Appreciate the info as always MG :thumbsu:

Exciting times to be a Sainter!

Higgins/Crouch/Highmore will be excellent additions

Still think Gresham is our most dynamic mid - the way he makes space & cuts the lines is all class

Can I link us to the thread to save us having to search for it please

Some of my thoughts and opinions heading into 2021 if anybody is interested.

Jack Higgins will be a much better player than people realise. He’s taken a little while to settle in but he does some really special things forward of centre. Such a funny kid that has really added a fun dynamic to the group.

Brad Crouch is one of the most important recruits we’ve had in some time. He’s such a ball pig which is exactly what we needed to help Steele. His addition allows us to dramatically change our midfield rotations which means we bat so much deeper.

Tom Highmore super impressive. He looks ready to go, and if I was selecting a round 1 team now he would probably be in it. Crazy brave, good user and is very slippery. A very unique player at his size.

We’ve had a forward 6 of King/Marshall/Membrey/Billings/Butler/Higgins at times during match sim and it looks unbelievable. 6 genuine threats and I honestly believe it would be one of the most dangerous front halves in the league.

Max King is just something else. We only seen small glimpses of it last year but this season he’s another player altogether. He feels bigger, fitter and stronger which is not good news for opposing defences. A lot of time will go into him and his jump at the footy which allows others to get free. The kid could honestly be anything. A freak.

Coff and Hunts have put together another strong summer and they both look like being stars. We nailed those 2 picks.

Hunter Clark was in yellow. Doesn't mean a thing

Looks llike he was in and out of boths sides, which is probably what happens when coaches want to see different combinations at work.

Thanks for the insights MG. Always well valued.

Out of interest if we were looking at Highmore coming in where do you think he would play as a KPD, 3rd tall or small?
In other words is he competing for Carlisle's spot, Wilkie/Coff's spot or Long/Clark's spot in the backline from last year.

Would have thoguht a backline of the below would be too tall?
Highmore, Howard, Paton
Wilkie, Carlisle, Coffield
I think he's more of a 3rd tall.

Last time I went down, he was matched up on Membrey and only look 1-2cm taller than him so you wouldnt want him replacing Carlisle.

Its interesting with regards to playing firsts vs. seconds.
Seems some teams do that and others spread it out.
On one hand it builds connection between them but on the other it does give some an easy run potentially.
eg. Hill would be pretty happy to line up against Connelly i would think.
Ideally you would mix it up throughout preseason so no one gets comfortable.

Our list is pretty strong this year so a lot of the '2nds' team are still AFL quality type players rather than just beating up on a 2nds full of new draftees.

I wouldn’t read too much into who’s in the yellow and black teams. It will depend on who’s on the track, managing workloads and then balancing out the teams off the back of that. Also, as an example, they might play max on Dougs for a half so he gets a proper AFL quality defender, then switch to clavarino so he gets some easier ball and build confidence etc

The forwards looked so slick at the 15 minutes or so of match sim I saw.

First four goals all involved Max. First brought it to ground, roved his own ball, handed it off to Butts or Higgins, cant remember. Second another contest spills to the pocket for a free. Third, strong contested pack mark 20 in front, Fourth, looked up to see him handballing to a free Paddy in the goalsquare.
He gets near it, he marks or it spills to ground.
Was an obvious tactic to kick long to the contest. Richo would have been wrapt

Explains why we've kept Clav I guess.

I know Gresh is your boy but cloning him is next level!

Looks good but might leave us too tall down back.
Nar man. Looks bloody perfect to me.

Gresh for Sincs obviously, but if Sincs has continued on from last year he could well be worthy.

The Saints will give it one hell of a good shake this year.
Higgo, Hunts and Coff are on the upward curve still and we've got Crouch as well.
Good times are coming!!

I would be absolutely shocked if we started with a backline that tall.

It's not that tall.
Long 184
Pato 187
Coff, Wilkie 191
Highmore 192/3

It's mobility that counts, plus all but Pato are quality intercept markers.

With Gears unavailable the only change could be Jweb at 188cm for Highmore.

I'd love to see our defenders be able to bully their was around for a change...

5 out of the starting 6 would be 191cm or above with Long on the bench and Paton the only ones who are suited to play on smaller forwards

GWS typically field 3 smalls plus will have midfielders - their tallest who is the same height as Long - roaming through there all game, so matchup wise we would need to keep one of our tall, marking defenders on the bench for the entire game which seems unlikely with the reduced rotations.

Ideally you would field 1 less of those marking defenders and all someone else to the midfield rotation knowing the Clark, Jones, Ross, even JB and Sinclair could rotate off half back if needed.

You'd think they rotate blokes through both sides just to keep morale up and give a sense of competition for spots.
It would be pretty dispiriting doing the whole preseason in the possibles colours.

Clark will start at HB because Hanners will be fit to play

Richmond play Balta, Grimes, Astbury and Broad.

Geelong play Taylor, Henderson, Kolodjashnij, Stewart and roll Blicavs back there.

I don’t think it would be too tall because all the mid size intercept players are agile. It would be very similar to the two grand final teams. That would hopefully shore up what was a pretty big weakness for us last year.
