Some interesting free agents next year

McStay, Maynard, Moore, JDG, Miller, Sicily, Brayshaw, Amon, Heeney, Barrass, Dale, Daniel

Tipping one will be a Blue end of next year
We'll need to be be heavy on the delistings/tradings if we want to make room for another A-grade free agent - especially considering Walsh is out of contract.

Think we will have plenty of room
6 players on our list had to take pay cuts just to fit in Cerra. How on earth are we going to fit in another A grade free agent, considering Walsh will also be re-signing on close to twice what he's currently already on?

Rumoured that players took a pay cut. We also had enough coin for Hewett and Young

Do the maths

Average wage is around 350-400K

Newnes, Ed will probably gone next year. 2 of Cuners, Setters, Marchbank, Willo under the pump

Martin and Gov front ended

That's around 1- 1.4 mil

2 draftees, even if the played every game, 200K combined

Leaves 800K to a Mil

McStay, Maynard, Dale, Barrass Amon won't command that sort of coin

Gov will be 4 years into his 5 year deal, there's no front ended contract in that anymore.

Fox Footy/The Age had Jack Martin at an average wage of $600k a year with 1 mil in his first year. 3 years into his 5 year deal and I doubt there's much front ending left there too.

Let's say for good measure that we somehow still end up with 800k left. Walsh signed his contract extension back in 2018 after just playing 4 career games, now he's a top 2 favourite for the Brownlow and the best young mid in the league.

I'll let you do the maths but at least half of the remaining cash will be gone on his re-signing.

Both Gov and Martin signed on front ended contracts, fact

Walsh has already extended his draftee contract, so it's not as if we need to increase his wage by 800K

LOB's average wage now on rookie money

It ain't hard to work out

Just because contracts are tight one year doesn't mean they will be the next. If clubs are managing contracts well enough they should be loading contracts so they are paying close to their total player payments each year, which would free them up down the track. Pay everyone most of their contracts over the first few years then pay them little over the next few years. We have no idea where our cap is. When we brought guys like Gov and Martin in they probably helped us reach our minimum total player payments and are likely mostly paid out now.

I'm not disagreeing that Gov and Martin are on front ended contracts, but surely in their 4th and 3rd years into their contract it would've evened out into the average value by now?

In regards to Walsh, his contract extension in 2018 wouldn't have been for more than around 4-500k a year - in 2023 he'll be on around 1 mil.

This things can be tweaked each year, as Arrow says if we elect to delist 4-5 players on a average of $350-$400k and basically go the draft and bring in a bunch of kids then that will be free up space for a free agent & Walsh, maybe Williams can have his contract adjusted eg back ended without knowing current structure of that arrangement.

Never that easy - it's base salary + match payments.

Marchbank, Cunningham, McGov, Setters would be on base salary not extract full value of their contracts.

Some players have low base salary but high match payments and vice versa.....no one really knows.. figures media report are full potential value.

So at worse we only have to find 500K for Walsh, Ed and Newnes money more than covers that, plus change of around 200-300K, more than enough for draftees

Add another 700-800K from 2 of Cuners, Marchbank, Willo, Setters. Martin and Gov degreasing contracts.

800K?

McStay, Dale, Maynard, Amon, Barrass won't command that sort of money

Was reported quite a while ago by Mitch Cleary.

Wouldn't worry too much about it, reckon it happens plenty across the league. Particularly through what is an uncertain time.

As has been said, could very well be offset by what comes off the list over the next year or two.

Also, expect a significant increase in the cap if we get a full season in next year (along with increase in list size).
