You make it sound like the groundskeeper thought it a good idea so the club went with it. You have zero idea of the complexities and permutations involved in player contracts. At least now you have something to moan about regardless of any fresh endeavours the club initiates in the new season.
Ok then that’s your entitled opinion. I’d dare say the length of Cripps’ contract would make more than not supporters unhappy. I’m not moaning, I’m a realist.

We saw his value at times through the middle last season, but he has been injured for large chunks of this year and therefore not able to play the role we'd probably like him to.

Fair to say the same could be said for many at the club - out injury list is and has been through the roof all year.

I dare say we'll see a different Jack in a different role if and when fully fit again.
Unfortunately on cue - injured again

Sorry buddy, you clearly don't follow US sports who are the masters of cap management. Ed is just a stocking filler and it is very important he goes last, we need to keep our fire power of available salary cap until we have surveyed the market and signed free agents and/or concluded trades.

CB
Imo calling US sports the masters of cap management is a stretch.
A fair portion of their sports operate with a soft cap and even still with exemptions, stretch provisions etc they have far too many 'get out of gaol free cards' built into the system to warrant such a glowing appraisal IMO.

Ed would effectively be on the veterans minimum, he's our Dwight or Melo to Sam Walsh's LeBron at this point.

SPS not playing today. If he was traded to Freo, and Cerra to Carlton, how is the following: SPS to Freo for their 2nd, Cerra to CFC for our 1st...
Nup will be our first plus for Cerra. Could be first plus SPS with a third back, about the best we could do IMO. Not playing SPS with our outs suggests he is not getting a contract. Hard to demand even a second under that scenario.

8 changes is plenty. Let the new coach analyse the kids and make decisions on them in 2022.
Different coach and attitude makes a huge impact on talented individuals.

After watching Durdin and Honey tonight (not forgetting Owies) we simply cannot give another contract to Betts.... every game he gets is another wasted game of development into some kids with real potential and a whole lot of years ahead of them.

Retain Betts in an off field role of some kind... but surely surely the club has to draw the line here.

Honey and Durdin are the future, if Betts gets another contract I will be hugely disappointed.

I hope we don’t get rid of O’Brien.

I’d rather keep him over Dow or SPS. Quick, durable wingman with above average disposal. Just needs to gain some strength and confidence.

He’s always getting gang tackled and ragdolled hey aha

Our kids have no value so no point trading them unless we don’t want them in the group. I’ll be really surprised if SPS is at the club next year and unfortunately he has absolutely stuff all value. If he isn’t tied to another trade then anything we get inside ~40 would be reasonable atm so I’m hoping he becomes steak knives or stays.

Watching yesterday I can certainly see why we would be super keen on Riccardi and Cerra. The club would be very brave or very stupid to back this midfield in again next season without trying to add a ready to go good player to it.

I know we need some talls but as you say our midfield needs urgent help - it’s probably the 18th ranked midfield and we desperately need someone like a Cerra. Freo takes on West Coast without Fyfe and Brayshaw. Let’s hope Cerra shows his naysayers on this Board why we absolutely need to get him in.

Picking up an 18 year old midfielder isn’t going to help much in 2022 - picking up Hewett AND Cerra will absolutely help.

This is my worry.if they are anything like Dow, LOB or SPS they may not even help until 2025.

I would have signed Curnow up for another year, I feel he still has the desire and fitness to go around again and he's one of the very few who offer on field voice and leadership. He's the old player we should be keeping, the rest I am not fussed about.

Happy for Newnes to be retained as depth, but we’re not going anywhere if he continues to be in the starting 22.

Williamson has regressed significantly. Of all the players in the same age group (Dow, SPS, LOB, Williamson), he’s at the bottom and I don’t see much in him going forward. Happy to be proven wrong but he’s incredibly disappointing to watch.

Dow has shown considerably growth on his deficiencies and I’d be loathe to lose him. Also would rather keep than let go of LOB.

Think SPS is gone but new coach will have final say.

Plowman - his good games are far outweighed by the bad. He’ll continue to get games because we are so sufficiently under resourced in that department.

Cerra is a gun kid

On CPH1877 using BigFooty.com mobile app
We would be using pick 6(?) in hope we could draft someone of Cerras caliber.

It’ll be like that quality midfielder Austin though Williams would become.

Luckily Kennedy has come on and is that extra inside midfielder to take the load of Cripps

Walsh, Cerra and Cuningham with the class.

"Cerra IS a gun kid" was verbatim my thought in response. Yes we lose some years of longevity grabbing Cerra instead of a under 18/19 "gun" but Cerra's proven to have the goods and no junior no matter how good can say that. One might add that Cerra could help us more than a gun kid next year although that assumes we can be helped next year and if you treat this year as a reflection on the playing stocks (and not on the injury list or the coaching performance or whatever else) a pessimist might think no man of woman born could make impact enough to raise our performance in a way that could drag us out of the mire even a little ways. Not thinking we recruit Macbeth, more along the lines of that fella Hawthorn were rumoured to be looking at during the Peter Hudson era (Church billboard "What would you do if God came to Hawthorn?" Graffiti "Move Hudson to centre half forward"). Now if we could just get them to nominate for the draft (by "them" I mean "the Trinity" not Macbeth and/or Hudson) we could probably get them with 1 pick under the father-son rule and pull off a recruiting coup to rival, nay surpass, the South Australian trinity of 1986 of Bradley/Kernahan/Motley!

Just focusing on your comment about our kids having no value, anything under 40 would be reasonable for SPS, but what’s wrong with picks in the 40s or even 50s for others?

Those picks still hold value, can be bundled up with others or on traded to clubs who need points, if we don’t see certain players being part of the future, I hope we can at least get something for them.
