2024 AFL Awards Season... + Brownlow

We won 4 and a half more games this year, and only had 16 more votes than we did last year.

Cripps accumulated over half of Carlton’s votes, and N. Daicos over half of Collingwoods

Also, how did Hawthorn finish with 14 more votes than us?

In the 35 seasons in the AFL era Butters 29 votes would have won in 21 seasons.
He didn't even finish 2nd.
Butters had lots of comp from JHF and Rozee, but that Swans MF- Heeney, Gulden, Warner- surely the best trio in the comp.

The votes don't lie.

In a midfielders award our top 3 are our CHF, our star HBF who we moved to the midfield and Holmes who spent half the season mid and half at HBF.

Our other mids polled a combined 15 votes. A 3rd of that of the winner.

Bailey Smith better be good. We need it bad.

The point has sailed right over your head Dubs.
He's 9 and 16 votes short of those ahead of him, showing how farcical the vote polling for Cripps and Daicos was.

Taking a look at that i think you can see a bias to voting for strong midfields over winning games.

I can imagine that umpires are focused on the contest at all times, so i can understand a natural bias to inside mid types. They just give votes to what they see, and they dig see the players influencing the game outside their field of vision. So they'll never reward smart play off the ball etc.

They need a panel of former coaches to do it. You can find neutral people that will take it seriously, and they'll need to find someone to start taking it seriously before it loses all value

Congratulations Patrick. You're a champion, great leader, fully deserved.
Spoke beautifully, very inclusive and has heart. Fully worthy of my $5 too.
Don't know what you're all on about, he was the favourite wasn't he?

Nope. Players can dominate and their team can lose. Thats fair voting right?
We rarely had a stand out player.
Yeah you're right, it is a sum of individual awards. I guess I'm mostly frustrated that the individual awards seem unrelated to individual performances.

Nick Daicos polling a vote in a game he was subbed off in with 15 possessions. Bontempelli having a 32 disposal 2 goal game and not registering.

I just feel embarrassed for thinking the Brownlow was meaningful

Not at all- just admiring the MF depth some teams have. That's our legit weakness. Not only do we not have a star mid, we don't have elite talent. Holmes may be getting closer each year.
If Carlton's mids were fit, Cerra and Walsh would get votes as well.

It is meaningful, if you accept it's at the umpires discretion, and don't count possessions as the defining value sometimes.
Funny how the end result follows very closely on what good judges predicted.

Btw, Cripps played EVERY game, and very consistently. He had the ability, fitness and resilience to take on the opposition weekly, and be his team's best player almost every week. Not impossible, but very admirable.
So what if he does not get that recognition by coaches and peers.
If it had been Danger or GAJ at their very best, we'd be celebrating.

Ablett went at 31 and 2 goals a game during the 2010 H&A... and he didn't even win the medal that year.
That season is superior to Cripps 2024 without a doubt but it's 19 less votes.

True that.
I thought Neale and Bont may have been closer, but Bont seems to play great moments, but maybe not 4 quarters. Who knows. And it matters not. Cripps is a worthy winner this year again.

Nor 07, 08, when he was clearly the MVP, best in the comp etc...

He’s a very good footballer. I have a lot of time for him. But that voting is so dominant, it would suggest you just have to stop Cripps and you beat the blues. So that’s good to know!
