Geelong and GMHBA Stadium leads the push to bring crowds back to AFL matches
There’ll be no crowds at AFL matches in Victoria this weekend, but the door has been left ajar at one venue which could shape how the finals play out.

Geelong remains at the front of the queue to welcome back Victorian footy fans although no crowd will be allowed at this weekend’s Round 22 match between Geelong and St Kilda at GMHBA Stadium.

Metropolitan Melbourne’s lockdown was extended by seven days on Thursday as public health officials declared it was still too risky to allow country-based supporters to return to the Cats’ regional venue.

But premier Daniel Andrews confirmed that GMHBA Stadium could be governed by softer settings than the MCG and Marvel Stadium if public safety was ensured and there was no added risk to the spread of the virus.

The potential for Geelong’s ground to operate at a greater capacity than the MCG would appear to greatly strengthen the Cats’ hopes of hosting finals at their fortress.

They can lock in a home qualifying final by beating St Kilda and Melbourne at GMHBA Stadium in the final two rounds of the season, but mystery once again surrounds the AFL’s policy for determining finals venues.

Next week’s heavyweight clash against the Demons would take on far more significance if both clubs were fighting for a home qualifying final.

Former Cats president and respected football administrator Colin Carter said the potential for the state government to set similar crowd capacities at the MCG and GMHBA Stadium would have to carry weight.

“It probably shifts the dial a bit, whether it actually shifts it permanently I’ve got no idea,” Carter told the Herald Sun.

“If you’re looking at factors that might tilt the decision, that’s one.

“But those decisions are based on multiple considerations and I’m not sure what the other ones are.”

Carter said Michael Jordan’s Netflix documentary The Last Dance highlighted that home ground advantage was “not immaterial” in world sport.

He said the AFL’s finals policy would eventually evolve to reward the best teams although it was still burdened by historical factors stemming from when the competition expanded nationally.

“My position has always been that clubs should have the right to determine where their home games are being played, and finals are what you fight for to get a home ground advantage,” he said.

Some club officials and players believe the higher-ranked club will be given their choice of venue in the event crowds can’t attend.

Kardinia Park Stadium Trust would also welcome non-Geelong games, and Sydney could host its elimination final at the regional ground it has a 4-1 record at since 2016.

It was expected that stage five of GMHBA Stadium’s redevelopment would rule the venue out of action after the first week of September.

But it is understood those construction papers have not yet been signed and so a start date has not been locked in.

Andrews said Sport Minister Martin Pakula was leading his government’s talks with the AFL.

“The public health team work with the events sector to try and make sure that events happen in a safe way and that if we can have crowds safely we will,” Andrews said on Wednesday.

“In terms of there being different settings (for regional venues), well, again, if it’s safe to have different settings then we probably would.

“But it’s just a matter of doing whatever is safe.”

8:10pm - GEELONG COULD HOST A CROWD AT GMHBA FINAL

In a stark turnaround from finals gone by, Geelong could be the only Victorian club to host a final in front of a crowd at their home ground in 2021.

The Age reports the AFL and Daniel Andrews’ Victorian government are both hopeful the state will host at least one final with a crowd.

Regional Victoria is not part of the current metropolitian Melbourne lockdown which was extended by two weeks on Monday, meaning GMHBA Stadium could potentially have a crowd in the opening weeks of the finals series, which are set to begin on August 27.

The Cats will have hosting rights for at least one final this year. They will host a qualifying final if they beat Melbourne in Round 23, and would have semi-final hosting rights if they lost in the first week, or if they won and went into a preliminary final.

Finals at different venues are likely to be considered on a “case-by-case and game-by-game” basis, according to the report, rather than all being locked into one city or state. Perth is the favourite to host the Grand Final.

5pm - ‘STRICT GUIDELINES’ FOR POSSIBLE WA GRAND FINAL

WA premier Mark McGowan says his state is working on “very strict guidelines” for a Perth Grand Final including no partners or families, and he would “expect” players to be vaccinated.

Optus Stadium looms as the likely home of the AFL’s showpiece event, and potentially other finals matches involving non-WA clubs as well, after Victoria’s lockdown was extended for another fortnight on Monday.

The league scrapping the pre-finals bye means the lockdown is scheduled to run up until the second week of finals, making any prospect of a large crowd at an MCG Grand Final a few weeks later unlikely at best.

However McGowan, who has been the strictest of all state premiers on border restrictions and Covid regulations since the start of the pandemic, won’t be changing his tune in order for Perth to host the game for the first time.

“That hasn’t been achieved (an agreement to host the Grand Final) at this point in time but, obviously, we’re working with the AFL on very strict guidelines around all these issues, and I don’t think the AFL has made that decision yet,” he said on Monday.

McGowan said the state’s “intention” was that interstate players would not be allowed to bring their partners and families with them, under a “very strict and tight regime”, while flagging the need for confirmation about quarantine plans and hubs.

“They would be decisions that we’ll have to work on with the chief health officer, but I’d expect most footballers, in fact, all, are probably vaccinated, I certainly would have thought that would have been a wise decision by the AFL,” McGowan said.

“But I understand our police and our health officials are working with the AFL at this point in time about what the protocols will be.”

It’s unclear how many AFL players are vaccinated. Under-40s in Victoria were only able to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine at state-run clinics from early August, while it was made available nationwide from late June at GPs - though not all were willing to give it out.

Victorian premier Daniel Andrews said on Monday it was too early to declare whether the Grand Final would be played at the MCG, as it is contracted to until 2059, or interstate.

Awesome, we have such a brilliant record in KP finals. :thumbsupv1:

Doesn't the AFL have the right to host finals at the home state venue with the highest possible crowd? So surely all VIC finals would have to be at KP if they can get 50% in for weeks 1+2 if the MCG is still without a crowd.

Sure. But they also clearly have the right to do whatever they please, whenever they want. So truly nothing would surprise at this point.

Apart from them doing what is best for footy in general and for fairness across the competition, that is.

I'm also still waiting. I think the club should offer a reduction on membership next year for members that have paid for memberships over the last couple of years. If we can afford to spend $150-200m on a new development then we can afford to give back to members. I recognize that part of my membership is to support the club that I love but I also pay for a attendance at games, a seat and access to facilities that I have been unable to use.

You realise that's being funded mainly by the taxpayer?

And we now have confirmation that we're very likely to be flying around the country to play all our finals this year...

The first two weeks of the finals won't be played in Victoria, with AFL boss Gillon McLachlan saying a decision on the location of the Toyota AFL Grand Final is expected to be made within days.

Hopes of an MCG decider are in tatters after Victoria posted another 55 new locally acquired COVID-19 cases on Friday.

The AFL's official line is that the MCG remains in the running to host the Grand Final.

But with McLachlan confirming finals won't be played in empty stadiums, it seems the MCG's hopes of hosting the Grand Final are doomed.

The first two rounds of the finals are set to be played in Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania.

Perth is the hot favourite to earn hosting rights for the Grand Final.

Article also talks about the likelihood of Perth getting both PF's as well, with a week off before the GF to allow a GF parade in the lead-up to the game.
