Essendon could match any offer we make, but whether they do comes down to trying to save face IMO. If they are realistic they'd know they aren't going to challenge whilst Merrett is in his prime, so they'd be better off using the money they'd throw at him to sign up their best youth (such as it is) long term and chase younger more realistic trade targets (who'd be around when they could challenge).

Of course many of their fans have bought into the cult of the Dodo, where hurting yourself (Essendon) is fine, as long as someone also doesn't get what they want. Coming up on where someone born the last time they won a final could legally drink, but hey! pissing off our players wanting out and continued non-success, in part by failing trade week over and over, sure is fun! :drunk:
Also might be easier to let him go if they end up getting Dunkley this time around.

You reckon other clubs would be happy with that? Ya kidding yourself.

2 million dollars a season though 🤣🤣🤣

You really think they’ll offer him $1.2m a year?
No, not for 4 or 5 years, it would have to be less. But that is just a suggestion of one way of doing it via an initial 2 year big offer, with the next contract being much less. Both parties take a risk though. It is just to illustrate that there are definitely ways to structure a deal to make it hard for a club to match it. If Port are genuinely going for Merrett, then I am pretty sure that Chris Davies & his manager will try to make it as hard as possible for Dodo to match.

I reckon 900k, the deal could get complicated though if Essendon have a good year.

Which Essendon would easily match.

It won’t be about money for Zach, it’ll be about chasing success if he chooses to leave, he can get as good if not more money to stay, as a restricted free agent I just can’t see him getting out of Essendon without a trade being done heavily in Essendon’s favour.

Or maybe Zach and his manager aren’t proper campaigners and will wish to see a fair outcome for all without the skullduggery?

At 26 I couldn’t possibly see him agreeing to a 2 year deal anyway.

There is lots of irony in the fact that I’ve learnt most of what I know about irony from Alanis Morrisette’s song “Ironic” (via Ed Byrne) given Alanis herself knows nothing about irony.

But there may be some irony also in the fact that we could land Merritt because we have more salary cap room than Essendon. Ironic or just bizarre?

Or untrue 🤷‍♂️

How can you associate the word "fair" and "Essendon" in the same sentence! You are now just being hypocrite. Fair ... fair? Why didnt the Dunkley deal go through last year? The Daniher deal the year before? Dodo is a tosser mate! If you want "fair," go look at the deals we made for want-away players like Impey, and the deal Sydney did for Aliir Aliir. That is what fair is. For you lot, fair is everything weighted your way cheaply.

Essendon have the reputation of being a bunch of tossers, and its supporters have been sucked into the paradigm!

Flick over to AA to hear who will be on tonight, and hear Rowe continue his disbelief that Port could get Merrett, then plays a Wines grab saying he is prepared to take a pay cut to get Merrett. Rowe tries to laugh it off that players would be prepared to get a player to club, he wouldn't, but would if it kept a premiership group together. Appears to be in some fear that if Port get him, it shows how shit the crows are at attracting and retaining players.

So you reckon they should have given up 2 top 10 draft picks for Dunkley do you?

The Daniher trade was never going to happen, both clubs knew that very early on, don’t believe everything you here in regards to what Sydney supposedly offered.

Impey and Alir, do you really want to compare them with the likes of Dunkley, Daniher and Merrett? Give me a spell mate.

A bunch of tosser? Really? Is that all you can come up with? Are you 12?

I thought I could come on here and have a proper discussion on this potential move but it appears a lot of you aren’t capable of hearing a different side to your fantasies.

Have fun forking out 2million dollars a season 🥴🥴🥴

Proper discussion? Mate you are the one coming on here behaving like a tool.

Usually we only have to put up with this sort of rubbish after the grand final and up til the start of the pre-season.

I guess the season has come early this year.

We have seen it all before and over the last few years our recruiting department usually get the job done and posters like you end up with egg on your face and not responding to all the bumps and tags.

Yes mate I am the one producing rubbish in this thread, despite the $4m over two years offers and the 1 year contracts etc. 🥴

Did we come out and say we wanted him? I think it's just media talk at this stage.
Essendon supporters coming here then running back to there board calling this a cesspool lol

You said you were leaving? This was 8 post ago 🤷

Appears to be in some fear that if Port get him, it shows how sh*t the crows are at attracting and retaining players.

I think the fear is not so much about Port being a "destination club" whilst every decent Crow seems to leave, but rather an indictment on the culture at West Lakes.

For years we have heard idiots like cRowe and Jarman say that the only reason the Crows lose players is because it is hard to keep interstate players to play in Adelaide. It's a nice little narrative they run to keep the Berryls and Sheryls of the world from having a heart attack.

So whenever there is news about Port bringing in someone from interstate, they naturally wet the bed, because their little faux world that they like to live in is once again crumbling down, and they have to face the realisation that the culture at West Lakes is the #1 problem at that club.

As for Merrett, I can't see Essendon matching any deal if they were going to get band 1 compo assuming said compo would be a top 5 (or thereabouts) pick.
