jabs, then 1b (14.8mill)
i know a lot will disagree but i can see it as a possibility.

Don't count on it..

Footy players prob jump the queue being essential workers or something.
Although still will not happen to season starts..
So be interesting if you want to get players done. Everyone will react different although do you need players done during the season?
Even a couple of days can effect preperation.
Maybe wait for bye week you need to go again 28 days later and the AFL adds another bye?

Like most vaccinations some people get nothing at all

For both vaccines, the overwhelming majority of reports relate to injection-site reactions (sore arm for example) and generalised symptoms such as ‘flu-like’ illness, headache, chills, fatigue (tiredness), nausea (feeling sick), fever, dizziness, weakness, aching muscles, and rapid heartbeat. Generally, these happen shortly after the vaccination and are not associated with more serious or lasting illness.

These types of reactions reflect the normal immune response triggered by the body to the vaccines. They are typically seen with most types of vaccine and tend to resolve within a day or two.
